[promoted by haystack-I started a piece on this, saw Paul's, his was better, his is here, mine's gone...well done Paul..and well done Republicans that held out 'til the right thing got done for the men and women who matter most...]

The House of Representatives passed a clean funding bill today with no additions, earmarks or time tables. The Senate (and the conference comittee) is now the only hurdle left before the President can sign the bill. This gives our troops the necessities they need to combat our enemies.

Minority Whip Roy Blunt commented that the process took "too long." He was right.

Funding our men and women while in combat is something that should have never been second guessed or debated unless there is some extreme circumstance in which they are engaged in something unlawful. At that point the only Constitutional option Congress has is to pull the plug entirely.

The damage done by what I could categorize as horsing around is untold. There is no telling how much the Democratic position has strengthened Tehran's resolve or emboldened our enemies.

Yes, I wonder aloud how many people from all nations and walks of life have died because of Congress's inaction and spelling out to the world that the United States' resolve is no more.

Without reading the bill I would like to make one comment and echo President Bush's belief in benchmarks for the Iraqis. For us to continue funding their reconstruction effort while they take the summer off is just unimaginable. Mind you our Congressman were about to do the same thing.

In any case, I am relieved.

We need to make certain there are no points in the Dems column.

there WERE earmarks...just ones worth choking down in the name of funding the troops...and they DID make us eat a minimum wage hike...this will play out soon enough, but for today...as Joliphant says...troops 1, dems 0

I had different information.

But, come September look for the new bill with bench marks and a pullout date which will pass overwhelmingly with support from wobbly Republicans who are up for re-election in the House and more importantly the Senate.

There is nothing "clean" about this bill. It spends $20B on domestic pork that has nothing to do with our troops.

The information I had recieved was that it was clean.

I guess that was the compromise, eh? Pork for dem causes to make sure troops get bullets.

Fair enough trade, although funding our troops should never have to be bargained for.

Obama, Clinton, and Dodd.

While figuring they can put one over on the independents later.

Fantastic, so the Administration gets to continue unfettered down a course that is in the process of discrediting the GOP and conservatism for a generation.

I'm not sure how many more victories like that one the GOP can survive.

Maybe you are, but I am far more concerned about obtaining victory and peace for our country rather than next year's election.

If you want a funny feeling, just repeat what you said to one of our men or women who are serving in Iraq and whose life depends on what Congress should have decided long ago.

Though it looked like foolhardiness will continue to prevail in Congress, it was NOT to be, as the Iraq war funding bill is approved without it being "pork-laden" and revealing to our enemies a timetable for us quitting in Iraq. Now that's BETTER.

With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see right.

Glad to see funding was not linked to a stupid, irresponsible, immoral deadline for withdrawal (i.e., the Dems' preference), but we still don't have the ideal policy, because there's no real pressure to push the Shiite leaders toward political reconciliation with Sunnis. Here's what I believe to be the ideal and why: http://www.redstate.com/blogs/brooksrob/2007/apr/29/iraq_strategy_a_sens...

I'll be away all weekend and unable to respond to commments there until next week, but I'd welcome any comments.
