By PopulistConservative
I am rather disturbed when I hear conservatives say they are not going to vote for John McCain for some economic reasons when I figure they support the war in Iraq. Lately it seems there has been an onslaught of outrage over McCain's position on Global Warming. A diary dropping support for McCain has rocketed to the top of the recommended list. This is disturbing if they support the Iraq war.

Posted at 10:56pm on Feb. 18, 2008 Bridging the Divide between McCain-hater/dislikers and McCain Supporters.
By PopulistConservative
As alot of you may know, I have been a McCain supporter through a great deal of the primary season. As such I thought I would address the ever shrinking number of people who are so opposed to McCain that they are determined to destroy his chance at the white house by staying home or even voting for Hillary or Obama, and I also want to address those who are thinking of doing this. I also would like to address the other side of this divide. Since I’m on the pro-party unity side now, and with Rudy I was close to being on the “lets save the party” side I understand a little about both groups.

Posted at 7:37pm on Jul. 2, 2007 Why I am not a Libertarian; and Why I am a Social Conservative
By PopulistConservative
Yesterday I engaged in a debate on Race42008 (Where I blog as John) that covered several topics but mainly the topic of gay marriage. I think the debate in some ways came down to a debate between the philosophies of libertarianism versus the philosophy of social conservatism. In the thread, it was claimed that social conservatism took the wrong side of history every time and that social conservatives were responsible for supporting slavery, segregation and so forth. This got my blood boiling, but it all got me to think about what the philosophy of social conservatism is, and what the philosophy of libertarianism is – so here are my thoughts on the issue. Read on Below the fold.

Posted at 2:53am on Jun. 11, 2007 A Response to“Of the Geneva Conventions, “Torture Bans,” and Murdered Soldiers”
By PopulistConservative
I had so much to write in response to “Of the Geneva Conventions, “Torture Bans,” and Murdered Soldiers” that I figured it would not fit well in the comments so here it is:
I will first discuss where I agree with you. First, I agree with your general point that there isn’t a direct correlation between us torturing the enemy and the enemy torturing us, and I find the blame America first crowd to be disgusting. Somehow, they believe that Americans can get entangled in other countries just out of our own interest, but other countries can only engage in war in self defense against us. They seem to truly believe that America is the only country capable of aggression. I believe that America is the strongest refuge of freedom and peace. Liberals claim to want freedom and peace (well peace anyway), yet they trash what I see as the most peaceful and free nation on earth. Secondly, I agree that some claims of torture are exaggerated. Obviously a definition of torture that includes “cheap soap”, “balls that won’t bounce”, “and noise” is too broad.

Posted at 3:55am on May 18, 2007 Challenge for Immigration Restrictionists: Are Most Americans in Favor of Amnesty?
By PopulistConservative
It seems like whenever there is an immigration debate I hear something like "80% of people just want enforcement", and the general impression is made that the vast majority of people are on the side of the people who are opposed to any path to legalization and just for enforcement. One gets the impression that there is this super majority that is being suppressed by the few in Congress.
I have looked at the polling and I cannot recall seeing one poll that shows a majority of people against a path to legalization. It seems all the polls show between around 60-80% of people being in favor of a path to legalization for illegal immigrants. The HTML messes up how I show the polls, in the following poll just keep in mind that the first numbers are those who support, second numbers those who oppose and last numbers those who don't know. The polling comes from: http://pollingreport.com/immigration.htm. First check out this poll:

Posted at 12:28pm on May 16, 2007 2008 Debate: How Did They Do?
By PopulistConservative
Finally finishing watching the debate (a slow process of downloading video from fox news, with dial-up internet) here is what I think.
I found that the candidates I like best did the best. Maybe I was unable to get all my bias out of the way. These are my rankings based on debating skill not so much whether I like what the candidates say.
1. I would say that Huckabee won; for one thing Huckabee had everything to gain from the debate and nothing to lose, so I think the debate helped him more than anyone else. Huckabee sounded likable, and came out strong on the culture of life, bonus was the good joke about Edwards.

Posted at 8:12pm on Mar. 13, 2007 NARAL and the 2008 candidates
By PopulistConservative
I took a look at what rating NARAL has given our Candidates. I was able to see ratings for 2005, 2004, 2003, 2001, and 2000. Interestingly McCain, Brownback, hunter and Tancredo all have the exact same ratings. Zero for every year. Ron Paul’s numbers for these years were: 75%, 65%, 35%, and 0% respectively. If you are a big fan of NARAL and these numbers leave you wondering who to support do not worry because there is always the man who said this: "In any case, I just wanted you to know that many of my fellow Republicans stand with you on this issue. So I thank you, I thank NARAL for taking the lead in establishing freedom of choice for all of us, and as the Mayor of New York City, I thank you for being here in New York City."

Posted at 1:03am on Mar. 2, 2007 Education - A Political Priority
By PopulistConservative
With the current War on Terrorism and in Iraq, domestic issues such as education have been pushed to the side. However, as I will try to point out I think that education is a very important field to advance the conservative agenda.
It is no secret that academia is liberal. I don't know if conservatives know what a loss this is. How do you expect many kids to turn out conservative if the world view that they are taught 24 - 7 is liberal.

Posted at 7:13pm on Feb. 20, 2007 The Oversimplification of the Constitution
By PopulistConservative
It seems to me that conservatives often oversimplify the Constitution. I have heard variations on the idea that, since the constitution is written in English it should be easy to interpret. Then there is the idea that, if something is not in the constitution that it is not a constitutional issue. For example, conservatives decry how ridiculous it is for the Court to rule on abortion when it is not in the constitution.
