just saw the video clip ... FT has perfect right to change his mind "thought that then ... think this now". changing one's mind shows an open mind. however, what he says in this clip ... while technically correct is misleading.

BREAKING NEWS: Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own."

I obtained a copy of the interview from Eric Dondero, founder of the Republican Liberty Caucus. He has more thoughts on the matter here.

Though news accounts have circulated around the internet describing Thompson as pro-choice in 1994, this is the first example I've seen of a direct quote in which Thompson espoused a clearly pro-choice position. And there's likely more where that came from.

Thompson now says he is pro-life and calls Roe "bad law." It must also be pointed out that during his 8-year career in the Senate, his voting record was solidly pro-life. But should he decide to jump into the race, they'll no doubt be more scrutiny of his shifting position on abortion

I also tuned in to watch Fred Thompson being interviewed by Sean Hannity. The news portion of the interview was that Thompson announced his new website, I'mWithFred.

After watching two hours of Republicans answer tough questions, I thought Thompson's performance was a dud. If I didn't know going in that he was considered a top tier presidential candidate, I would have thought of him as just another talking head. He was fine at laying out a lot of the problems and challenges we face that he said people aren't really talking about correctly or don't comprehend (Iran, the War on Terror, globalization, entitlements, etc.) but he didn't offer any solutions to those problems or make any sort of case for why he thinks he might be the person best suited to solve them. Say what you want about Romney, McCain, and Giuliani, but they point to specific accomplishments of theirs to make the argument that they are the most qualified to lead the nation at this time. When Rudy Giuliani complains about government not working, he can credibly say, as he did in tonight's debate, "I turned around New York City, I can turn around Washington." For all of the hoopla surrounding Thompson, neither he nor any of his fans have made the case for what he has tangibly done that recommends him for the highest office in the land. Obviously, it's early, and he hasn't even announced he's running yet. But now that it seems apparent that he intends to run, it's showtime--and he has to offer more than just more folksy outsider schtick.

And by the way, since you're here as a Rudy Giuliani supporter only to trash Fred Thompson (that's all you've done in five days since getting here), why do you think you are qualified to tell us about someone's pro-life positions?

Also, do you think Giuliani would be proud of you trying to slime Mr. Thompson's wife as you have done repeatedly?

The next time you post this exact same story will be your last. Please have the decency to at least provide us with *new* opposition research.

What has Fred Thompson done that makes him the natural "Ronald Reagan" candidate of 2008. Aside from being a well known B-Actor.

Mitt has one term which he used his last year in office to build up brownie points with the conservative base. The other three were lukewarm at best.

McCain has commited political suicide and ids no longer even relevent to this race, he just takes up space and time during the GOP debates.

The Second tier Candidates seem to just be chopping up what ever is left ogf the GOP base.

Honestly, the more people that annouce they are running the more Rudy looks like he will win via the social conservatives being distracted.

Despite liking Rudy, I think he is almost purposely being set up to be the nominee.

Look at the weakest and largest field in memory, The Frontrunners are all liberals in some way. Even if Fred is the social conservative. Then, he had better have something good to offer in real solution otherwise he will become a pick for social conservatives alone. Leaving the rest of the base to Rudy.

Either way, I do not like how things are going. Although, Rudy appears to be getting serious about stopping illegal immigration. Even if he did faulter on that issue as mayor, he never ran on a pro-illegal policy and as a mayor of New York City, how in hell is he supposed to secure the US-Mexican Border?

Will a Conservative please stand up?

Or I am voting for Rudy if he is the nominee to defeat the Democrats. I rather have a conservative-libertarian Republican over a socialist Democrat anyday.

Rudy is not great but, at least he cannot make things worse, like the Dems. Besides he is known for getting the things he promises done. So, when he promises to stop illegal immigration and nominate strict constructionists, I tend to believe him. Besides he got NEW YORK Democrats to agree on cutting or eliminating taxes, that alone is impressive.
