Last Living WWI Veteran and a different kind of Memorial Day

I've recently relocated to my friend's house for the sumer in Olathe, KS.

Kansas City is a new place for me, and so are the people. My friend's father, Dean of faculty at Nazarene Theological Seminary, has been introducing me to his colleagues from the Seminary. There are all anti-GOP and staunch "progressives."

Being the son of a Nazarene pastor myself, it was interesting to hear the difference in their political views and mine. And then a large group of them (and myself) attended the Kansas City Memorial Day Celebration last night. It was outside Union Station with a live performance by the Kansas City Symphony.

In the middle of the performance, the narrator began telling the story of Frank Buckles. The last living veteran from WWI at 107 years old. I was moved. How amazing is that?

And I begin to listen around me and one of the daughters with us said, "Wow, why do American's feel that have to be so patriotic and honor soldiers who have only murdered?" To which her mom said, "Because in this part of the country, unfortunately, that is what people appreciate."

Oh, liberals. Why? It was one of the saddest things I had heard come out of someone's mouth in a long time.

God Bless Our Military.

it is an infuriating story. I am fairly non-confrontational (particularly in person), but I don't think I could have kept my mouth shut on that one.

We don't murder, we ensure, with violence if necessary, the ability for her to think and indoctrinate her child in the idea that we murder. Thank God she feels comfortable saying that. If not, then I wouldn't be doing my job.

OK, it's true, the idea behind the military is to break things and kill people. WE DON"T DO IT JUST FOR THE FUN. We're trying to keep THEM from breaking our things and killing our people.

Cowardice asks the question, is it expedient? And vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thanks.

Sad I guess they would prefer being Nazis or subjected to whomever got arround to attacking the US because we refuse to 'murder'.

Just when I think that I couldn't possibly find anything more inane I'm proven wrong. Have they not read any history????

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
- George Santayana

Our military tries not to murder. Why do you think we use expensive smart bombs and go out ofour way, often exposing ourown men to more risk to avoid killing civillians??
The fact is that the agressors make the rules. In battle people die- we play by the terrible rules that those who would attack American soil force us to play by. If we stop playing by the rules-playing to win, then these agressors, tyrants, and terrorists won't just be dictating the horrible realities of armed conflict but also will dictate how we live our daily lives....and that would be without freedom of speech, thought, or religion and in abject fear of them. Our brave "Murderers" spare us that fate by doing dirty work that must be done.
Thank you men and women in uniform.
