Posted at 2:02pm on Feb. 13, 2008 Don't ever quit, Huckabee!
By samcoastie
Every republican primary exit poll shows that very conservative republicans don't choose McCain. I can't think of anything that would make him more electable for moderates and liberals. As long as those results come in each week, MSM attempts to paint him as just another Bush conservative won't hold water and eventually no one will listen to that line of attack.
So keep it up, Huck.

Posted at 10:28pm on Feb. 10, 2008 What color is a zebra?
By samcoastie
Growing up I always thought a zebra was white with black stripes. I was surprised in college to find that some thought a zebra was black with white stripes. What was more astounding was there was a heated discussion over the issue. Yes, there were liberals involved and yes, racism was the charge.
Some say that McCain is a conservative with liberal stripes. Others are just as sure he is a liberal with conservative stripes. Some say Romney is a liberal that has rolled in conservative soot, like the Pepe le Peu, of looney tune fame. Hopefully, we can all let go of the discussions of who is conservative and who is not so much and get down to looking at the people behind the labels.

Posted at 4:17pm on Feb. 8, 2008 I thought I was bummed about Romney's departure.
By samcoastie
My wife and I purchased 25 Romney signs and donated last week. Our signs arrived Tuesday and yesterday we were planning to put them out, just in time for the Louisiana Primary. When My wife told me Romney had dropped out of the race, I thought I was bummed. Then we told our children about the 'change in plans'. My kid's reaction just about did me in.

Posted at 4:46pm on Jan. 31, 2008 McCain may be Romney's best chance in the general.
By samcoastie
A Romney nomination is unlikely at this point. The only way it can happen is if conservatives wake up from a long slumber and roar to life. If that happens, we will roar all the way to the white house. As Newt points out, there are a lot more conservative ideas people agree on than liberal...especially since Romney takes Healthcare out of play for the Dems. He could actually use that against them! That would be fun.

Posted at 4:25pm on Jan. 31, 2008 McCain poll.
By samcoastie
Three questions.
Will you vote for John McCain?
Will you support John McCain by putting a magnet on your car or a sign in your yard?
Will you give money to McCain for President?
Lets make this short and keep responses to three words. For me it is
Doubtful
No
No

Posted at 11:33am on Jan. 31, 2008 I have changed my mind on McCain. UPDATED.
By samcoastie
I had once thought that if McCain won the nomination, I would have to vote for him. I felt I had to because the mission in Iraq was just too important. I have now decided that I have just as much faith in Hillary as I do McCain. I believe that she is lying to get the Democratic nomination. Initially, she hedged her bets when speaking about Iraq, leaving herself open to keeping troops there. It was only when Obama and Edwards forced her to that she came up with stronger withdrawal statements. She couldn't let herself get out-lefted! Even now she talks about beginning withdrawing troops within 90 days of taking office. That's a pretty safe bet, since withdrawals are already beginning.

Posted at 3:02pm on Jan. 30, 2008 Let's have cow for dinner.
By samcoastie
Republicans decided on prime rib, democrats wanted cow pies. A great fight ensued until McCain came in and said "Let's keep it civil. There's an easy solution. Put the cow pies on the prime rib and eat them together!" The democrats agreed and enjoyed what McCain offered them. The republicans mostly went hungry.
So the republicans chose hamburgers. Again the democrats chose cow pies. Again, McCain stepped in and again the republicans went mostly hungry.
Soon McCain will be making the menu.

the Louisiana GOP Caucus held last night? I've only been in Louisiana for 6 months and I have been confused by the various dates for votes here. There was the caucus last night, then a primary here on Feb 9 that is non-binding, unless someone wins over 50% of the vote, in which case they get 20 of the 47 delegates assigned to Louisiana. Then on Feb 16, the delegates elected in last night's caucus gather for the state convention and select the delegates for the national GOP convention, except the three Louisiana GOP party leaders who are automatically delegates in September. All the delegates selected are uncommitted, except 20 if someone tops 50% on the Feb 9th primary. I used to wonder about Louisiana's reputation for corrupt politics. Now I understand that the political system here is muddier than the river that splits the state.

By samcoastie
For me, Romney is the $1,000,000 briefcase that's still in play. But seeing another big number come off the board feels like a shot to the gut. I'd go to Rudy if Mitt fails, but I doubt he will still be there. For me, McCain feels like the low-ball offer from the bank....and part of me knows I may end up taking it at some point.

Posted at 2:02pm on Jan. 18, 2008 McCains flip-flop
By samcoastie
McCain was against the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. In the years that followed he thought it was more important to work with the Dems on campaign finance reform, immigration reform, knee-jerking to the global warming hype and keeping the Senate from getting bogged down with unimportant details like judicial nominees.
Now he says he wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, and cut corporate taxes even more. Where was this plan when the Republicans had the votes to actually do something about it? What has caused him to back off on being against tax cuts for the rich? When was his change of heart?

Posted at 3:12pm on Jan. 16, 2008 Why I believe Mitt's SoCon conversion and not Huckabee's FisCon conversion.
By samcoastie
When Mitt is challenged about his pro-choice stance he says, "I was wrong," and tells us what he has done about it.
When Huckabee is challenged about raising taxes and spending he gives a variety of denials, finger pointing and justifications, or simply ignores the challenge with a wisecrack about 'flak' or getting kicked in the behind.
I've got 4 children and I know which answer I'd rather hear from them if I want to believe they aren't going to repeat the same offense over and over again.

Posted at 3:17pm on Dec. 19, 2007 Complete this sentence: Romney as President scares me bacause I am afraid he will.....
By samcoastie
I support Romney. I can come up with things I am afraid that the other major candidates will do, but I have no real fears of what Romney will do.
McCain: Our immigration policy will be too soft.
Rudy: Will not hold the line on social issues. Who will he appoint to fill open judge seats and the thousands of executive branch positions?
Huckabee: Higher taxes, more govt, passive foreign policy.
