By scorpio

reck·on·ing –noun 1. count; computation; calculation.
2. the settlement of accounts, as between two companies.
3. a statement of an amount due; bill.
4. an accounting, as for things received or done.
5. an appraisal or judgment.

When we lost control of Congress last year, the results threw a monkey wrench into the race to succeed GWB. Names like Allen, Frist and Santorum were thrown out. For a small time, I wavered between Romney and Rudy. Before early March, I came very close to supporting Romney, despite my worries about his "conversions".

By scorpio

First: I am a Fredhead. Proud of it. Get over it. This is written through the prism of being a Fredhead, so all you Romneybots, Huckanuts & McCainiacs get over it.

It well known and well spoken that Fred Thompson will not win New Hampshire. He won't even come close. I happen to agree, although I wouldn't be surprised if Thompson did a point or two better than he is in the polls because of his debate performance, probably around 7-9%.

By scorpio

This may be one of the many reasons we always lag the Dems so much in fundraising.

How 'bout it GOP? Why not? Or better yet, since many of you are understandably reluctant to funnel money to the national and state parties (I live with the PAGOP, I should know), why don't we have a Club For Growth, or Rightroots or best of all a Fred08 credit Card, with a percentage of your purchases going to said organizations.

By scorpio

Back in June I chastised Wubbies World for promoting a website that claimed to be the Offical FDT store. Well, I was wrong. ELBUSA, the company behind that site, has offically teamed up with the official campaign to provide official Fred merchandise. I think they have a pretty good selection.

Hold on to all that money you were going to go to Vegas with, spend on your children, donate to charity, feed the homeless, or cure the lame or other selfish goals such as that.

Posted at 10:04am on Jun. 6, 2007 Presenting the OFFICIAL Fred Thompson Campaign Site

By scorpio

Here it is, folks:

http://www.imwithfred.com/

Let's swarm the site and show our support for Fred!

Sign up and by all means, if you can, contribute.

Run, Fred, Rum!

BTW, As a response to Tommy Thompson the other night: Fred Thompson the actor consistantly places much higher than you do on any credible polls. And you also unwittingly stated Fred's greatest advantage: he is not a "candidate" and he has not been running for the office for two decades, like others.

Posted at 1:20am on May 19, 2007 The Coming Collapse of The "Big Three"

By scorpio

II have been watching the ensuing debates (no, around here more like grievances, and rightfully so). I think many here can guess what effect this might have on the GOP nomination fight but I will run through each of the major candidates to give my analysis of what will happen. Suffice to say, I think the next week will result in a far more significant and informative week for GOP primary voters than any of the canned debates or fundraising numbers.

Posted at 10:42pm on Apr. 6, 2007 Take the Fifth, Hold the Tenth- UPDATED

By scorpio

(h/t for info from some RS people for info about specific districts, the only one I can think of right now is Wubbies World, but h/t anyway) (h/t to Ea-Bo Clipper for more info on MA-05)

As most of you know, over the next sixth months there will be at least two special elections for Congress, one for the Tenth District in Georgia and the other for the Fifth District in Massachusetts. These districts are generally polar opposites of one another, electing members of the respective parties by over 60%. These two special elections open up a great opportunity, an opportunity to recover the shattered GOP brand and to reenergize the party with a solid grassroots support. A win in both these districts would not technically help the GOP much, we would have a minority of 203, instead of 202. But all the same, money and time should be spent in order to ensure that both districts are GOP by the end of his year.

Posted at 12:38pm on Apr. 1, 2007 Thompson announces bid for presidency, but WRONG THOMPSON

By scorpio

via AP

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070401/ap_on_el_pr/thompson2008

Tommy Thompson was a tremendous governor of Wisconsin, serving 14 years and cutting back on government. However, while this is commendable, he does not have the support to win the nomination.

His entrance into the race is sure to erode Romney's support, that of which he has, even more. Whatever support Thompson gets will certainly come from former Bush insiders who are looking for the "charismatic governor" candidate. He is clearly angling for the "compassionate" conservative, as he was for the enormous Medicare Part D program.

Posted at 6:52pm on Mar. 25, 2007 Time for a Primary: The Arrogance of Chuck Hagel

By scorpio

Behold the arrogance.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070325/ap_on_go_co/us_iraq

Unless this is a really really bad misquote, I don't see how Hagel can continue to call himself a Republican, much less an American. He advocates impeachment of the president, in wartime, when members of the opposing party do not even dare say it themselves? This, boys and girls, is pure arrogance.

I would advocate banishment, but considering the state of Congress today, that would be ironic. I don't care whether Hagel votes with the party 99% on the other issues, if he's talking trash like this, it's go time.

An idea: for every one of those doctors who we give citzenship, we can give a first-class ticket to the bevy of American celebrities and idiots who love Castro. I'll pay for the "Media Whore" to go myself.

Oh the irony.

Posted at 12:31am on Jan. 25, 2007 2008 SEN- January 2007 Update

By scorpio

With John Ensign and Chuck Schumer(hereafter the Recruiters) already gearing up their Senate campaigns, I thought it proper to give an update on where the 2008 Senate races stand as of today. I’ll reorder my list based on the “tiered” system instead of the alphabetical list I used last time. If you didn’t realize it, the 2008 races are as heated right now as they will be in 22 months, with potential candidates garnering an idea of their potential support and the Recruiters picking their respective A teams. A good amount of news on many races has happened since November 2006, and I think I can say while that Ensign has not yet proved much about himself, he is most defiantly NOT ole’ Libby. The usual disclaimer on all info provided, some of these races could drop off the list completely and others could appear without warning, depending on local and national events until Nov. 4 2008( I think George Allen realized this one the hard way) . To be partisan hack, I think if the Dems continue their meltdown we have seen over the past week, I would say we would have an equal to good chance of recapturing the Senate in 2008, which is impressive considering the massive disadvantage we have in at seats at play.

Posted at 2:25am on Jan. 1, 2007 New Year, New Races: 2007 GOV Rundowns

By scorpio

Happy New Year!

With that public service anouncement done, lets get back to work.

I was going to write a post-holiday “get-off-your-butt” 2008 Senate race update, but the recent dearth of news concerning retirements and announcements plus the developing situation in South Dakota have postponed that until February 2007. Instead, since Erick(I think?) has castigated us for focusing on 2008 at the expense of 2007, I thought it would be smart to go through the races happening ten months from now, instead of those 22 months away. All three of these elections will likely have repercussions into 2008. Many of us ignored the 2005 race results, which while they were not the siren the MSM had them being, they did in many ways set the tone for what happened last year. For example, in 2005 the PA GOP was slaughtered in local elections statewide. This should have told us something about the “PA Four”’s vulnerability. I am still mad about PA’s 2006 results, with one Senate seat and four House seats gone, at least one of them for the foreseeable future. In this spirit I will provide a rundown of the three Gov races scheduled for this year. These are the most obvious races, but by far no means the only, so make sure you know your own local races by heart. Here goes:

Posted at 12:43am on Nov. 11, 2006 Complete Senate 2008 Rundown (11/11/06 edition)(UPDATED)

By scorpio

(Please, in the interest of providing a complete as possible rundown of the Senate races in 2008, I ask you to provide me with corrections or additions so I can modify this list. I aim to make this an evolving project, but as I can’t perfectly study the politics of each state in question, some of you may be better situated to give me feedback here. I will update this with your suggestions, and give proper credit. Remember, this site is the resource we make it. Thanks, scorpio)

Posted at 2:53am on Nov. 5, 2006 72 Hour Senate Predictions

By scorpio

I thought I'd get the ball rolling on predictions here at Redstate with my own Senate predictions(House is way to long, and I don't normally trust any polling of individual CDs). I'll include recent polling and Tradespots averages for each. I'll list them by R and D held seats ordered by the most likely to be lost by either side. I'll admit I am optimistic, but then again we'll see. Here goes:

Republican Held Seats
