On this day in 1979 Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. The reminder is here:

We should all pine for the days when Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reagan led the free world. Think for a moment, and imagine these two giants were leaders of the free world on 9/11. Would we be at loggerheads over prosecuting a war against the barbarians who threaten us with destruction? I think not.

First Gulf War commenced on this day in 1991. Cannot believe that it passed me by until I saw this.

Unfortunately too much emphasis was placed upon the coalition and the implications of upsetting other countries and the UN, if we continued the fight and gave Saddam his due. Bad advice taken by Bush the Elder led us to rely on UN sanctions to keep Saddam at bay. Of course, we all know how that worked out.

Why is the Muslim terrorist unlike any other we have faced? They recognize no limits, nor reason, in waging this war. It is an unconfined worldwide jihad - although our military presence in SWAsia has concentrated it to a large extent. That said, why does the West - especially the average US citizen, not understand this is war without end, at least until we submit and are subsumed into Islam? The entire non Muslim world is their acknowledged prize. It won't happen tomorrow, nor perhaps even during our lifetime, but incrementally it will come, if we allow it.

By Seminole 6

For many of us who seek information to understand the current state of this society, and who are concerned with the long term survival of our way of life, all of the news is bad. In fact, I would say it is going to hell in the proverbial hand basket.

Conservatives, libertarians, centrists, non-nannystaters and everyone who strives to survive is being beaten down, submerged really, by the litany of bizarre policies created when inmates run the asylum. It appears we have lost the political war, the war on terror and apparently the hearts and minds of the voters; most of whom have no allegiance to anything, except PC and government largesse. Even though we vote, and plan to right the ship, we have lost this society. Pick a subject and disagree if you wish.

Posted at 11:33pm on Oct. 27, 2006 If we lose the Congress, what then?

By Seminole 6

I vacillate as to whether we will lose either or both of the houses of Congress, but fear we might. Was never that concerned with the Senate, as a loss there appeared unlikely. Until recently, I did not believe that we would fail in the House, now the pundits -- right leaners included -- are forecasting 16-20 seats lost. First hopeful/confident, then deflated. The leftward skew/drift of the polls wears me down.

Posted at 9:28am on Aug. 29, 2006 Something Wrong?

By Seminole 6

Is there something wrong with the Republican party and the conservative movement? The problem I see is - the Republican Party is not conservative, it is presently without conviction -there is nothing wrong with the conservative movement, but it is homeless

Has the Republican party completely abandoned the conservative and will conservatives heed the Republican siren song, when voting time comes in November 06, and more importantly, 08? Can we conservatives survive without a national party for focus? If not, can the libertarian / independent middle be a home for Conservatism. My answers are yes, yes and no, no. See if you agree.

Posted at 9:07am on Aug. 7, 2006 Hiroshima anniversary

By Seminole 6

Notice Academic Elephant had a comment about the anniversary this morning and thought I would toss in my 2 cents worth.

Local moonbats observed the anniversary yesterday with antiwar fervor. Local media echoed the lefty line of America/war = bad. Their observance, and the media coverage, mentioned the people killed in the bombing - tragic, but necessary - and never once told the truth about why and what it was all about. Unfortunately, most of the great unwashed are deficient in history, and probably think Hiroshima was routine US agression and murder, instead of an effort to save lives and end a war we did not start.

By Seminole 6

Must rain a bit on the veto parade, as I cannot let this event pass without commenting to inject a dose of reality.

I do understand the delight of some that the President is vetoing this stem cell bill. However, I am bothered that we are 6 years into his administration and this is (apparently) the President's first veto. Many will argue that this particular veto is misused or misplaced and that this big stick, wielded by most Presidents, has been allowed to atrophy:

Saw a new poll (AP-Ipsos, whatever that is) out today. Another Democratic campaign commercial by dead tree media. Title: Most Americans Plan to Vote for Democrats

Here it is -http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060714/ap_on_go_co/republicans_ap_poll_2

With that title you know what is coming. The "poll found that Americans by an almost 3-to-1 margin hold the GOP-controlled Congress in low regard and profess a desire to see Democrats wrest control after a dozen years of Republican rule."

Pure spin? We all know that the congress is lower than low in polling. 3 to 1 margin? What was the question?

Posted at 3:05pm on May 30, 2006 Defense of the Indefensible

By Seminole 6

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Sensenbrenner appeared to be one politico who was concerned with the American people, because of his uncompromising stand on the Senate's reckless, anti-American bill, on illegal aliens.  This morning when I saw that he is over the top on the matter of executing a search warrant on Rep Jefferson's office, I though - well, well, a 180° turn away from what is right.

At least one of the "witnesses" at the Committee Hearing has accused Justice and the FBI of intentional intimidation of Congress: "One witness at the hearing, former Rep. Bob Walker, R-Pa., said Congress should play hardball in seeking answers to its questions by subpoenaing administration documents authorizing the raid. The American people should be deeply concerned that a decision to conduct a raid on Congress was made consciously and evidently at high levels inside the Justice Department and the FBI," Walker told the panel. "If the Rayburn raid was a precedent for coming attractions and intimidating tactics, the way Congress responds initially must be improved." Link:  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060530/ap_on_go_co/raid_on_congress_4.

To what end this intimidation was applied was not specified but the charge of illegal, extraconstitutional activity by the administration, is clear.

Then I saw Wm. F. Buckley's thoughts on the subject, and while he did not chastise the FBI for executing the warrant as it did, neither did he exonerate. WFB seems to censure the administration  for prevarication in the wiretapping controversy and generally overreaching. But then he also ridicules the House for overextending the "privileged from arrest....." clause, into a blanket search immunity. Perhaps he is saying a pox on both? Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060530/ap_on_go_co/raid_on_congress_4

When this kerfluffle commenced, my thoughts were that the House is waving the biggest red herring they have ever invented. There is no possible reading that gives them any immunity from search and seizure under the constitution. After further reflection, should there be?

Looking back, history shows that it takes very little to swing the balance of power from representative to totalitarian government. I do not maintain that we will have a totalitarian state in the future, certainly not with GWB at the helm, but would an immunity such as the House advocates act as extra insurance against the possibility?  More importantly, would granting such an immunity create, rather than solve, problems?

Posted at 1:52pm on May 26, 2006 House GOP expected to yield on legislation.

By Seminole 6

So says the Washington Times

Link :http://www.washtimes.com/national/20060525-115533-3671r.htm

The Times already predicts that the House will cave to the threats now being hinted at by the White House. Sort of inevitable I suppose. Apparently the President - and the Senate I imagine - believe the House must eat the bad parts of this bill so that they can tell the voters "I did something about illegal immigration". I hope that is not the case, but I believe it is a distinct possibility.

I read that Hastert may not bring the bill up for consideration, can he sustain that? Given the numbers of Dems and soft Repubs in the house, do conservatives have the numbers to defeat approval of this bill? Do they even have the horsepower to chop the really bad stuff off in conference committee?

Since the President is going to lean on the few good people we have in the House, it is time to worry, I think. Incidentally, it is a real downer to hear Tony Snow doing the leaning.

What say you?

Posted at 1:37pm on May 22, 2006 A Potential Republican Presidential Candidate

By Seminole 6

Caught John Kasich talking about his new book on CSPAN yesterday evening. He fell off the radar screen for me when he retired from Congress, as I do not watch a lot of TV. Seeing him started me wondering again about potential presidential candidates - lord knows I have thought about that a lot lately. Recalling his time in the House, I always considered him to be a good candidate for president.

Posted at 10:18am on May 19, 2006 No Social Security left for US Citizens?

By Seminole 6

That is what it looks like to me. What can the political class be thinking? Are they so greedy for a few illegal alien votes that they are willing to flush the rest of us and ignore the groundswell of revulsion in this country at the way this is being handled?

Illegals granted Social Security

By Charles Hurt

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

May 19, 2006

The Senate voted yesterday to allow illegal aliens to collect Social Security benefits based on past illegal employment -- even if the job was obtained through forged or stolen documents.

"There was a felony they were committing, and now they can't be prosecuted. That sounds like amnesty to me," said Sen. John Ensign, the Nevada Republican who offered the amendment yesterday to strip out those provisions of the immigration reform bill. "It just boggles the mind how people could be against this amendment."

The Ensign amendment was defeated on a 50-49 vote.....

"It makes no sense to reward millions of illegal immigrants for criminal behavior while our Social Security system is already in crisis," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican. "Why in the world would we endorse this criminal activity with federal benefits? The Senate missed a big opportunity to improve this bill, and I doubt American seniors will be pleased with the result."

Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat, said it would be unfair to deny illegals the benefits.....

On Wednesday, senators narrowly approved an amendment to require a foreign worker to have a job lined up in the United States before applying for a green card. The purpose, supporters say, is to ensure that the job market isn't flooded with foreign workers. Also, it prevents foreign workers from coming to the United States only to wind up unemployed and dependent on public assistance.

But yesterday, the Senate essentially gutted that amendment by allowing foreign workers to apply for permanent residency without having a job lined up.

"What that means is that up to 200,000 unskilled workers a year would become eligible for a green card, regardless of economic conditions, regardless of whether that worker has been actually employed for four years, and most importantly, regardless of whether there are unemployed U.S. workers available to fill those jobs," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican.

Posted at 9:58am on May 16, 2006 What this conservative has to do.

By Seminole 6

My posting yesterday asked the rhetorical question "What is a conservative to do?". After some informed responses to my question, things were starting to look up. Since last night when I read a great piece in  NRO by Jim Geraghty.

Link: http://tks.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZmE1YjA5OGViMGYzZDRlMWE0MmU2Yjk2ZjFhN
zAzMDQ

I have decided I cannot sit out and must help the cause, even if I hold my nose occasionally.

Mr Geraghty made good sense with his premise that conservative holdouts in the coming election will sink the Conservative ship. And, it could well doom us to another indeterminate sentence in purgatory that could equal the 40 or so years in the wilderness prior to our 94 takeover. He points out that none of the real malefactors - Snow, Hagel, Collins, etc., will be touched by conservative action at all, we will only hurt the true conservative.

He says...." Nice job, guys. Your effort to re-conservativize the Republican Party in Washington by staying home this year will have the effect of massacring the actual conservatives and empowering the moderates who you disdain. Perhaps we can call this counterproductive maneuver "RINO-plasty."

....And "Once the Democrats regain control of Congress, a GOP takeover is going to be exponentially harder than it was in 1994. You're never going to catch the Democrats as flatfooted again. Why are so many conservatives hell-bent on cutting off their nose to spite their face? Are they really willing to throw away a decade's worth of work and go back to square one?"

Even though I want the President - and the congress to cease with bad policies such as:  too much spending, porous borders, allowing conservative judges to be blocked without a vote, I know that is not likely to happen before November. So, we all must continue to do what we can so that the gains since 1994 are not thrown away. Clearly Mr Geraghty is right.

Posted at 8:41am on May 15, 2006 What is a conservative to do?

By Seminole 6

I have just about had it. I am mad, depressed and just cannot contain my disappointment at the entire Republican party for the state of this country. We have long held a majority - so what - it is as if there were Dems running the show. It is totally asinine - the inmates are running the nuthouse. What is a conservative to do?

What is the Republican congress up to? - the supplemental appropriation is still larded up - huge waste of $ - they spend like a drunken Kennedy. They find new rat holes every week to pour our money into. The only positive thing on the economy was that Bush put through some tax cuts early on.

What is DHS doing? - leasing limousines to shuttle their people around their Washington offices and hiring drivers for their staff. Border security - they are informing the Mex government about the location of the minutemen on the border and apparently are trying to get complaints lodged against them by the illegals. The congress - primarily the Republicans, has revived the "guest worker" bill - shorthand for amnesty and continued open borders. Drain on the treasury? No problem, we will just increase the deficit spending. I know the President is announcing some new policy today, but given his past position on illegal immigration, I do not have my hopes up.

What about our judiciary? Judge Luttig just resigned last week- one less real conservative on the bench - not to mention all the judicial nominations which are held up by the Dems. We have a majority; how is that possible, given what has happened? Because there is a concomitant lack of guts on the Republican side of the aisle. We allow the Dems to get away with inventing new uses for filibusters - permit them to whack conservative judges and allow them their prevarication and posturing without ever shouting and calling them the liars and hypocrites that they are.

I initially supported W as he was in line with my views of the world - not a true conservative, but worthy, nevertheless. I have supported W since 9/11 because the most important thing to me was the security of this country and he has shown that he was up to that challenge. The president will be in office another 2+ years and should be able to mostly finish what is needed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But - except for conduct of the war, some temporary tax cuts, and a couple of surprising judicial nominations, W has been a real disappointment. Congress? - they get a failing grade. Republicans do not deserve the reins of authority, and do not deserve my further support.

This great thought from Ann Coulter's column last week captures the present state of politics as I see it....

"Democrats have declared war against Republicans, and Republicans are wandering around like a bunch of ninny Neville Chamberlains, congratulating themselves on their excellent behavior. They'll have some terrific stories about their Gandhi-like passivity to share while sitting in cells at Guantanamo after Hillary is elected.".... Link:(http://news.yahoo.com/s/ucac/20060511/cm_ucac/conservativesneed12stepprogra
mtomanhood
)

Perhaps a bit over the top, but I love her writing, and I think she sums it up pretty well, don't you? I don't know what I will do with my vote this year, or in 08, as I cannot vote for any Dem I have seen and a Republican vote is simply wasted. I think that the middle of the road folks and conservatives need to let Billary get elected in 08 - vote for her and make sure it happens. Then, if the country survives the 4 years of her term,  perhaps Republicans will have grown a pair and we can then elect a congress and president who will actually govern as conservatives for the good of the country.

On the other hand it may be too late to preserve this society at all - terrible thought isn't it?
