By SIConservative

Al Franken, head of Al Franken, Inc. - a corporation that doesn't play by the rules, is once again passing the buck to his accountant for his multi-year tax evasion in California. Franken, one who claims that he wants to go to the Senate to look out for the working man, said, "we have people working on that as we speak." Funny, I don't think working men make five-figure errors like Franken's accountant has repeatedly done and they do their own taxes. In fact, usually when working men make mistakes like that, they get fired. Sometimes they even get sued.

Posted at 1:02am on Mar. 5, 2008 Paul Wins: Your Turn

By SIConservative

Throughout the primary process, I made no secret of my aversion to John McCain. I am rather displeased that he is the nominee, but that's life. Unless he does something completely outlandish, such as choosing a pro-choice running mate, I fully expect that I will cast my ballot for McCain in November, albeit reluctantly. While I will continue to engage those who attempt to defend parts of his record that don't deserve to be defended, I don't plan to attack the candidate and I agree that it is important to have a Republican in the White House next year, even if it's that Republican.

Posted at 1:37pm on Feb. 26, 2008 Friendly Advice for Campaigns and Their Site Designers

By SIConservative

As I have done frequently in the past as a volunteer, an employee, and a citizen, I am currently conducting research on a number of Congressional candidates. I use the sites as most donors and voters do, as a source of information. I'm not a tech guy, and things like coding, videos, and site design are generally over my head. That said, I have viewed enough sites and looked for enough information that I can offer some general recommendations. Some of you may be surprised that sites don't always live up to these baseline expectations, but if you take a look around at some campaign websites, you'll quickly become just as frustrated as I am with how unprofessional and sloppy many Republican candidate sites appear.

Posted at 3:03pm on Feb. 11, 2008 Friendly Advice for McCain Supporters

By SIConservative

I don't like Senator McCain. One of his actions, his leadership in the Gang of 14 agreement, nearly turned me off of politics altogether. Several of his other positions I find abhorrent, including his continued support for embryonic stem-cell research and his scorn for the First Amendment. Even so, I will probably, reluctently cast my ballot for him, though doing so will likely make me physically ill.

Posted at 4:18pm on Jan. 31, 2008 OR Sen: Merkley Says Rules are for Others, Legislation is for Lobbyists

By SIConservative

Apparently confusing Oregon for New Jersey, Democrat House Speaker Jeff Merkley has decided that the rules the don't apply to him. Oregon House members are prohibited from soliciting and accepting contributions during legislative sessions, including the one held in February. Merkley, though, has decided that it would just be too difficult for him to obey the rules and has obtained a ruling from the Legislature's legal office that says it wouldn't apply to his federal campaign.

Posted at 6:02am on Jan. 25, 2008 "Defense is more important than breathing"

By SIConservative

From "The Air Up There", that is one of the truest quotes from any movie ever. In the movie, Kevin Bacon goes to Africa to recruit a player and is mocked by one of the villagers, who says something to the effect of, "You win games by putting the ball in the basket, not waving your hands in the air like a crazy person." The response is something that we need to take to heart, especially as the retirements of people like Reps. Walsh and Ferguson continue.

Posted at 12:34pm on Jan. 24, 2008 Rudy's Priorities

By SIConservative

I was terribly disappointed with mbecker's decision to endorse Rudy, mainly because it was a reminder that after seven abysmal finishes, it seems conceivable, but fortunately not likely, that he could still somehow pull this off. I could lie and say, "I like Rudy... I think he's a wonderful leader... I think he'd make a wonderful President..., etc. but..." Very little of that would be true. He was an excellent Mayor of New York, and if he ran for that position again, I would vote for him in a heartbeat.

Posted at 2:54pm on Jan. 22, 2008 Norma McCorvey Endorses Ron Paul

By SIConservative

On this 35th anniversary of the most tragic decision in this history of the Supreme Court, Norma McCorvey, formerly known as Jane Roe, endorsed Congressman Ron Paul for President. McCorvey, for those of you who don't know, wrote the book Won by Love, an account of her conversion from being the person used by the pro-choice movement to press their national agenda of abortion-on-demand to an ardent pro-life activist. She cited his bill, H.R. 300, as the primary reason for her endorsement.

Posted at 9:45am on Jan. 21, 2008 I Like Mike

By SIConservative

Yes, that's right, I said it. I, the Paul supporting libertarian, small government, "get off my back" libertarian, like Mike Huckabee.

If you're looking for a policy discussion, move along to one of the countless other entries on Huckabee and have a ball. That's extremely important and I'm not especially interested in defending most of his public record. He deserves to catch plenty of flak for it, and if you're among the people who would, as a result, sit out of a Clinton-Huckabee or Obama-Huckabee match-up, so be it. You don't have to live with my conscience and I don't have to live with your's. (That's not to say mine's better than your's. They just work differently.)

Posted at 2:54pm on Jan. 10, 2008 LA SEN: Culture of Hypocrisy Strikes Again

By SIConservative

Crossposted from Republican Senate

Mary Landrieu, already the most vulnerable Democrat in the Senate, has found herself an opponent that may be even more formidable than State Treasurer John Kennedy. The liberal-leaning Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is accusing Landrieu of breaking federal bribery laws. If Landrieu wants to get past this, she better come up with a much better explanation than this.

Posted at 2:15am on Jan. 5, 2008 We're on the Same Side

By SIConservative

If you took a survey of members of the RedState community, I expect that you would find upwards of 80% are pro-life, think out of control federal courts need to be reigned in, support tax reform either in the form of the flat tax or the national sales tax, believe that a stable Iraq is the only acceptable solution, agree that the federal government has gotten way too large, support earmark and litigation reform, and don't want Hillary Clinton to be the next President. Each of those positions, well, save the last apparently, is radically different from the Democrats. We are allies.

Posted at 3:19pm on Dec. 21, 2007 NH SEN: Senator Lazarus?

By SIConservative

The latest ARG numbers on the New Hampshire Senate race are out and they show Sen. Sununu leading Jeanne Shaheen 52-41. Since I had previously posted all of the doom and gloom on this race, I thought it only fair that I throw up the good numbers too.

Let me be clear that I don't buy these numbers. It just doesn't make sense that this race has shifted this much since the summer. To be sure, Sununu's numbers have likely picked up due to the improving situation in Iraq, but I fail to see what would have given him an eleven point lead.

Posted at 8:38am on Dec. 17, 2007 Cutting Romney a Bit More Slack

By SIConservative

Although I have said that Romney would be my choice among the top tier of candidates, like Leon, I never gave a moment of thought to the possibility that a single conversation changed his course on abortion. Sadly, it remains the single most controversial issue in America, largely because the Courts have stopped the people from doing anything about it at every turn. Compromise has not been possible, so everyone is placed into one of two camps regardless of how poor a fit they may be. Based on his statements up until - how can I be nice about this(?)... I don't think I can - up until he decided to run for President, Romney's position had fit nicer than most in the pro-choice camp. Then, according to him, a single conversation made him realize just how much the value of human life had been cheapened.

Posted at 1:55am on Dec. 13, 2007 More Good News from Colorado

By SIConservative

A second poll now shows that the Colorado Senate race in in a statistical dead head, with Rep. Mark Udall and former Rep. Bob Schaffer running neck and neck. Just a few months ago, Udall enjoyed a small but statistically significant lead. That lead has since disappeared. Though dismissed by some early in the race, Schaffer is proving to be an extremely strong candidate. When Schaffer entered the race, Udall enjoyed a massive fundraising advantage and a lead in the polls largely due to the fact that he had declared for the race long before he won his 2006 House race. Now, in spite of those advantages, Udall is running no better than even with Schaffer.
