I'm on the mailing list maintained by these admirable young gents, and their most recent missive came in this morning.
I'll just copy it below, since it speaks for itself and is just too good not to share more widely.
It's also a good reminder that there are plenty of people all around the world - even in Europe (!!) - who "get it" on these things.... even if one of our own major political parties no longer does....
Dear Friends,
On Friday, 27th June 2008, we as FDE - Forum for Democracy and Ethics, in cooperation with IDR, and with the support of Hanns Seidel Foundation, organized a very successful Round Table on the topic : "Constitutional Changes, Electoral Reform, and the new Administrative - Territory Division".
Albania is due to a long political debate on fulfilling the requirements and the criteria for proceeding with the path toward membership in NATO and in EU.We as FDE - Forum for Democracy and Ethics, feel that our vision to contribute and work on building of bridges of communication between politicians and political parties, and between the groups of interests, that is why we continue with intensity bringing people together through different activities as this Round tables, through the Leadership Forum, and through other coming initiatives.
We believe that Albania and Albanians deserves a better future and even a better today.Political will of politicians, and political parties, is not the only key of solution. A great spirit of change and goodness, of cooperation and well-understanding, a revival of morality, integrity and trustworthiness in the country would bring the positive change we are all in need for.
In the middle of all of this political debate, on Reforms that Albania should undertake, we brought together politicians, experts, intellectuals, leaders of civil society, leaders of local governments, members of the parliament, representatives of the government in this Round Table of Friday, 27th June 2008.
We had as main speakers on this Round Table :
1. Mr. Fatos Beja - Deputy/Speaker of Parliament, Member of the Parliament, Democratic Party
2. Mr. Ylli Bufi - Deputy/Speaker of Parliament, Member of the Parliament, Socialist PartyThe Topic on the Constitutional Changes made recently in Albania, and the discussions on the new Electoral Reform that Albania should undertake are very sensitive.
Still the discussion was very open and sincere. We spoke about the need of servant leadership that would take decisions not motivated only politically, but over all being accountable and responsible to the citizens of Albania.
It is important for Albania to have free and fair elections, as we need a qualitative democracy, a qualitative freedom for the citizens of our country.Even the challenges of the new ideas on a new administrative-territory division, should be as a fruit of the motivation to serve citizens and their prosperity. The next local administrative entities should take in mind the clear vision of being efficient and providing better local governance and better services to the citizens. Political motivations and electoral calculations might undermine this necessary process. We need a strong political positioning of courageous politicians and courageous political parties and factors on the side of their citizens.
Thank you very much again to all of you and each-one of you for being so good in your support and encouragement for us. Without you we couldn't have been able to pursue our vision. Your trust and encouragement is feeding our great desire to make a difference in our small country.
Sincerely yours,
Arian Galdini
