Carol Shea-Porter: Can you do that with government money?

I am sorry for bothering the readers of Redstate with this. I called Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's (D-NH) office today, and they haven't answered my question. I have a rule: When Democrats don't answer questions about their behavior, escalate.

You see, according to the Second Quarter Statement of Disbursements of the House, her Congressional office disbursed $5,000 to the New Hampshire Democratic State Committee (NHDSC). According to the FEC filings of the NHDSC, that was for "Access To The Voter File Maintained By The New Hampshire Democratic State Committee." The NHDSC "makes a profit" off the list according to an AP story.

In other words, a Democrat member of Congress is using government funds to provide "profit" to a state Democratic Party. I wonder why I never heard back from her staff about this.

Read on for the questions that I would have liked to ask.

First, I would have asked what the list was? The complete voter file? Parts of it? What other information was in the list? (addresses, party registration, etc.?)

Second, was that information used to target government-funded mail? (Franked mail) If so, does the Congresswoman believe that to be legal and within House rules?

Third, NH Code says:

No party shall use or permit the use of voter information provided by the secretary of state under paragraph I for commercial purposes

and

"Commercial purposes'' means knowingly using, selling, giving, or receiving the checklist information for the purpose of selling or offering for sale any property or service unrelated to an election or political campaign.

Would it be the assessment of the Congresswoman that the list was used for a purpose "unrelated to an election or political campaign"? or was it used for an election or political campaign?

Fourth, since the NHDSC got the list from the NH Secretary of State, why not just buy it from there? I imagine that the list is cheaper than the $5,000 that she paid --- or the $65,000 that they are charging Democratic Presidential campaigns.

I would have liked the opportunity to ask these questions in person. It is too bad that Rep. Shea-Porter's staff didn't give the opportunity.

Well I don't want to indict all of NH, but perhaps we can use some of the border fence money and stop the liberal influx from Mass. Then the state will return to "Live free or die" from "We live off your tax money and do what we want".

Don't feel bad about not getting an answer. I am still waiting for Nita Lowey to call me back from a few years ago and explain why the Electrical Workers Union was her biggest contributor immediately preceeding passage of an pork ridden Communications bill.

Soren, words escape me. Setting aside the whole question of "how deep would they bury her under the jail if she were a Republican", I just have to say, how can a member of the US House so blatantly use government money (i.e, my money and your money) to pad the pockets of a Democrat political entity?

Somebody should literally go to prison for this.

Shea-Porter is so clueless I would not be surprised if she didn't even know there were rules against that kind of thing.

She endorsed Obama on wednesday and as if to prove my point we have this Gem from the link.

Shea-Porter, meanwhile, said that Obama "brings a coolness" to political decisions. "He's the one who, when all the Iraq evidence was being presented, put that cool eye at it, looked at it, and decided that it wasn't enough."

Soren, you have my support; nail her to the wall. Just invite me so I can hold the nails for you.

I guess the Dem's are also mad because the Republican's provide free access to their Voter lists.

Dems charge up to $65K for access to their list.
Repub charge $0

We better win back this seat. Considering how foolish she is, it should be a gimme.
