Hillary and Hollywood, while California burns

Governor Schwarzenegger has announced a state of emergency. Thousands of Americans are losing their homes. They are certainly in my thoughts and prayers.

What about Hillary? Hollywood is throwing her a birthday party, just miles away:

Rob Reiner sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday, Mrs. President" in honor of Senator Hillary Clinton at his Brentwood, California, home on Sunday evening.

Celebrities came to see to see Clinton, D-N.Y., and to celebrate in advance of the former first lady's 60th birthday. Although they didn't bring gifts, celebrities from Jamie Lee Curtis, Magic Johnson, Ted Danson, Bridget Moynihan and Chelsea Handler raised a half a million dollars for the Clinton campaign and enjoyed cocktails and hors deouvres in return.

Despite the massive fires miles away in Malibu, guests were greeted by men dressed in head to toe white, with lavender bow ties saying with "Welcome to the Reiner's," as they shuffled up and down the street parking Bentleys, Porsches, and BMWs.

I hope that the wind was blowing the right direction. I bet it's hard to get the ash and soot (of people's homes and dreams) off those "head to toe white" suits "with lavender bow ties."

Next time she's says she's fighting for Americans, remember that this is what she means.

If a meteor had hit Rob Reiner's house during this party, I would have figured most of the people there would have deservedly gone from a bad to worse state of being.

However, just because a recurring natural disaster was happening relatively nearby, it hardly justified a cancellation of their planned event.

What were they supposed to do, personally go pee on the fire? If you want to criticize Hillary for her politics or the Hollywood liberal elite for its hypocrisy, there are ample legitimate examples with which to work. This is not one of them and you have put yourself in the unenviable position of owing that mound of liberal scum an apology.

personally pee on the fire. None of them seem to have any qualms about personnaly peeing on the president, or the military...why not put their bodily functions to good use?

OK, I realize that they are actually more full of a less effective and certainly more odorous fire retardent, but what the heck!

I would be more interested in what the current President is doing about the fires than the next one. ;)

to do! It is California's fire and CA has massive firefighting resources of its own and available to it through interstate compacts. If the situation develops to a point that CA cannot handle it, it can ask for a federal disaster declaration and call on federal firefighting resources and, of course, get federal aid to help the poor victims who lost their multi-million dollar houses.

This is what stupid Lefties never got about Katrina; first response IS NOT the federal government's job and, other than the military, the Fed has few first response resources. Because of its huge land holdings in the West, the BLM does have some of its own firefighting resources, but even the BLM relies largely on state resources. The Fed's great resource, the military, could provide assistance for evacuation, medical, aircraft support and the like, but its contribution to a wildland fire would be mostly soldiers with no firefighting experience who could be sent out on the fireline with a pulaski - a dangerous and not very productive enterprise, but it would look good on TV.

In Vino Veritas

Rob Reiner told me, and Ted Danson comfirmed, that GWB started the fire by rubbing together two Gitmo freedom fighters. Cheney was later spotted roasting young SCHIP-less children over the flames.

Your analogy is correct. Do you really want to see the same, shrill stuff on your front page that you rightly deride when it originates from the left?

RS is better than this.

Sorry, I have no shoe links.

...we do not (and cannot) tolerate one-sided attacks here, there's a difference between condemning somebody for an action and expressing an opinion about an editorial topic. We rarely overrule our own moderators on such things, but in this case I think that it's appropriate.

And yes, time on site (and quality of participation) plays into this.

But just to be crystal clear -- my complaints about this post are:

1. It's bad for RedState.
2. It's bad for the Republican party.
3. It's diary material

I have no complaint that this is unfair to Clinton. Beyond that, I don't even think this sort of thing hurts her. I think it helps her.

This morning, I saw a bunch of articles in the liberal press about the Republican debate that either mentioned Clinton in the headline or spent a disproportionate amount of space discussing her "presence" at the debate. This is not a good thing for Republicans.

Putting this sort of post on the front page plays into what the press is doing, in my opinion.

Look, one of the great disadvantage of being a clear and dominant favorite in the primaries is that your opponents can start digging dirt on you early and attack you non-stop for months.

While I don't think it's right for our candidates to talk about her very much, Red State seems to me to be ideally suited for such work.

...and I wouldn't have batted an eye if this were a diary (though I probably would still have commented).

Since I'm not a Republican or a conservative, I'm guessing that we've got different reasons for reading and participating on RS. From my perspective, this article is the same sort of thing that immediately turned me off to DailyKOS.

This article pushed Jeff's further down the page and further out of view. Compare the quality of the two articles from the perspective of promoting conservative/Republican ideas. It's like Jekyll and Hyde (And I'm not just saying that because Jeff resurrected my account ;)).

That's how the front page is supposed to work: it's continually refreshed with new content.

This story, too, will be pushed down with new stuff. And the cycle continues.

Every front page story isn't going to be a ten kabillion word, in-depth, well-researched work on a major issue of our time. Sheesh.

I mgiht as well just retire if everything I write has to match up with Jeff's work today.

distinguish as to whether they are coming from the Left or the Right. I agree that it is non-productive for Conservatives to chant the Marie Antoinette meme, or in this case, the Nero Fiddler meme.

Secretary Rice wasn't in close proximity to the disaster, raising money that could have been donated the disaster victims. She was shopping herself, using her own money, no? She wasn't shopping in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Jackson*, was she?

These people are in California and partying while giving all this money away, and nobody's even giving a nod to the fires.

* I know the Democrats are airbrushing hard the fact that the hurricane hit Mississippi, too, and did great damage in that state, mostly because it makes Governor Barbour look so great when compared with Governor Blanco, but truth is truth.

Why doesn't that slimy meathead donate a portion of the proceeds to the victims of the fires?

Why doesn't Clinton?

When I took my walk this morning, I was struck by the huge clouds of smoke came from the southeast and blew across the whole southern horizon.

The only thing missing from this scenario is Al Gore flying over as the smoke was being blown "up!" You know...the left blowing smoke up one's a**!

And Nero fiddled while Rome burned...

I'm here in CA. The Gov has done what he needs to do, which is declare a state of emergency. Now the state fire people can do what THEY are trained to do, and something they do very, very well.

We have these fires every year, and we are preprared when they happen, just like Florida is prepared for hurricanes and responds when they hit. It comes with the territory.

I do, however, understand the point of the post. A quarter of a million people are being asked to leave where they are in San Diego County, and fires are spreading near Simi Vally, Santa Clarita (where the tunnel fire was last week), and in Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside counties as well.

It's going to get worse before it gets better. My county fire department has already sent guys down there and I'm 400 miles away.

We don't need the feds. If it gets bad enough, we call Arizona, Oregon, and others. We respond from here when they call us.

if they're not already there. Pretty much all of the Western States have fire crews on call with equipment ready to respond where needed instantly. Our little town has several guys on one of those teams and since I haven't seen one of the guys who I know pretty well, I'm guessing he's in your neck of the woods.

If you talk to the firefighters, the story related to feds is that they just get in the way. "Send money, don't come west of the Mississippi River. Thank you."

and grew up in Brentwood. They will be covered in choking ash just like the rest of the city. It makes you sick and anyone with emphysema or asthma is endangered. I went through the fires nearly every year and remember one Malibu fire getting to within 1 canyon of our home; I watched the flames from our deck. Everyone was watering their roofs, including my dad; it was terrifying. My hearts go out to these people.

That said, Brentwood is the very seat of limosine liberalism and why does it not surprise me that Meathead (with men in white tuxes and lavender bowties?!?) was entertaining and fundraising for my personal antichrist while this was going on. Brentwood in a nutshell, folks.
