Posted at 2:25pm on Jul. 10, 2008 Mickey Kaus beat me to my (similar) point. Jackson's right about Obama
By spainishirish
Let me preface what will follow with a few quick points. Pregnancy out of wedlock is a national plague that has visited special damage on the black community. Faith-based initiatives should be supported regardless of the proponent's political party. The Rev. Jesse Jackson normally is a self-serving fool. I don't agree entirely with Mickey Kaus here, but since he beat me or anyone else at Redstate to the punch this needs to be noted.

Posted at 2:42pm on Jul. 7, 2008 Where Sen. Kerry is a little right about Sen. McCain's judgment
By spainishirish
Sen. John Kerry, Democrat of Massachussets, decided to set the record straight yesterday about Sen. John McCain's judgment. Kerry doesn't think very highly of it.
Kerry had no kind words his Senate colleague Sunday, accusing McCain of poor decision-making on everything from backing tax cuts for the wealthy to making support for continuing the U.S. military presence in Iraq the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.

Posted at 1:02pm on Jul. 1, 2008 It is official: Obama campaign has decided to smear McCain's military service
By spainishirish
Sen. Jim Webb just made it official. The Obama! campaign has decided to smear the military service of Sen. John McCain to detract from their candidate's lack of service and unsavory associations and affinity with people who hate America.
Webb said:
Webb, a Barack Obama supporter, was on MSNBC's "Countdown" to talk about his G.I. Bill to increase education benefits for returning veterans which is now law. Webb criticized both McCain and President Bush for not supporting the bill. Then, unprompted, Webb weighed in on the debate over retired Gen. Wesley Clark's remark that "riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down" isn't "a qualification to be president."

Posted at 11:37am on Jun. 26, 2008 Heller dissent wanted a political rather than a legal victory...and paid the price.
By spainishirish
Some of the United States Supreme Court justices in Heller didn't even bother to pay lip service to the constitutional issue. At the outset of his dissent, Justice Stevens wrote:
But a conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right does not tell us anything about the scope of that right.
I think this is about right, and about as profound as an observation that the sky is blue. Yet Stevens then goes through a tortured analysis that contradicts the above and basically concludes there is no individual right due to changed political circumstances. Breyer was no better in his concurring dissent in which he ultimately sought to have individual United States District Court judges act as legislators.

In the end, Sen. Barack Obama was selected and not elected. Only through super-delegates, formerly known as Democratic Party political hacks, was he able to clinch the nomination. He is an illegitimate nominee. All the votes were not counted. The election was stolen from Sen. Hillary Clinton. Florida! Michigan! Every vote should count...
blah, blah, blah. I have wanted to write something similar to the above banalities ever since 2000. It does my heart good to be able to do so this morning.

Posted at 2:29pm on May 28, 2008 Why Obama's Auschwitz "gaffe" is a lie that matters
By spainishirish
It is one thing to fabricate a family member's war experiences.
It is quite another to exploit the Holocaust, and particularly the hell that was Auschwitz, for political purposes.
Barack Obama has done both.
As reported by the Associated Press, Sen. Obama said on Memorial Day:
"And the story in our family was is that when he came home, he (Obama's uncle) just went up into the attic and he didn't leave the house for six months," he said.

Posted at 3:09pm on Apr. 29, 2008 How many Wright fictions will Obama supporters accept?
By spainishirish
Sen. Barack Obama's claim that he was unaware of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's racism and anti-Americanism was a joke from the start. Such an assertion defied logic, facts, and reason. Yet many of Obama's supporters indulged that fiction for numerous reasons. Among these were that Chicago's repulsive machine politics required a young Obama to pay tribute to the hatemonger.
As the Wright saga evolved, Obama continued to adjust his rationales. His much-vaunted Philadelphia "race speech" was little more than an apologia for Wright. Obama, liberal that he is, thought it more important to lecture rather than actually to apologize and move on.

Posted at 3:03pm on Mar. 31, 2008 And To Think Andrew Sullivan Once Criticized Hugh Hewitt
By spainishirish
Few Republican bloggers were in the tank for their man to the extent Hugh Hewitt was. Hewitt's wild praise of Mitt Romney raised many eyebrows, some from those who backed the identical candidate. The same happened with bloggers who supported other candidates, of course, but Hugh always was over-the-top.
Blogger Andrew Sullivan at one point likened Hewitt to a prostitute. The irony of that comparison is delicious given what Sullivan does daily on behalf of his man Barack Obama. Sullivan has decided to show Hewitt how to really work a mattress.

Posted at 3:42pm on Mar. 25, 2008 Hugh Hewitt has nothing on Andrew Sullivan
By spainishirish
Once upon a time Andrew Sullivan described Hugh Hewitt as a "prostitute" because of HH's ardent support of GOP primary candidate Mitt Romney. Then Sullivan's personal Lord and Savior Barack Obama became entangled in a scandal and a cage match with Hillary Clinton.
So Sully has decided to show Hugh how to work the mattress. It has been an impressive demonstration.
I won't link to his site, because while there are more vile blogosphere voices than Andrew Sullivan there are few as disingenuous. So not to run afoul of fair use and so forth, let me summarize the Obama items I just read on Andrew Sullivan's website:

Posted at 10:41am on Jan. 18, 2008 In response to St. Louis Conservative: Can Romney win?
By spainishirish
St. Louis Conservative has posted a blog in which he asks whether Romney can win a general election. Given the length of my response, I decided to break this out. My apologies to St. Louis, but I didn't want to have to be as brief as a comment should be.
First, a generalization: if Hillary Clinton is the nominee, John McCain could be our best against her since he doesn't have as extensive of a record of flip-flops and these are her soft spot. Also, if financial scandal or allegations of such were leveled at McCain, Clinton would be in no position to take advantage (this also is a plus for Romney). If Barack Obama were to win, McCain would look old and tired against the younger man. Conversely, Romney would be a better visual against Obama.

By spainishirish
Iowa: Huckabee wins, McCain takes fourth place.
New Hampshire: McCain wins, Romney takes second place.
Michigan: Romney wins...
South Carolina: ??? It isn't improbable even Thompson might win there. He was near the back of the pack last night.
Florida: ??? Same with Giuliani as the above.
If there is any lesson to be learned from the primaries thus far, it is that a win won't translate into another in the next contest. All rules are out the window. Each state has acted independently of the others. As a result, there is no frontrunner.

By spainishirish
The Democratic Party spent the better part of eternity exploiting racial, ethnic, gender, religious, and sexual orientation differences in ways designed to cobble together a winning coalition. Sometimes it has worked, sometimes it has fallen short. Often it has been ugly.
The Clintons once were masters at this game. To watch them catch immense blowback after remarks interpreted as racist has given me great pleasure. Sen. Barack Obama represents a problem for the Clintons and is an enigma to them. He is the face of the post-civil rights era, someone who transcends the issue of race.

Posted at 10:32am on Jan. 10, 2008 Updated: Bad week for Obama continues, Kerry endorsement confirmed, Scrappleface, Kossacks react
By spainishirish
Barack Obama just received his second round of bad news this week.
Sen. John Kerry has endorsed him.
The Ghost of Lost Elections Past apparently has decided to throw his influence behind Obama because no one has discussed John Kerry in recent months. On a serious note, does anyone find this helpful? I admittedly don't know Democratic politics, but there appeared to be a lot of ill will on that side toward "Mr. Electability."

Posted at 1:11am on Nov. 30, 2007 A note to CNN re the high-tech medicine show
By spainishirish
It is hard to describe the CNN/YouTube farce. "Stalinesque" and "Kafkaesque" won't cut it in the modern era. Technology has made slick propaganda (as well as the patently absurd) too easy to produce to look backwards. So someone clever will have to coin a contemporary term for what CNN did. "Coopering?" Naah.
Suffice it to say that RatherGate was not the last breath of the last dinosaur; CNN apparently never considered that the same tools that could produce a high-tech medicine show also could deconstruct it in rather short order.

Posted at 1:29pm on Nov. 2, 2007 Close RealID illegal license loophole...or let Democrats self-destruct defending it
By spainishirish
Senator Clinton's self-inflicted wound at Tuesday's Democratic debate has provided Republicans with a great opportunity to support legislation that is both good policy and good politics: closing the RealID Act of 2005 loophole that permits illegal immigrants to obtain state driver's licenses.
A little history is in order. In 2005, the Republican-led House grappled with the concept of some form of national identification. The end result was the RealID Act. To get there, though, Congress had to concede that since driver's licenses are issued by the states, they could continue to grant them to people inside the United States illegaly. Otherwise, Ron Paul-type Republicans and most Democrats would have joined forces and destroyed the legislation. Some saner civil libertarians also wouldn't buckle without accomodation for federalism concerns. So as it stands now, a potential terrorist could obtain a driver's license and board an airline. Voter fraud possibilities are huge. It was a terrible compromise.
