By Steven Willis

I took the time time to listen to a much longer excerpt from the GD America Sermon.

Everyone should. It is only fair.

Senator Obama said:

"Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way"

Posted at 1:34pm on Jan. 20, 2008 Why I Will Vote for McCain in Florida

By Steven Willis

I plan to vote for John McCain in the Florida primary. Here are 8 reasons:

1. National Defense. The surge is working. McCain played a large role in getting it approved. I believe he will keep us safe. Also, I believe he will have the credibility – and honeymoon period – with Democrats to maintain the fight on terror. Others may not. Bottom line: we are succeeding in Iraq, to a large degree, because of John McCain.

By Steven Willis

In May, 2006, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc. denied a grant request from the Alapaha Council for the Boy Scouts. The Bank later announced the decision resulted because of the Boy Scouts' history of discrimination. This created considerable Redstate controversy at the time. http://www.redstate.com/story/2006/5/12/211027/118 . I believe the controversy was justified, though some of the discussion contained flawed legal analysis.

Posted at 3:02pm on Oct. 7, 2005 Assisted Suicide

By Steven Willis

I'd like to see some comments on the Oregon case involving assisted suicide.

My thoughts are mixed.

  1.  I do not see anything in the federal statute to suggest that Congress indended to regulate controlled substances in the way the attorney general did.
  2.  I do not like the executive branch legislating when Congress has been silent, as it was in this case.  Congress probably did not contemplate, in the original legislation, doctors prescribing medicine to aid patients in killing themselves.  That is Congress' fault and should not, in my opinion, be corrected by the Executive.  In my area - tax law - the Service and Treasury do this all the time . . . and often poorly.  I want the Legisltive Branch to legislate and the Executive Branch to administer or lead.
  3.  Congress rejected a bill to ban laws like Oregon's.  I am not convinced it could do so constitutionally.  However, my understanding of commerce clause jurisprudence leads me to believe that the Court would likely uphold such an attempt.  That, I believe, would be unfortunate.  I believe issues of life and death are best left to the states.  I doubt those issues arise in this case . . . but they might.  A majority could view the Aschcroft policy as an appropriate interpretation of the statue, in which the constitutionality would become an issue.  With luch, we might see some limits placed on the commerce clause.
  4.  I would oppose such a law being passed in Congress.
  5.  I would opposed . . . for now . . . my State of Florida adopting a law like Oregon's.  I don't think there are sufficient safeguards.  Also, I'd like to see Oregon's experiment for a few years.
  6.  I predict the Court will let the Oregon law stand by a vote of at least 7 (or 6) to 2 and possibly even unanimously.
