By streiff

There were giants in the earth in those days...

Over the weekend Bob Denard, soldier, mercenary, mostly owned subsidiary of French intelligence, and legend, died at age 78.

Denard began his career in the French Navy and after discharge served, as has his father, as a colonial police officer in Morrocco and an intelligence operative during the war in Algeria. The ill thought out decolonization process in Africa combined with Soviet adventurism and Nasserist posturing brought Denard to international attention.

with a hat tip to Neptunus Lex

1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments

Cows - Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that, when investigating Mad Cow disease, our government can track a single cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

In this video, someone purporting to be the famed Glenn Greenwald, though it is hard to tell, pries himself free from his Brazilian cabana boy long enough to lecture Petraeus and the rest of us on honesty.

Posted at 5:06pm on Jul. 31, 2007 Victory for Maryland Charter Schools

By streiff

From the Examiner:

Local school boards must give charter schools the same amount of money as traditional public schools, Maryland’s highest court decided Monday.

“Public charter schools are public schools, not prep schools or parochial schools,” said attorney Richard Daniels, who represented two of the charter schools. “They cannot force charter schools to take funding in services, instead of funds.”

By streiff

The cause célèbre over the weekend has to be the rather bizarre case unfolding in Ocean City, Maryland, involving a Ms. Christy Lynn Freeman and at least four dead babies.

While there is no doubt that the headlines are good for circulation numbers, and for the political career of the State's Attorney, color me unimpressed.

More below the fold.

By streiff

From the Washington Post:

Wayne A. Downing, 67, an Army four-star general and special operations commander who became a prominent terrorism adviser to the U.S. government, died July 18 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Ill. He had bacterial meningitis.

Read it all. The man was a soldier's soldier and his passing is a loss to the nation, particularly now.

Creepy.

Probably no other word accurately describes this part of the Romney electoral juggernaut.

From the New York Times.

He travels with an entourage that includes two or three “operations” guys who serve as advance men and a security detail. (Between stops in New Hampshire, this reporter found himself trailing the former governor’s S.U.V. on a back road, only to be led to the shoulder and instructed to “veer off” by a man wearing an earpiece who emerged from Mr. Romney’s car. “We ran your license plate,” he told the reporter, and explained that no one was permitted to follow Mr. Romney’s vehicle.)

In March a Marine special operations unit in Afghanistan was ambushed. In the ensuing fight it is alleged that the unit overreacted, to put it charitably, and killed several Afghan civilians. This resulted in the commander and senior NCO being relieved and that unit being expelled from Afghanistan.

A movement is afoot to defend the actions of that unit.

The Army Green uniform is no more.

I've never been a fan of the Army Green. As some wag somewhere at sometime said, it combined all the worst features of a business suit and a uniform.

But green has been the Army uniform color since 1954 and I am ambivalent.

By streiff

Various shills on the left have been floating what they claim are instances of Republican speakers undercutting the foreign policy of the United States. In this quest they have tried to make Denny Hastert and Newt Gingrich out to be the same sort of bumbling goof as Nancy Pelosi.

One of these stories debuted here on RedState a few minutes ago by a drive-by dipstick:

From conversations with people who have worked around him, Tommy Thompson has a roving eye and for a rather ungainly, homely fellow he has quite a string of successes in that arena.

While he learned the hardway that dealing in Washington as a cabinet secretary was different than dealing in Madison as a governor, he's about to learn that activities that went unremarked as a governor, or cabinet secretary, will gain notice when you are allegedly running for the White House.
