By sturner

Now this could just be Jesse Ventura playing with the media, but a lot of people in Minnesota seem to think he may throw his hat in the race for Senate. (Story Here)

I lived in Minnesota for five years and was there during the Governor reign of Ventura. I also have a lot of friends who are involved in politics in the area and actually think he could have a dramatic impact on the race. He's fiscally conservative, socially liberal, and commands a ton of media attention both in the State as well as nationally. He's one of those guys you absolutely hate one day, then cheer something he does the next. In an odd way, his personality was something refreshing from a politician. He didn't pander to anyone and just called people out when he felt it was needed. That approach also made it impossible for him to accomplish anything as Governor.

I like money and I like having more of my money and giving the government less. They felt this would get the economy going and I consider it a big win-win.

Posted at 6:03pm on Mar. 3, 2008 Things Just Got More Expensive In Chicago

By sturner

With Obama-mania, the Rezko trial, and some actual optimism this year for Chicago Cubs baseball, the recent Cook County Board budget has taken a backseat in the local news. After a vote the other day, it shouldn't.

Chicago now has the highest sales tax in the country, a whopping 1% higher than the next city on the list and nearly 2% higher than competing cities such as New York and Los Angeles. This is due to the doubling of the county sales tax to 1.75%. Considering the board was 1 vote shy of raising it to 2.75%, I guess I should consider myself lucky.
