By Tabris

While browsing a lovely site named digg, I came across this little blog gem. Here's a picture of the oh-so-lovely flag flying above an upside-down US flag. The city's been described as a "haven for illegals", which has disbanded the traffic unit of it's police force so illegals need not worry about having their car towed. The flag was raised after closing time, when our flag was lowered. The police were only able to lower the Mexican flag to half-mast because the cords got tangled.

By Tabris

From the diaires by Erick . . .

Some of you in SoCal may have already heard about this, but down near the towns of Calexico and Mexicali, there is growing unrest over the fact that the United States intends to fix a leaky  canal, thereby diverting enough water for 112 000 families a year over to San Diego, 100 miles west.

Posted at 2:15pm on Jun. 15, 2006 Liquid Body Armor for Iraq

By Tabris

ScienCentral has an article describing a new liquid body armor that when agitated (such as by a bullet), nanoparticles in it cause the liquid to stiffen and prevent sharp objects from penetrating in most cases. When applied to Kevlar armor, it adds about 20% more weight, and greatly enhances the ability of Kevlar to stop bullets and shrapnel.

Posted at 8:26am on Jun. 2, 2006 Tinfoil Hats HELP The Government

By Tabris

Update [2006-6-2 7:26:53 by Moe Lane]: Must... hold... out... must... resist... commands... must... hold... out... the... beams... the... beams... see... the... light... KHAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!

(pause)

It has been decided to promote this to the front page and declare it to be an open thread. Also, please note that Karl Rove is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

From Popular Science, kids at MIT  determined that the radio frequency range 1.2-2.6GHz (reserved for the federal government) is enhanced by actual tinfoil hats by about 20-30%, whereas in other frequencies it is reduced.

Clearly (to paraphrase one of the students), the government has propogated this lie that tinfoil hats block brain control rays. Maybe now more people should recommend tinfoil hats.

Posted at 7:21am on Jun. 2, 2006 Bush Worst President Since WWII

By Tabris

I heard a survey quoted on the radio today that a sample of people were asked who they think the worst and best presidents were since World War II. It seems that 34% said Bush, Nixon was in second with I think about 24%, and they ignored the rest. Reagan was considered the best, followed by Clinton (exact percentages I can't remember as I had just woken up).

Here is the link to the main story. I see the potential benefits of this, but at the same time, I raelly dislike the idea of being tracked 24/7, with no privacy protection.

By Tabris

I just read that the UN has removed the final seals at the sites used to convert Yellowcake to a more enriched form of uranium, allowing it to be used as fuel in a nuclear reactor.

This isn't so much a political diary as much as an advice one...I have trouble thinking of other places to inquire about this, especially considering the rationale of the users here, basically regarding an abortion.

By Tabris

Hilary has not only joined forces with Jack Thompson in looking to hold video game companies liable for children getting their games, but now wants there to be a federal penalty for selling these games to minors. It seems a grandmother is suing Take-Two because she bought this game rated M (remember, 17+, that's the main issue, right?) for her 14 year-old grandson.

Posted at 1:00pm on Jul. 27, 2005 War on Terror no longer called as such

By Tabris

Apparently, the "War on Terror" is now being called the "Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism".

I found that somewhat interesting and would like to garner your thoughts on the name change. I'm still calling it the War on Terror more or less because it's the same thing in a different package, and WoT is simply much quicker to say (and quicker to abbreviate). I think the new name doesn't reflect the overall goals much more, but just sounds more dramatic and righteous.

I like War on Terror more. Sounds more firm and unrelenting.

It seems that Discovery has lifted off successfully...I just saw a news clip of it, but missed the launch. I didn't know it was launching this early. Stupid me. Anyone else hopeful this will establish US superiority in space?

I'm hoping that many more missions follow this, not getting into the debate over the shuttle's early retirement.

Posted at 10:12am on Jul. 6, 2005 Obesity Epidemic in US Military?

By Tabris

I stumbled upon this a few minutes ago, and apparently the military is suffering a similar fate as a good percentage of our country regarding obesity.

Col. Gaston Bathalon recommends relaxing the weight standards to keep the recruiting pool from dwindling too much.

Does anyone else see a problem with this?
