Obama's shocker on defense

Promoted by Dan McLaughlin. Because nothing says "Change" like reviving the Left's defense policy demands as of 1983: Nuclear Freeze, opposing "the weaponization of space," fetishization of arms control talks with the Soviets Russia. Next he will be talking about Grenada and Pershing missiles. Still, it is nice to see Obama pushing ideas that aren't from the 1970s, I guess...

UPDATE: Note that the source of this video is from the Hillary camp. Not going quietly, eh?

There is nothing more one needs to add. It speaks for itself.
He doesn't stand a chance if this goes national.

Its just plain idiotic to suggest we ban production of all fissile materials. At least if we want any nuclear reactors.

Boy this is a really stupid set of plans on the military to run on when there are a lot of trouble spots in the world and a lot of people that don't like America (not just in Berkley).

Just one comment-
He discusses how he will slow the development of future combat systems. This is so ridiculous on so many fronts. He is showing what an absolute novice he truly is on all matters that relate to securing this nation.

Gaw-this guy just scares me. And this little you-tube just helped to ratchet up my anxiety yet again. I'm going to be on Zanac or Prozac one before the general election. Oh no, then I'll be like Mrs. Trendy. Yikes! Now what do I do? :>)

Personally, I've found scotch to help. Got me through the primary season so far. That or us Econ people are naturally drawn to the booze, one or the other (I'm thinking the latter).

Seriously, though, get involved. Contact local and state party officials to see what you can do to help. Call in to talk radio programs (even those of a more liberal bent... I do okay with that, but YMMV). Keep blogging. Also, be sure to inject some humor into the situation... helps keep one from going off the deep end should Gehennom actually freeze over.

Right now, chocolate and pre-mixed Starbucks frappuccinos are helping me cope. I can't do that too much longer though or I will be as big as a house. :>)

My biggest problem is my fellow conservatives. When I've raised stuff like Obama's dovishness with them, they dismiss it as relatively unimportant compared to McCain's "shamnesty."

As far as they are concerned, McCain is no better than Obama because the "real threat to America" is the 12 million illegal aliens. Since McCain isn't going to purge America of those aliens, they couldn't care less if Obama promised to zero out the defense budget altogether.

They feel so strongly about "shamnesty" that they wouldn't vote for McCain even if Noam Chomsky or Cindy Sheehan were the Democratic nominee.

Shame on Michelle Malkin.

Why are you blaming Michelle Malkin for McCain's bad judgment ?

It was his screwup and now its ours for making him our nominee. You might as well blame Mitt for running a campaign cult of personality, evangelicals for trying to shove Huckabee down everybody's throat, or Fred for running a senate campaign not a presidential race.

...there's no changing that. I don't particularly like McCain, but he is worlds better than Obama, and frankly I shudder at the thought of a president Obama with Democrat control of Congress.

People who support Bush but bash McCain are hypocrites. McCain is probably more conservative than Bush, especially on limited government and spending.

It has to be remembered that the US Army's basket of next-generation AFVs are called the Future Combat System(s). Methinks a public debate on the merits of a program whose basic assumptions have been shredded by the American experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan would be good for both the military and the body politic. (As would such a discussion on most of the USAF's banner projects.)

However, given the inanity of his "fissile material" comment, I've got my doubts that the Future Combat System(s) as opposed to more general future combat systems.

I've got my doubts that he's referring to the FCS rather than more general future combat systems, rather.

I am recommending it anyway because the you-tube needs to get lots of attention.

slice and dice that segment with news reports about Russia and Putin and some of what he is saying and you'll have the news saying that Putin is a dictator right next to Barak saying he wants to kiss and make up with them.

Run those all day and all night in districts that have manufacturing plants and all of your upper midwest states that value strong defense and you'll have McCain in the white house.

The MSM isn't going to, that's for sure.

McCain isn't showing the most skill on the campaign trail here lately, IMO. So I doubt his campaign is going to pound him on anything.

Now we understand how he earned his #1 ranking for top liberal in the Senate. I don't even think Howard Dean would have had the balls to go as far as Obama did in that ad.

Once upon a time, there was an advanced but expensive new heavy bomber under development. It was also a political football, with politicians putting their own pork into the design, driving up the price even higher.

Peace-minded Congressmen said the plane was too expensive and unnecessary. We had been at peace for years now, and such a powerful bomber would be provocative and give our "warmongering" President more excuses to drag America into war. So Congress tried to cancel the plane altogether, and ordered a less expensive but less capable medium bomber as an alternative.

The President intervened, but the most he could get was the production of only a relative few of the expensive heavy bombers. But at least he kept the production line open, in case Congress ever changed their mind and wanted to buy more.

Then the balloon went up and we found ourselves at war.

Most of the less expensive B-18 Bolo medium bombers that Congress had ordered, were destroyed on the ground by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor.

The "wasteful and unnecessary" plane that the peaceniks had tried so hard to cancel was the B-17 Flying Fortress.

Fighting for conservatism one day at a time.

To watch The Obama, a potential candidate for the Presidency of the United States explain to anyone willing to listen (including our enemies) that he intends to drastically curtail the growth of the armed forces during a time of war with a foe intent on our destruction is a display of typical Liberal delusion.
Liberals: If we disarm, they'll disarm.
Wrong! Let them disarm first.
Liberals: We'll talk and negotiate with the enemy, and they'll see the wisdom of our arguement.
Wrong Again! Hasn't worked before.
Liberals: Cutting military spending and refusing to fight against people who want to kill us will make the country safer.
Wrong yet again! Didn't work for the last democrat President.

Liberals want to fund the great socialist society they envision that America can be at the expense of our National Security, if only they could get the power.
The Obama and his ilk would trade military strength for socialized health care.
Liberals believe that there is never a reason to go to war so a military is just an unessesary expense.
Liberals believe that Republicans love the war.
We don't. We hate it.
However, we see the need for it to be fought to a successful or at least a favorable conclusion for the United States.
Our enemies don't need to Love us or even like us,but it is very important that they fear us.
If they don't fear us, they will attack us.
Of that,I have no doubt.
Until a Liberal or a democrat comes along that understands that America must be strong to be a force for good in the world,America can't afford to have a Liberal like The Obama or Hillary as President.

via CampaignSpot.NationalReview.com:

From the AP:

TYLER, Texas (AP) _ Republican presidential hopeful John McCain mocked Democrat Barack Obama on Wednesday for he saying he would take action as president "if al-Qaida is forming a base in Iraq."

"When you examine that statement, it's pretty remarkable," McCain told a crowd in Tyler, Texas.

"I have some news. Al-Qaida is in Iraq. It's called 'al-Qaida in Iraq,'" McCain said, drawing laughter at Obama's expense.

McCain said he had not watched the Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday night but was told of Obama's response when asked if as president he would reserve the right to send U.S. troops back into Iraq to quell an insurrection or civil war.

Obama did not say whether he'd send troops but responded: ''As commander in chief, I will always reserve the right to make sure that we are looking out for American interests. And if al-Qaida is forming a base in Iraq, then we will have to act in a way that secures the American homeland and our interests abroad.''

You can't afford the price of free corn.

The Quadrennial Defense Review was instituted by Congress as a reform measure to devise a long-term defense plan that wouldn't swing wildly from year to year due to political controversies.

That makes it impossible for liberals like Obama to take an immediate meat-axe to the defense budget. So Obama is proposing an "independent review board" to oppose the recommendations of the QDR.

I can guarantee you that the "independent review board" will be packed with doves, like Lawrence Korb. Korb is already one of Obama's advisers. In 2002, he had proposed a TWENTY PERCENT CUT in defense spending, the savings to go to domestic programs. The fact that America had already gone to war against al-Qaeda, didn't faze him at all. His assumption was that "international cooperation" on military operations will lessen the need for U.S. military forces.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/kfiles/b35337.html

Only modern liberals can seriously propose cutting military spending by 20% in the middle of a war.

And only supreme egotistical liberals like Korb and Obama believe that their personal likability is going to persuade the West Europeans to send their own children off to foreign battlefields to get killed.

Right now, most European nations have limited their military commitments in the War on Terror to peacekeeping and support operations, not combat. Canada is showing signs of doing the same thing soon. Obama seems to think they will change their minds after he replaces Bush in the White House. He's in for a rude awakening.

Here's one article cataloguing their caterwhauls.

"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.

is correct.

The QDR has to define and enemy to define force structure. Therefore the QDR's bias is towards identifying what is known as a "peer competitor."

The reason the Army went from 18 divisions to 10 was the fall of the Soviet Union. Absent that threat there was really no large scale threat that seemed plausible which led to the 1.5 war or win-hold-win strategy focused on war with Iraq and North Korea simultaneously.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

a future force? It seems everyone tells the Pentagon what they screwed up, no one can tell them how to stop screwing it.

"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.

ultimately you have to use a planning scenario that you can sell to Congress that is plausible and that will not be undercut. The problem with the 1 1/2 war scenario featured after the fall of the USSR was that you couldn't make the case that it would be necessary for us to engage in either of those wars. What if, for instance, we decided to let the ROKs handle the ground campaign and we only did air and naval stuff? Suddenly you don't need even 10 divisions you need maybe 6.

The QDR is probably the best system we have, but force structure is only going to be increased, or maintained, if the potential threat is an existential threat to the US like the USSR was.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

it also determines the size and composition of the armed forces and the missions they train for. The QDR is not a budgetary document at all and has less of an impact on year to year Defense spending than does any Defense Appropriation Bill.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

But here is a speech that Obama gave to the CFR back in October....

We will not pursue unilateral disarmament. As long as nuclear weapons exist, we'll retain a strong nuclear deterrent. But we'll keep our commitment under the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty on the long road towards eliminating nuclear weapons. We'll work with Russia to take U.S. and Russian ballistic missiles off hair-trigger alert, and to dramatically reduce the stockpiles of our nuclear weapons and material. We'll start by seeking a global ban on the production of fissile material for weapons. And we'll set a goal to expand the U.S.-Russian ban on intermediate-range missiles so that the agreement is global.

As we do this, we'll be in a better position to lead the world in enforcing the rules of the road if we firmly abide by those rules. It's time to stop giving countries like Iran and North Korea an excuse. It's time for America to lead. When I'm President, we'll strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty so that nations that don't comply will automatically face strong international sanctions.

I realize you guys probably think that Obama is a complete idiot but do you really think he would be advocating for the elimination of civilian nuclear power around the world? Because he didn't explicitly state that in his statements about nuclear weapon non-proliferation?

When I look at the other things he says in the video, ref the QDR and Future Combat System I can only conclude that either he's a dunce or he doesn't really understand anything he was saying and was reading a script prepared by a dunce. This has been reinforced by his "al Qaeda taking over a country" comment in last night's debate.

What I think is that I have a transcript of his speech to the Council of Foreign Relations and he specifically mentions weapons grade fissile materials.

I have this video in which all he is talking about is military matters and nuclear non-proliferation. And in this speech you guys are parsing it to suggest that, out of the blue, he decided to switch gears and randomly talk about international energy policy.

So I don't think the video is fake but I have no idea whether it is has been edited and I suspect it has.

There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why ... I dream of things that never were and ask why not. - Robert Kennedy

and it is good to know that Obama is not going to eliminate nuclear power along with our ability to defend ourselves against nuclear attack.

As for the rest of the quote, however, it only drives home how wrong-headed Obama's policies are. Obama apparently beleives that nations such as Iran and North Korea are pursuing WMD to balance American power; thus, we should curtail our own nuclear program to "stop giving them an excuse" and, presumably, make things more fair. In fact, rogue states like Iran and North Korea are far more concerned with projecting power against their neighbors than they are with challenging the United States. We are relevant to these nations only because we are (often) the only force checing their efforts at regional domination. Disarmament in any form will only encourage this type of state - a fact repeated throughout history.

Also, Obama's belief that there exists a "road towards the elimination of nuclear weapons" - while absolutely adorable - ignores everything we know about warfare and the interaction of nations. Has humankind ever eliminated a type of weapon without replacing it with a more powerful weapon? I appreciate the sunny spirit of Obama's optimism regarding this issue (given how depressing his optimism is on domestic issues), but sometimes the genie really can't go back in the bottle.

Is there a quote giving further explanation for Obama's comment that he would "slow the development of future weapons systems?" That is the statement that really blew my mind, and I actually do believe that Obama must have tempered this sentiment somewhere. Otherwise, he really is warmed-over McGovern.

Thanks for the above comment, though; I think it did add something to the conversation. I, for one, appreciated it.

and Russia disarming their nukes will make N Korea and Iran and any other world dictators just sit down and say "Hey look the US got rid of nukes so we don't want them anymore?"

Do you really think that is realistic? Is it even smart?

And I would like to know how well limiting N Korea to only nuclear power worked out with that whole fissile material thing?

The reality is that the world has nukes, the have nots want them, and it doesn't matter if the haves ditch their whole stockpile, the have nots will still want them, so frankly I would rather keep my pile. I am okay with reducing parts of it, but I don't think it is safe policy to say "Hey look guys, we are unarmed"

here. As you can see, the original was posted directly by the campaign.

In its unedited version, Obama's "give peace a chance" policy sounds is presented in exactly the same manner as the video linked above. It was provided as a supportive message to something called Caucus4Priorities, a "progressive activist organization" which appears to be solely dedicated to eviscerating our national defenses. Specicially their position seems to be that defense systems geared towards missles, submarines, or enemy aircraft are relics of a "bygone era" and should be scrapped.

Wow.

Which means that we can reliably assume that Senator Obama was pandering to the anti-nuke freaks after all.

"Hey wait a minute, don't listen to that, I was just pandering."

But anyone who remembers the Carter years isn't going to stay on the Obama bandwagon too long IMO.

THIS GUY REALLY IS OFF HIS ROCKER..GOOD THING I RESIDE IN AZ.IAM USED TO THE HEAT AND THE SAND!!!THIS GUY TALKS LIKE A KOOL-AID DRINKER.

It's considered rude in the online community. It's kindof like shouting in a small room when talking to your friends.

Fighting for conservatism one day at a time.
