The Republican Party is Committing Suicide

You may have clicked on this blog in anger, thinking it's yet another "McCain is blah blah blah" post. Rest easy, friend -- it is not. Nor is it about Romney, or any other candidate for President.

It is, however, a distress call -- a S.O.S. to conservatives and to Republicans everywhere. Our party is committing suicide before our eyes.

Two Republican lawmakers are providing yet another example that if the GOP should perish, it was through self-inflicted wounds (from Junkfood Science):

It has actually happened. Lawmakers have proposed legislation that forbids restaurants and food establishments from serving food to anyone who is obese (as defined by the State). Under this bill, food establishments are to be monitored for compliance under the State Department of Health and violators will have their business permits revoked.

House Bill 282 was introduced in the 2008 Mississippi legislative session on Friday by Representative W.T. Mayhall, Jr., a retired pharmaceutical salesman with DuPont-Merk. Its co-authors are Bobby Shows, a businessman, and John Read, a pharmacist.

I thought for sure that this was yet another example of overreach by those government-loving liberals, and clicked on the "honorable" gentlemen's names.

Imagine my shock and horror to discover that W.T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read are Republicans. And apparently, they weren't joking when they introduced the bill:

I called lead author, Rep. Mayhall, and asked if this was serious legislation or tongue-in-cheek to make a point. He kindly took a moment to answer my question while the legislature was in session. He said that while, regrettably, he doesn’t believe his bill will pass, this is serious. He wrote it, he said, because of the “urgency of the obesity crisis and need for government action.” He hopes it will “call attention to the serious problem of obesity and what it is costing the Medicare system.” So, yes, this is for real and these elected officials actually believe this stuff.Oh yes, apparently this is for real, and these elected Republicans actually believe this stuff.

Urgency of the obesity crisis and need for government action? Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater are rolling over in their graves. Apparently, "limited government" is a concept entirely foreign to these Republican lawmakers.

If these two aren't voted out at the very next opportunity in the Republican primaries in Mississippi, I am prepared to announce the death of the Republican Party as we know it.

Perhaps the Redstate members from Mississippi could provide some context as to how these nanny-staters carry the Republican brand?

This is COMPLETELY against what the GOP should be about. This is "Big Government" bullshit. The federal government, on either side of the spectrum has no right to dictate the output of goods and services to the consumers, especially something as direct as ordering food at a restaurant. Why are these things happening, has everyone forgotten what Conservatism stands for?

That kind of language is not acceptable on this site.

Have a skinny dude order for you. Order for yourself two diet Cokes for you and hand one over to the dude.

Or, unless you have the exact same voice as Orson Welles or John Candy, order pickup. Otherwise, get a small woman to order over the phone for you. Come in to pick it up, and decide to sit down anyway.

If you're a woman, tell them you're eating for two, yell about how DARE they call your pregnant ass fat, and then stage a hormonal crying fit in the middle of the restaurant.

Order the buffet. Promise to eat a carrot stick. Then don't

Tell the waitperson that you used to order a whole crapload more than what you just ordered, and explain that you're following a diet. Have a note from some doctor at the ready.

Refuse to comply until they show you their written policy defining obesity. Ask the manager to bring forth the most obese staff members, and ask them directly if they are prohibited from eat there as well.

Make them find a scale and weigh you. If you actually do break the limit, tell them that their scale must be wrong, that it must properly calibrated before the restaurant can properly assess your true weight.

Make them weight the skinny dude gets weighed, too. Have him carry lead ingots in his pants to goof up the scale.

Demand that they adjust their menu according to the new guidelines to avoid discriminating against those who have clearly been overexposed to "restaurant fats".

Threaten to call Oprah. Not as publicity, but as the Brute Squad.

Remember! -- Stoopid laws are doomed to fail, if good people would only see to their failure.

That is all.

Get yourself on the TV and ensure all politicians that those who continue to hijack personal responsibilities shall be circulated out of office. Republicans will shape up, Democrats will go hard the other way, and will eventually lose power thanks to common sense.

to take the rhetoric that "Republicans stand for limited government" seriously when guys like this are allowed to run for office with the (R) next to their names.

Like I said, if the Mississippi Republicans throw these two out in the primary, all is well. IF they do not... I'm sorry, it's the end.

These two are STATE legislators, which means they are local politicians. In the aftermath of the 2008 primaries, I know a number of conservatives are talking about getting more involved at the local level.

Well, conservatives of MS -- here's your chance. Show the rest of us that we are still the party of Reagan.

This just proves my point. The GOP and their conservative base are destine to spend time in wilderness.

When Frank Luntz ask his Dem panel "how many of you would want to pay more taxes"..everyone in that room raised their hand.

Prepare your flashlights and get supplies stored up because we're going to a spend along time walking in the wilderness.

I hope I'm wrong but I'm thinking NOT!

What are they the worst co dependents in the universe ?

What they mean is they want other people to pay more taxes.

since FDR

we have to move step by step back out of it

four years of Jimmah last time. Four years of high unemployment, high taxes, and a deep recession will lower those raised hands.

It's about time you were loyal to the party. They're Republicans, after all.

back when i was a kid where you have to be so tall to ride certain rides they even had a standing rule to measure your height.

It is RINO's like these as to why we have no choice or vote this year, not even in our own primary. The sheeple have been dumbed down so much by the MSM that they have effectively eliminated any chance we had of electing a true conservative. I'm SICK of the whole lot of these pretenders. It's beyond time to rise up and let our voices be heard. Flood these RINO's in boxes with letters, emails and phone calls. Start locally and then expand. DON'T STOP THEM COMING!!! We killed the McAmnesty bill, we can do this! Now, who wants their party back???

Don't blame me, I voted for Fred!

Wake up conservatives.

The Wall Street Journal and Fox News have sold you out for the safe establishment candidate John McCain. Look at the lastest FNC polls --McCain lobbied to be a Democrat along with Jim Jeffords -- where is this story on Fox News?

"Fair Balanced and Unafraid" ... not anymore.

-- Doc

FNC has been one of the biggest anti-McCain outlets. Hannity has been only thinly veiling his support for Romney and recently came out with an endorsement. FNC is where Coulter said she'll vote for Hillary over McCain and even campaign for Hillary.

O'Reilly is no fan of McCain. Even the "news" people seemed down about McCain's win. When Brit Hume announced McCain won FL, there was a morose tone of dejection.

FNC was really friendly to Rudy. Even in their FL coverage, they treated him like he was in the top tier while ignoring Huck entirely. Maybe it's because they are based in NYC, but Rudy got more coverage than his showing deserved.

But the idea that Fox likes McCain is silly. McCain had to run against the conservative media, or more accurately around it.

McCain, but I don't think Fox News would tell their polster what results they wanted. Poll available here:

http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/020108_election_release_web.pdf

The telephone poll sampled 297 Republicans between Jan 30 and 31.

John McCain 48%
Mitt Romney 20%
Mike Huckabee 19%
Ron Paul 5%

In a two man race (no Hukabee or Paul), Republicans favored McCain 62% to 29%.

This has to be some kind of ploy. Either to illustrate absurd nanny-stating, or money pits in Medicare ... something. Seriously. Who could possibly put this forward seriously?

I saw he said it was real, but if he shows his hand too quickly then it wouldn't serve to highlight right? Right???

Come on. Seriously.
absentee

But look at the man's own words.

I thought for sure this was some sort of symbolic cynical protest type of deal -- "Hey, if people like the nanny state so much, let me show 'em how bad it really is" kind of a thing.

But it doesn't look that way.

Like I said, the voters of Mississippi, from these two gents' districts, need to step up.

I dunno, but I see it too. The guest speaker at a recent meeting of the county GOP was a Republican state senator. The guy spent the entire time extolling the glories of regulating evil corporations, and calling for immediate action to combat global warming.

Big applause when he finished. Arrggghh.

Two months early. Please tell me it ain't so. Would Huck supporters support this law?

Did anyone ask the candidates if they'd have vetoed SCHIP like GWB has?
Or if they'd have signed the omnibus spending bill?
