By Tony82

With all the attention being paid to the ridiculously naive policies advocated by Barack Obama in this video, perhaps the most damaging statement has gone neglected so far.

At about the 1:20 mark, Obama states "I don't take money from ... powerful defense contractors". This is a demonstrably false statement.

Posted at 8:34pm on Jun. 19, 2007 SC Treasurer Thomas Ravenel Suspended after Drug Indictment

By Tony82

Via Drudge comes this bad news out of South Carolina.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP, WLTX) -- South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel has been suspended from office, following his indictment by a federal grand jury for distribution of cocaine.

"Given the grave nature of these charges and what is alleged in this indictment, we're left with no choice but to suspend Treasurer Ravenel immediately," Governor Mark Sanford said in a written release. "These are obviously very serious allegations that we're constitutionally bound to act upon, and they'll ultimately be decided by the courts."

The political implications of this are hugely disappointing for conservatives. More...

Posted at 4:24am on Jun. 8, 2007 Let's Kill the Phrase "Undocumented Worker"

By Tony82

The phrase "undocumented worker" ought to kill any discussion about immigration. Those that use this euphemistic phrase are being just plain insincere and disingenuous. They seek to evade the inconvenient fact that illegal immigrants are in the country, well, illegally. Thus, they need to sugarcoat the status of illegals by identifying them as just "undocumented."

The phrase "undocumented worker" implies that an honest, law-abiding worker just plain lost his documents in some poor, unfortunate mishap. This phrase completely ignores the fact that illegal immigrants broke the law by flouting our nation's immigration laws.

Posted at 5:35pm on Jun. 6, 2007 Prospects of GOP Filibuster of Senate Immigration Bill

By Tony82

With the Cornyn amendment being killed, and a looming showdown over cloture for the Senate's immigration/amnesty bill, it's worth taking a look at how likely a filibuster can be sustained.

Forty-one votes are needed to sustain a filibuster and defeat the invocation of cloture. Republicans start with 49 senators. With the death of Sen. Thomas, however, they only have 48 right now.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush has decided not to reauthorize the controversial domestic warrantless surveillance program for terrorism suspects and to put it under the authority of a secret special court, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Wednesday.

Posted at 2:48pm on Jan. 12, 2007 Pro-growth policy from a Dem Congress? A letter to my Congressman

By Tony82

The following is a draft of my letter to my Congressman, Ed Royce (R-CA-40th) about possibly getting some pro-growth tax bills through a Democratic Congress. My points are basically the following: (1) these are good policies, (2) enough Dems might actually support them, and (3) if the Dems block these, the GOP can turn them into potent weapons.

Feel free to comment on the letter as well as the ideas themselves.

"Crank triumphant in 5th" blared the headline on the Rocky Mountain News election page. The subtitle reads: "10:34 p.m. Republican Jeff Crank will square off against Democrat Jay Fawcett for the 5th Congressional District seat in the November general election."

Posted at 11:31am on May 16, 2006 The GOP needs a Club for Growth-like "Club for Immigration Law Enforcement"

By Tony82

I firmly believe that the remedy to disaffection with one's political party is to reform it from within, rather than leave it for another party.

For conservatives upset over the Republican Party's stance on immigration, the best way to fix that is to reform the GOP, not bolt for some third party.

Getting involved in primary elections is the best way to reform the party. Disaffection over the GOP's stance on spending and taxes had led to the formation of the Club for Growth. Part of what has led to the CFG's effectiveness and influence is that it has quickly become the "king maker" in many contested Republican primaries. The Club has put big-spending liberal Republicans on notice by its willingness to challenge incumbents in primaries.

To correct the GOP's disappointing (to say the least) immigration stance, we need another organization like the Club for Growth, but with an emphasis on immigration law enforcement and border control instead of taxes and spending.

This new organization, backed with donations from disaffected conservatives all across the country, would put Republican office holders and would-be office holders on notice: get tough on illegal immigration or else. Incumbent Congressmen and Senators would not be allowed to get too comfy in their seats if they knew this organization would make their lives miserable come primary season. In open seats, this organization would fund the best candidate and would be the difference maker in the primary election.

I know that there are good think tanks like the Center for Immigration Studies, but the immigration reform movement needs to be more actively involved in elections.
