Minuteman Founder attacked at Columbia University

Tonight at Columbia University Free Speech took quite the hit. At an event hosted by the college Republicans at Columbia we were reminded that the left advocates free speech only for those who regurgitate the same tripe that they spew. This evening Minuteman founder Jim Gilchrist was attacked by members of left-wing groups while on campus to give a speech at the behest of the College Republicans. Members of a University sanctioned Chicano group, the university chapter of the socialists and other fringe groups rushed the stage and started a melee just as Gilchrist began his speech.

Chanting slogans like racist and KKK the group never afforded Gilchrist the chance to speak. The even was hosted by the College Republicans who, in a twist of irony, were deemed by the University administration to be the cause of the fracas for "inviting such a group to speak on campus.." No responsibility for the brawl that occurred afterwards was levied against the groups which stormed the stage with signs in Arabic and Spanish. Gilchrist was safely taken out of the building by campus security, but not before punches were thrown on stage and the event came to a screeching halt.

Afterwards those who perpetrated the crime released a statement afterwards claiming, as usually, that they were the victims. They claimed that they were peacefully trying to get their point across (that point being that anyone who doesn’t advocate rights for illegal immigrants is a racist) when they peacefully entered the stage and were met with physical violence.

Fortunately the "tale of the tape" demonstrates something completely different. It clearly shows that they violently took the stage (less than one minute after Gilchrist began to speak) with the intent to disrupt the event, not to peacefully retort to what Gilchrist had to say. The comment itself drips with irony in that they never afforded the man the chance to speak.

This is just another symptom in what is turning into a disease at institutions of higher learning. Life on campuses across the country is being overtaken and run by these fringe groups and organizations that represent a scant small percentage of the overall student body (and population of this country in general). These militant groups goal is to eliminate any and all sort of dissenting opinion. Anyone, or any position, that does not come in complete agreement with their mantra, or their dogma, is immediately shouted down as racist, phobic, extremist, when it is in fact these groups which are racist, phobic and extremist.

Tonight was just another example of how far left the left has actually gone, and why it is so dangerous to "sit out" this election and let the fringe groups that pull the strings of the Pelosi's, Kennedy's, Kerry's et al control either house of Congress.

UPDATE:

As for now, Columbia College Republican Chris Kulawik will be on Hannity tonight to explain what went on.

Even more audacity from the adminstration: The latest STILL has the adminstration blaming the College Republicans for the storming of the stage by the protestors. THey are not holding the protestors at fault, only the CR for bringing the minutemen there which naturally incited the leftists, and for trying to stop them from rushing the stage.

I wonder how this will affect President Bollingers $4 Billion dollar fund raising effort with those from the middle and right.

...how much mainstream media attention this will get?

Controversial Speaker Triggers Rage

(RS) - Jim Gilchrist, founder of the hardline anti-immigration group The Minutemen, was shouted down by student activists as he made a controversial appearance at Columbia Univerity.

Gilchrist, whose group has been branded 'vigilante' even by Republicans such as President Bush....

If you're seeing shades of gray, it's because you're not looking close enough to see the black and white dots.

"a controversial appearance" into "an incindiary rant against Hispanics" and you've got it...

college Republicans started using these same tactics at events sponsored by the leftist groups on campus?

For a quick trip down memory lane, Lee Bollinger is still President of Columbia. Same guy who refused to do anything about the adjunct prof who called for "a million Mogadishus". Major universities are simply pathetic.

Bollinger is the man responsible for defending the University of Michigan's affirmative racism policies (oops, did I say that out loud? I think he calls them "affirmative action" but to each their own, right?) back when he was the president of that university. To say I have no faith in him to do the right thing in this situation would be an understatement.

"I could explain, but that would be very long, very convoluted, and make you look very stupid. Nobody wants that... except maybe me."

But neither do I donate to the place.

(Journalism School, I should specify. I had nothing to do with the football team back then.)

New York Daily News

Other than that, I can't find anything that isn't a blog, and the Daily News is hardly what I would call a "reputable media outlet."

I wonder how quickly it would have made the news if the roles had been reversed; if the on-campus equivalent to the Minutemen had charged the stage as a LASA representative spoke...?

"Gee, I wonder what would happen if college Republicans started using these same tactics at events sponsored by the leftist groups on campus?"

I guess mbecker beat me to the question...

At my time at Iowa State, any speaker that is considered divisive would get heckled no matter who they were. Michael Moore and Ann Coulter especially both heckled to a point of sheer annoyance.

In 1998, leftists students and outside agitators, with the help the Rupp administration, had an Accuracy in Academia conference kicked off campus. To my knowledge, no student was punished, not even those who tried to break into a private event.
The net effect was that the College Republicans were cowed into submission for 4 years. This was the catalyst behind the formation of the Columbia College Conservative Club.

Lee Bollinger used an affirmative action protest bake sale held by CCCC as an excuse to not only fund the Diversocrats but also to make Affirmative Action a goal in hiring. Whites can be hired provided they promote progressive and tolerant views. I believe that the self-proclaimed first ammendment specialist is quite happy with the turn of events. Since the administration is already trying to shift blame on non-student guests, I hate to think what the university will do now.

If I were inclined to use hysterical language, I might be tempted to compare this with the round-up of Jews after Krystallnacht and the fining of Jewish communities for the clean up of the mess.

It doesn't really surprise me. These tenured tyrants are awful (censored) lucky that we on the Right actually do have respect for the law, although I do face the temptation to storm their offices to drag them out and give them a bloody Roman-style flogging. In fact, I'm waiting for these thugs to actually committ a premeditated assault on their target and wouldn't be surprised by the university adminis-traitors basically saying that the victim deserved it. It's times like these where I really wish that some of us could take up the Left's methods in retaliation.
