A 19-year-old college freshman placed first in the April 1 primary for the office of Muskogee, a city of 38,000 in eastern Oklahoma.
John Tyler Hammons snagged 42% of the vote in the primary, to 38% for his nearest rival, 70-year-old Herschel McBride, who has previously served the city as mayor.
While city politics appear not to be terribly partisan, Hammons is VP of the Muskogee County Young Republicans.
Maybe it's just me, but there seems to be a certain ... Jindalesque air about the young man.
The runoff is Tuesday, May 13.
Go, Tyler, go!
It's not entirely uncommon in smaller towns. This is on the larger size of places I've heard electing 19-year old students who go to school several hours away.

...my impression is that the office of the mayor is largely ceremonial. He presides over the city council. The city is actually run by a city manager.
Wilburton, OK, just down the road, has a 22 y.o. sitting mayor.
And Bobby Jindal was placed in charge of LA's Dept of Health & Hospitals at 24 IIRC.

Huge difference between 19 and 24.

I still think that someone having that kind of power, real or perceived, is likely a bad thing at that age.
Heck, I worry a lot about young football stars in college. that kind of stuff goes to your head.
I'm not viciously opposed if it's not a powerful position, but I still think it can be a problem.

I heartily applaud one of our own getting out there, but this is too much:
No matter what he decides to do, Tyler hopes to enter into politics by serving both the people of Oklahoma and the United States by serving as the Governor of Oklahoma and then as the President of the United States.
Little presumptuous, don't you think?

politicians (e.g. town council) is like trying to herd cats at night wearing a blindfold! I wish him all the best.

Okay, sorry, that's just my reflexively anti-OU impulse.
Since he's a member of the local YoungRepubs, I not only forgive his deplorable choice of junior colleges, but I applaud him, and I rescind the order for a truckload of rotting turnips currently being shipped to his lawn.

Uhh, sorry, no.
19 is just too young.
I might, maybe be OK with that if he were just part of the city council, but Mayor?
That's just not cool. And I would have even thought that when I was 19.
