By zuiko

The I35W bridge collapse has been used from day one to justify massive increases in spending at both the state and federal levels.

Well, the NTSB just came out with a preliminary finding about the collapse and I find it interesting:

Posted at 7:20pm on Jan. 5, 2007 Social Security for Illegal Aliens: We agreed to it years ago

By zuiko

The Washington Times reports that the Bush administration came to agreement with the Mexican government all the way back in 2004 about providing SS benefits to those here illegally, working under stolen identities, at the time they qualify for an amnesty -- or a path to citizenship, or whatever you want to call it.

Posted at 12:10am on Jan. 4, 2007 Drug legalization: Why it isn't the answer

By zuiko

I know this isn't the most popular position on this issue with the online community, who tend to be much more libertarian than the populace as a whole, but let me start off by saying I’m not unsympathetic to the arguments that drugs should be legalized. That was my position a decade ago when I regularly threw away my vote on the Losertarian--errr--Libertaran Party. This seems to come up a lot, so I figured it might be useful to address the common arguments in favor of legalization in one place.

Posted at 1:16am on Nov. 7, 2006 Lieberman moving right?

By zuiko

This seems to be a good sign, if you ignore the overall slant of this article and look at the actual quotes.

He says:

"It's taken me as an independent-minded Democrat and really empowered me to be more independent," said Lieberman, the Democrats' 2000 vice presidential nominee. "Parties are important, but they're not as important as the public interest."

Posted at 5:29pm on Oct. 24, 2006 Why the Minnesota Transportation Amendment is a bad idea

By zuiko

The Minnesota Transportation Amendment that is appearing on ballots November 7th seems to be supported by everybody. It is being supported by both Republican Governor Pawlenty and his challenger, Attorney General Hatch. It is being supported by both Democrats and Republicans in the legislature. There's an organized campaign with signs, stickers, and advertisements in favor of the amendment, but nothing at all in evidence against it.

Posted at 9:58pm on Oct. 16, 2006 One more reason we can't let them win

By zuiko

Bill Ritter, a Democrat running for Governor of Colorado, it's just weak on illegal immigration. During his tenure as Denver DA, he put together a record of having been every illegal alien felon's best friend.

While he was DA:

The office allowed defendants to plead guilty to trespassing on agricultural land instead of the crimes they actually were accused of 152 times from 1998 through 2004. Other counties - Jefferson, Adams and Arapahoe - had only 75 convictions combined for the crime, according to court records.

Posted at 6:21pm on Sep. 8, 2006 What does this have to do with homeland security?

By zuiko

The Department of Justice has just made its first big bust as part of their new focus on adult entertainment.

What I don't understand is why we are dedicating resources to this task. This is apparently a priority of the Bush Administration, since both Gonzales and Ashcroft have been involved with the dedication of resources to deal with the "problem" of adult entertainment. These videos are certainly not my cup of tea, but what purpose is served by attempting to criminalize the production and sale of this material? Who is the victim here? The adults who order these tapes through the mail? The adults that perform in them? What is the threat? What problem are we attempting to solve through this action?

Posted at 10:01pm on Aug. 29, 2006 Another domestic terrorist attack?

By zuiko

A man intentionally runs over 15 people in San Fransisco today.

One man has died and at least 14 people were injured when a Fremont man purposefully drove his sport-utility vehicle onto sidewalks and crosswalks in San Francisco and Fremont today

Clearly, this was not accidental since the attacks on pedestrians took place at different times and different locations throughout the day.

By zuiko

Forget about trying to rein in activist courts by appointing conservative and originalist judges. Senator Jeff Sessions says that appointing judges to the remaining open DC circuit court seats is just too expensive.

Posted at 7:02am on May 20, 2006 Pros and Cons of losing in 2006

By zuiko

I'm beginning to think about the consequences of losing the House in 2006. I've been pretty optimistic in every previous election where the NY Times told us we were supposed to lose, but not this time. Unless we turn it around, I don't see us holding onto control of the House.

Let's consider the pros and cons of losing the House.

Posted at 7:54pm on Jan. 25, 2006 It is past time to build the wall

By zuiko

The advantages a wall on the southern border would have in stopping illegal immigration have already been discussed.

How about the advantage in putting an end to Mexican Army incursions like this one? Certainly, with a wall along the entire border, it would be much harder to drive SUVs loaded with tons of illegal drugs into US territory.
