Posted at 4:31pm on May 21, 2008 Take note, Republicans: 62% want Smaller Government

By zroxx

This aimed particularly at that majority of Republicans voting to pass the Farm Bill, who apparently believe they should be swimming against the tide when it comes to the public's desire for limited government and the lower taxes that could accompany it, but also to those occasional posters on RedState who are under the impression that the fight against big government has been lost:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 62% of voters would prefer fewer government services with lower taxes. Nearly a third (29%) disagrees and would rather have a bigger government with higher taxes. Ten percent (10%) are not sure. [cite]

Posted at 9:59am on May 15, 2008 Farm Bill Veto (Override) Watch

By zroxx

The House voted on the Farm Bill yesterday, and passed it, 318-106. In a disappointing reminder of just how liberal House (R)'s have become, we see that a majority of them (100-91) actually voted in favor of the laundry list of special interest handouts and un-necessary welfare payments that make up the "Farm, Nutrition, and Bioenergy Act".

Posted at 5:52pm on Dec. 4, 2007 Federal Addiction to Subsidies: Cornflakes and Bourbon Hit Hardest...

By zroxx

Today from the Cato Institute, an observation on the size and scope of our Federal government's out of control subsidization of almost everything. While the text is inaccurate (the number of subsidies are up 51% from 1990, and up 24% since 2000) the chart they offer as a visual is discouraging to view. Don't let that stop you from gawking, and then reading the linked report from last year that offers more details on the breadth of subsidies.

Posted at 3:11pm on Dec. 4, 2007 My favorite John Bolton quote

By zroxx

This talk today about Reagan has gotten the limited government part of my brain all hot and bothered. I couldn't help but recall a recent interview with John Bolton and one particular piece that had caught my fancy, and managed to find it online again. It is at least tangentially related to Reagan's small government philosophy - and it is evident than Reagan and Bolton both derived their beliefs about the proper role of government from some of the same sources...

Posted at 10:39pm on Nov. 11, 2007 I see your SCHIP rhetoric... and raise your actions on COAA

By zroxx

If Congressional Democrats want the public to believe that Republicans, who were willing to increase SCHIP spending by $14B over five years instead of $35B over the same period of time, don't care about children, then said Democrats must now admit that they abhor educated Americans and favor corporations, given that they have introduced legislation that threatens to terminate all federal financial aid to students at those institutions of higher education that do not make a satisfactory effort of carrying out the business objectives of the MPAA and RIAA.

Not merely increase by a smaller amount, mind you - reduce to zero.

Posted at 5:31am on Aug. 16, 2007 An "alternative" view of marriage

By zroxx

I've been asked what I think "the primary purpose of the institution" of marriage is. In response I'll lay out a view of marriage that I've dubbed "alternative" because it's been indirectly implied that I must be the one with the radical oddball position. Naturally I think my view is the accurate one, but let's start with the assumption that I'm about to drop a definition that flies in the face of several millennia worth of tradition and go from there.

By zroxx

John Aravosis reports that "the Washington Post published a pro-gay editorial regarding marriage." However, finding the gray cloud in the silver lining for his cause, Aravosis further notes that "they called us "homosexuals" throughout the piece, and that's not great. It's degrading and offensive and archaic.", and then proceeds to explain his intriguing position.

I feel some personal stake here, having commonly used "homosexual" as my own preferred - and presumed neutral - designation for those citizens who are sexually oriented to persons of the same gender when discussing issues relevant to same. But with one of my fellow citizens now lodging protest against its use, I figure I should take a closer look at the case being made for ushering out the word "homosexual":
