Posted at 7:17am on Oct. 3, 2006 Mourning Congressman Helen Chenoweth-Hage

By DanH

Congressman is not a typo. Helen Chenoweth-Hage refused to be referred to as "Congresswoman". She served in Idaho's 1st Congressional district from 1995-2001. She pledged to serve three terms, and although she felt the term limits pledge was silly, she kept her word. She died in a car accident yesterday.

While I read almost none of today's media, almost all of which is devoted to attacking Republicans and conservative principles, I did hear about her death.

By DanH

What do you think is the most important election of this year, the one the most resources should be devoted to, the one Republicans should absolutely not lose?

Would you say Senator Santorum's reelection? That would be my first instinct. I admit I have more antipathy for the people around Bob Casey Jr. (like Ed Rendell and Chuck Schumer) than I do for Bob Casey Jr. himself.

Posted at 11:26pm on Jan. 31, 2006 A Medicare D success story

By DanH

I'm not going to defend some of the arm-twisting used to pass the Medicare bill, or the stupidity of a huge new federal bloat.

I'm only mentioning this anecdote because I am sick and tired of media articles which paint all seniors as being so decimated by the new Medicare rules, they practically have to resort to armed robbery to pay for their medication.

My aunt is practically an invalid. Her son is mildly retarded (I'm sorry if that is not the proper word these days) and can only hold down the most minimal of jobs. They are perpetually close to poverty. My aunt has for several years now gone without eight or nine different prescripions because her program told her she would have to pay high prices.

Today, I talked to her and she was in better spirits than she has been in a long time. She said under the new Medicare plan, she now has to pay only a few dollars each for six of the medications she had gone without. She had been resigned to suffering without these medications. She is a strong woman and never complained, but the agony was written all over her face.

The Medicare program has helped to ease her pain. And as many reservations as I have about the Medicare entitlement, I want people to know that this new law was responsible for making at least one senior citizen very happy.

Posted at 1:56pm on Jan. 17, 2006 Propaganda is Not a Good Thing

By DanH

I, for no good reason, had my TV on in my home office, just as background noise. On the set came Martha Stewart's talk show, an attempt to knit a fuzzy blanket for herself out of her old prison grey.

Susan Sarandon was a guest. We all know Susan. Susan was direct, charming, and soothing, as she can so often be. She chatted about her kids and the ageing process. She was such a good Suzy Homemaker, you could ALMOST overlook the liberal propaganda she sprinkled into her comments.
