This is the kind of message that John McCain needs to be getting out there . . . rhetoric vs. reality. The rhetoric of Barrack Obama vs. the reality of McCain's entire career. For all the "change" that Obama's been promising, its McCain who has fought and won change over and over his entire Senate career.
As for Republican candidates across the country, this kind of campaign - for country - is one that all factions can rally around without being bound to some of McCain's more moderate views. If Republican candidates can attach themselves to McCain in the manner of his personal popularity. Make this about experience, about what the country will face with a president in training pants. We don't have to love McCain, we just have to respect him. In close Senate races with GOP incumbents (Sununu of New Hampshire, Smith of Oregon, and Coleman of Minnesota come to mind), McCain has the caliber of appeal that can help these three come across the finish line. In open races here in Virginia and in Colorado, McCain's kind of appeal can really help the brand and with two candidates (Schaeffer and Gilmore) who are coming from behind but are in traditional red states. Furthermore, its hard to link Schaffer and Gilmore to Bush because one retired in '03 and the other in '02

I just finished watching John McCain speak in Louisiana, and the most startling thing I heard was McCain say that with him in the White House, there would be no permanent campaign that has existed in both the Clinton and Bush Administrations. But there is a real reason for that, because both were seeking reelection and in this era one has to start almost instantly because of the pressures of challengers now starting so soon. What I take away from McCain's statement is this could be his last campaign and he has no interest in framing him administration around running for reelection.

He's going to be fighter, thats for sure. Jim Gilmore is a working class guy, raised in the blue collar area of Richmond called "the Fan" and he's always run that way. I saw this today at work, a very long interview the DCTimes did with Jim Gilmore. This is why I support Gilmore, he talks about national issues that a US senator will have to deal with. As much as I respect Bob Marshall, his campaign has more resembled running for a statewide seat in the House of Delegates. Notice we don't hear Mark Warner talking about these issues? The key will be for Gilmore to break-through the "Mark Warner Is God" narrative that is out there and get him to answer some of these tough questions with real answers the same way Gilmore does. As many know, a small national story erupted two years ago when the town of Herndon, VA in Fairfax County attempted to open a taxpayer financed day laborer center. In the ensuing election, pro-law candidate Steve DeBenedettis was elected mayor.
Well, two years later and after a contentious election where Mayor Steve was attacked for being a divider, I am pleased to report he was reelected by 52% of the vote in a three-way race. Its a small election in a small town, but its nice to see that even in the heart of blue Northern Virginia some sanity still exists.

For regular readers of my blog, many know that I was not comfortable with Jim Gilmore's candidacy for the US Senate. I boosted many candidates, most notably Eric Cantor. But in the end, nobody stood up and I respected Gov. Gilmore for taking on a tough election instead of passing like several members of our congressional delegation (I'm looking at you Davis, Cantor, and Forbes). So I backed Gilmore and I've resisted every attempt to go back on it.

To say the least, this is good news. Nothing like a strong presidential candidate to bring the party back in the state. This could have important meaning for races up here in Northern Virginia. What has helped spark the rise of Democrats in Northern Virginia is a total disdain for George W. Bush, but John McCain is a different animal, and its clear the left doesn't know how to deal with him. Democrat leaders from Howard Dean on down are using the Bush Model in attacking McCain, because is all they know. They pick every small problem, and go after the Arizona senator guns-a-blazing, yet it doesn't stick. Why? Because John McCain is one of the most respected political figures in America. Secondly, criticism of McCain from Democrats somehow rings hollow after years of constantly praising McCain for his "independence" and "honesty." For them to turn around and suddenly attempt to recreate McCain as a Bush Boogeyman is simply improbable. Furthermore, McCain seems to be succeeding widely in uniting all of the party around him. I saw it personally on a local level last night over at the Fairfax City Mass Meeting. Everyone was please with McCain, and all the candidates and elects expressed the need to rally around McCain to get him elected. What these numbers are showing is the longer Hilary and Obama go at each other, the more it exposes their weakness and lack of qualifications - a stark contrast to the sterling record of John McCain and all his service to America.
