By nilram
Recently the Met Office released its temperature anomoly data for January 2008. The temperature was 0.037C, the lowest temperature since February 1994.
The temperature for January 2007 was 0.632C give a one year (Jan 2007 - Jan 2008) drop of 0.595C. For those of you keeping rack this is 80% of the 0.74+/-0.18C increase between 1905 and 2005 reported in the IPCC Fourth Assessment report and nearly 100% of 0.6+/-.2C increase between 1900 and 2000 reported in the IPCC Third Assessment report.

Posted at 5:09pm on Mar. 6, 2007 My $.02 on Ann Coulter
By nilram
I've bit my tongue; I've held my breath; and I've counted to 10 but I can refrain from commenting no more. My position on the Coulter affair is this: The directors are right. Ms Coulter should not have said "f****t" and she should apologize. She should apologize to anyone that found her remarks offensive. She should apologize to the the candidates (especially Governor Romney) and she should apologize to the organizers of CPAC.

Posted at 4:40pm on Feb. 26, 2007 Global Warming on Gilligan's Island
By nilram
The men of Gilligan's Island are working feverishly in the middle of the night. The women are sleeping, blissfully unaware of the impending disaster. The island is sinking. The men must build an ark to escape the sinking island.
The global warming debate has always reminded me of this second season episode of Gilligan's Island, "Quick Before It Sinks"*. The problem is: the island is not sinking.
In the episode, no one asks the Professor how he knows the island is sinking. They just assume that he's the professor; he's smart; he knows what he's doing and he's probably right.
In real life, we have our own "Professors". The esteemed scientists who worked with the IPCC to create the various assessment reports. They too are bright and probably know what they're doing. They're telling us that the Earth is warming and that we need to take drastic action now. Many do not want to question our real life "Professors", declaring the debate to be over.

Posted at 6:45pm on Nov. 3, 2006 Guardian: Bush is more dangerous than Kim Jong-Il.
By nilram
I happened to stumble across this article in the Guardian today and I thought it would be of some interest here.
To summarize, the article states the results of a poll taken in several countries. The results of the question "Which leader poses a danger to world peace?" Osama bin laden came in first with 87% of the vote, George Bush second with 75% of the vote and Kim Jong-Il third with 69%.

Posted at 10:04pm on Oct. 12, 2006 Global Warming: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt?
By nilram
We've all heard that humans are causing the Earth to warm and that this "fact" is beyond debate.
I decided to look into this claim a bit. I started by looking at the IPCC Third Assessment Report (TAR) where I found this in the executive summary:
The SAR concluded: "The balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate".
