On this day in 1979 Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. The reminder is here:

We should all pine for the days when Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reagan led the free world. Think for a moment, and imagine these two giants were leaders of the free world on 9/11. Would we be at loggerheads over prosecuting a war against the barbarians who threaten us with destruction? I think not.

First Gulf War commenced on this day in 1991. Cannot believe that it passed me by until I saw this.

Unfortunately too much emphasis was placed upon the coalition and the implications of upsetting other countries and the UN, if we continued the fight and gave Saddam his due. Bad advice taken by Bush the Elder led us to rely on UN sanctions to keep Saddam at bay. Of course, we all know how that worked out.

Why is the Muslim terrorist unlike any other we have faced? They recognize no limits, nor reason, in waging this war. It is an unconfined worldwide jihad - although our military presence in SWAsia has concentrated it to a large extent. That said, why does the West - especially the average US citizen, not understand this is war without end, at least until we submit and are subsumed into Islam? The entire non Muslim world is their acknowledged prize. It won't happen tomorrow, nor perhaps even during our lifetime, but incrementally it will come, if we allow it.

For many of us who seek information to understand the current state of this society, and who are concerned with the long term survival of our way of life, all of the news is bad. In fact, I would say it is going to hell in the proverbial hand basket.
Conservatives, libertarians, centrists, non-nannystaters and everyone who strives to survive is being beaten down, submerged really, by the litany of bizarre policies created when inmates run the asylum. It appears we have lost the political war, the war on terror and apparently the hearts and minds of the voters; most of whom have no allegiance to anything, except PC and government largesse. Even though we vote, and plan to right the ship, we have lost this society. Pick a subject and disagree if you wish.

Posted at 11:33pm on Oct. 27, 2006 If we lose the Congress, what then?
By Seminole 6
I vacillate as to whether we will lose either or both of the houses of Congress, but fear we might. Was never that concerned with the Senate, as a loss there appeared unlikely. Until recently, I did not believe that we would fail in the House, now the pundits -- right leaners included -- are forecasting 16-20 seats lost. First hopeful/confident, then deflated. The leftward skew/drift of the polls wears me down.

By Seminole 6
Is there something wrong with the Republican party and the conservative movement? The problem I see is - the Republican Party is not conservative, it is presently without conviction -there is nothing wrong with the conservative movement, but it is homeless
Has the Republican party completely abandoned the conservative and will conservatives heed the Republican siren song, when voting time comes in November 06, and more importantly, 08? Can we conservatives survive without a national party for focus? If not, can the libertarian / independent middle be a home for Conservatism. My answers are yes, yes and no, no. See if you agree.

Posted at 9:07am on Aug. 7, 2006 Hiroshima anniversary
By Seminole 6
Notice Academic Elephant had a comment about the anniversary this morning and thought I would toss in my 2 cents worth.
Local moonbats observed the anniversary yesterday with antiwar fervor. Local media echoed the lefty line of America/war = bad. Their observance, and the media coverage, mentioned the people killed in the bombing - tragic, but necessary - and never once told the truth about why and what it was all about. Unfortunately, most of the great unwashed are deficient in history, and probably think Hiroshima was routine US agression and murder, instead of an effort to save lives and end a war we did not start.

By Seminole 6
Must rain a bit on the veto parade, as I cannot let this event pass without commenting to inject a dose of reality.
I do understand the delight of some that the President is vetoing this stem cell bill. However, I am bothered that we are 6 years into his administration and this is (apparently) the President's first veto. Many will argue that this particular veto is misused or misplaced and that this big stick, wielded by most Presidents, has been allowed to atrophy:

Saw a new poll (AP-Ipsos, whatever that is) out today. Another Democratic campaign commercial by dead tree media. Title: Most Americans Plan to Vote for Democrats
Here it is -http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060714/ap_on_go_co/republicans_ap_poll_2
With that title you know what is coming. The "poll found that Americans by an almost 3-to-1 margin hold the GOP-controlled Congress in low regard and profess a desire to see Democrats wrest control after a dozen years of Republican rule."
Pure spin? We all know that the congress is lower than low in polling. 3 to 1 margin? What was the question?

Posted at 3:05pm on May 30, 2006 Defense of the Indefensible
By Seminole 6
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Sensenbrenner appeared to be one politico who was concerned with the American people, because of his uncompromising stand on the Senate's reckless, anti-American bill, on illegal aliens. This morning when I saw that he is over the top on the matter of executing a search warrant on Rep Jefferson's office, I though - well, well, a 180° turn away from what is right.
At least one of the "witnesses" at the Committee Hearing has accused Justice and the FBI of intentional intimidation of Congress: "One witness at the hearing, former Rep. Bob Walker, R-Pa., said Congress should play hardball in seeking answers to its questions by subpoenaing administration documents authorizing the raid. The American people should be deeply concerned that a decision to conduct a raid on Congress was made consciously and evidently at high levels inside the Justice Department and the FBI," Walker told the panel. "If the Rayburn raid was a precedent for coming attractions and intimidating tactics, the way Congress responds initially must be improved." Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060530/ap_on_go_co/raid_on_congress_4.
To what end this intimidation was applied was not specified but the charge of illegal, extraconstitutional activity by the administration, is clear.
Then I saw Wm. F. Buckley's thoughts on the subject, and while he did not chastise the FBI for executing the warrant as it did, neither did he exonerate. WFB seems to censure the administration for prevarication in the wiretapping controversy and generally overreaching. But then he also ridicules the House for overextending the "privileged from arrest....." clause, into a blanket search immunity. Perhaps he is saying a pox on both? Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060530/ap_on_go_co/raid_on_congress_4
When this kerfluffle commenced, my thoughts were that the House is waving the biggest red herring they have ever invented. There is no possible reading that gives them any immunity from search and seizure under the constitution. After further reflection, should there be?
Looking back, history shows that it takes very little to swing the balance of power from representative to totalitarian government. I do not maintain that we will have a totalitarian state in the future, certainly not with GWB at the helm, but would an immunity such as the House advocates act as extra insurance against the possibility? More importantly, would granting such an immunity create, rather than solve, problems?
