Posted at 6:31pm on May 18, 2007 A 17-Point Immigration Reform Plan
By FredMaidment
This "Immigration Reform" bill sucks.
Except for the politicians in Washington, no one likes it. The illegal aliens complain that they have to pay $5,000 to become legal. Legal immigrants complain that while they did it right, the illegals are being rewarded for their bad behavior. Many American citizens complain that the illegals get anything at all! Others think the plan is too complex. Even the Mexican Government doesn't like it!
Rarely will Washington ever come up with a plan that all constituents like. Even still, no one likes this plan.
Ignoring Mexico's corrupt politicians and the people who broke the law to come to this country, I believe I have a plan to stop illegal immigration that satisfies the vast majority of Americans. Most Americans want to stop illegal immigration as shown here, here, and here.
So here is my 17-Point Immigration Reform plan:

Posted at 10:27am on Apr. 3, 2007 Gun-Free Zones Do Not Work
By FredMaidment
In yet another example of college students, faculty and staff left defenseless by current gun-control legislation, Rebecca Griego, a staffer at the University of Washington was killed in her office by an enraged ex-boyfriend.
I have detailed other examples of people being left defenseless on college campuses here and elsewhere. There are numerous examples of crimes committed with guns or other weapons in areas where those weapons are illegal to possess, either by criminals who have no respect for the law or by individuals believing they have no reason to live, as in this case.

By FredMaidment
An Associated Press article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution caught my interest today. It details a recent flap where the Wal-Mart's CEO stated that doing buisiness in the Big Apple was so expensive that, "I don't care if we are ever here."
Wal-Mart execs were quick to point out that the Chief Executive was speaking of Manhattan, not the other four boroughs.

Can you believe this guy is considered educated?
I just love my college newspaper. It gives me so much cannon fodder for my blog.
Ignoring the second-half of his commentary, where he simply degenerates into anti-war demagoguery, I'd like to point something out to Mr. Brealt:
Where in the Constitution does it say that the Government of the United States and its member States are required to fund programs like Peachcare?

From WSB Radio:
ATLANTA (AP) -- The mother of an 18-year-old arrested in a bank theft scheme said Monday that her daughter isn't a bandit, she just fell in with the wrong crowd and made a bad choice.
...
"I want (people) to know that her and Heather both are not bandits," Joy Miller told ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday." "They're little girls that made a bad choice."
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past several days, the Barbie Bandits made national media headlines when they "held-up" a bank in the affluent Acworth suburb of Atlanta. The giggling gangsters grabbed an undisclosed but "considerable" sum of money. "Barbie Bandits" was the nickname given the girls just hours after the story broke.

I couldn't have said it better myself!
My favorite Economics Professor, Dr. Dwight Lee of the University of Georgia, had an op-ed piece published in the AJC yesterday.
The article describes the positive environmental impact of the Internal Combustion Engine (that's the gasoline-powered motor to you and me) and why the environmental community should be enthralled with its favorite "whipping-boy" machine.

Posted at 2:35pm on Feb. 12, 2007 The Dixie Chicks Won 5 Grammys. So what?
By FredMaidment
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I will make no secret of the fact that I am no fan of the entertainment industry's award shows. From the Grammys to the Emmys to the Oscars to the Pulitzers, I have never seen a group of people so infatuated with themselves. Meanwhile, important awards, like the Donald W. Fogerty Award (which most of you have never heard of) or the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award are totally ignored by the media.
The Dixie Chicks took home five Grammy Awards last night, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The trio, which was ostracised from the Country music scene after lead singer Natalie Maines made derogatory statements about George Bush at a concert in London, has seen little commercial success of their music. Specifically, Ms. Maines stated, "We are ashamed George Bush is from Texas!" which resulted in cheers from the British audience and anger from their American fan base.

Posted at 12:16pm on Feb. 2, 2007 Certain Democratic Victory in '08: Raising the Minimum Wage
By FredMaidment
There are those who argue that the recently passed increase in the minimum wage, which now requires a conference to reconcile the Senate and House bills, shows the Democrats "fighting for the people." Others claim it is "vote buying." Still others say it is political payback to unions, whose members wages are indexed to the minimum wage.
While all of that may be true, there is another reason for the Democrats' virulent push for the minimum wage increase: It guarantees a Democratic Party victory in 2008.

After finally getting some time to peruse the pages of my December issue of American Rifleman, I came across something interesting on page 73. The headline in question? "70 Million More Guns, 38 Percent Less Violent Crime." While the article is unfortunately not available online, I thought I would list some of the interesting statistics, all sourced from "[r]ecently released FBI crime data."

Posted at 7:30pm on Dec. 8, 2006 How the Income Tax Hurts Everybody - Except the Wealthy
By FredMaidment
The income tax has been both hailed and decried as a "Wealth Redistribution" program.
Liberals and particularly socialists hail the income tax because, they say, it fixes the problem of income disparity. Take the income from the rich and give it to the poor Robin Hood style through Welfare programs, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, pork-barrel projects, and other government spending.
Conservatives and libertarians disparage the income tax as wealth-envy, class warfare, and a violation of their property rights.
Both sides are correct in their assessment. The income tax does do something to "level" income distribution. It is also a tool for class warfare. Both sides, however, miss the larger issue: The income tax preserves the power of those who are powerful.
