By swamp_yankee
In case you haven't seen it, Bob Dole eviscerates Scott McClellan in a personal email to McClellan. Displaying his characteristic wit, Dole unloads on McClellan and apparently let the email become public. The letter is a first rate smackdown. He relentlessly attacks McClellan’s motives and manhood. This isn’t much of a diary, but this letter is so beautiful that it’s a 'must share'. First Newt and now Dole. Welcome back boys. This is just nasty and awesome. Enjoy.

Important speech on Iraq was given by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Asked about the current situation in Iraq, he said "If we were asked to use just one word to describe the situation in Iraq today, I would choose the word HOPE." He went on to state that “There is new hope that the people and government of Iraq are overcoming daunting challenges and working together to rebuild their country after years of war, neglect and dictatorship.” I’ll give credit where credit is due. The U.N. Chief did not blame the turmoil in Iraq on the war alone. He fairly noted that the situation in Iraq is the result of war, but also of neglect and dictatorship.

Posted at 11:31am on May 28, 2008 A Shout Out To Vaclav Klaus and a Challenge to Al Gore and John McCain
By swamp_yankee
Little has been written about Vaclav Klaus, the Czech President who has been a bulldog defending free markets and personal liberties and challenging the global warming crowd. This week he repeated his offer to debate Al Gore. As usual, he is being ignored. It’s refreshing to see a president of European country have the guts to take on any and all so called global warming experts. It’s remarkable that he never gets any press or credit.

By swamp_yankee
Personally, I’m tired of all the dumping on Republicans in office. They’re politicians. They work with lobbyists, they raise money from interest groups, they serve those that got them elected and they engage in compromise. That’s what politicians do.
Do they get stale? Of, course. That’s why the real challenge for the GOP is about branding and marketing. We do need new leadership because we need to reformulate the brand. On a base level, campaigns are not about grandiose principles or ideological battles. They are as primitive and superficial as the cola wars. During elections, Democrats versus Republicans is not that much more complicated than Pepsi versus Coke or McDonalds versus Burger King.

By swamp_yankee
I recently wrote some supportive, but less then enthusiastic things about the Tory resurgence. I thought it was a UK phenomenon. I didn’t think it trickled down to London. Well, it did and I love this new Tory mayor already. Why? Because he had some great political statement? No, because he ended his celebration with this:
"Let's get cracking tomorrow. Let's have a drink tonight."
Gotta love the Brits

By swamp_yankee
Who punches a girl in a wheelchair? Anti-war liberal activists. That's who. Don't agree with the policies of George W. Bush? Scream obscenities at his daughter and his wife and punch a twenty-two year old wheelchair bound woman in the head. So much for tolerance and free speech.
You stay classy anti-war liberal activists and Kos Kid Kool Aid drinkers!
Now I have to find another hippie to punch.

By swamp_yankee
The annual Canadian Seal Hunt is in progress and a little noticed but interesting episode occurred of the coast of Canada. The Farley Mowat, a Dutch registered ship captained and manned by a crew of eco-geeks and animal rights activists, was seized by the Canadian Coast Guard. Of course, the eco-geeks and animal rights activists are calling the actions of the Canadian government an “act of war”.

In the minds of many Mexican nationals, the reconquista is very real. I’m not an anti-corporate demagogue, but it’s precisely this type of sell-out that gives all “big corporations” a bad name:

This is blatant anti-American pandering that should not be funded with the hard earned money of patriotic Americans. I won't be drinking Absolut any time soon.

By swamp_yankee
Some endorsements aren't worth recognizing:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/04/mccain-is-thril.html
So our esteemed nominee was “honored” by the endorsement of MTV bad girl Heidi Montag and he never misses an episode ‘The Hills’, an MTV reality show targeting pre-pubescent girls and perverted old men.
C'mon Senator. Okay, you’re a hip, fun guy. Your down with the MTV generation, but fawning over self-absorbed, uber-plastic, Hollywood wannabe starlets is a little beneath you, don’t you think? It's a little reminiscent of Bill Clinton circa 1992.

Posted at 2:47pm on Mar. 28, 2008 Because Fridays Need A Frivolous Open Thread; Newsweek, "624787", and Heath Shuler
By swamp_yankee
Because I'm at work in Boston and have no one to talk to about politics unless I want to be ostracized or get fired and there is no open thread for random musings. Some random thoughts:
>>> A WOW cover. My jaw dropped a little when I saw the new Newsweek cover. It’s entitled "When Barry Became Barack" and shows an old school photo of Barry with an afro and a butterfly collar transposed over a white background. It’s striking. I doubt such a cover would run without Hillary in the race. Something tells me the old school Dems associated with Newsweek (Clift, Klein, etc...) are still in the bag for Hillary. Would this run in October in a stright Obama versus McCain race. I think not. Look for it at newsstands.
