And did not do well on the deal. I bought it a year ago (for cash - at least I wasn't stuck in a negative equity scenario). It worked well for the first few months, but then it was going into the shop for this or that every six weeks. We hoped the worst was over, but this week the transmission started acting up, and we realized it was time to run away screaming.

So now I have to find a replacement. I can borrow my wife's car for a while, but as a long term solution that is not practical. And replacing it is going to cost.

Posted at 11:46am on Jan. 12, 2008 Attention: The Administration just blundered in a catastrophic fashion

By Gildas

The news broke late last night that the Department of Justice has filed an amicus brief in the DC Gun Ban case, asking that the Supreme Court overturn the Court of Appeals decision striking down the DC Gun Ban. This is a move of breathtaking idiocy that may have already cost us the election.

Information here - note the number of comments in such a short period of time

To be sure, the DOJ argues that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right, but it argues that the Appeals Court erred in overturning the law because it applied the strict scrutiny standard instead of some balancing test between the government's interests and the right to keep and bear arms. In the view of the DOJ, 'shall not be infringed' might not necessarily mean you cannot ban a whole class of weapon.

By Gildas

This crime being the gruesome gang rape and murder of Jennifer Ertman, 14 and Michelle Pena, 16 in Houston in 1993. That is the original crime that gave rise to the case of Medellin vs. Texas which the Supreme Court granted certiorari for on Monday.

The details of that crime are here. I won't excerpt from it, because what was done to those young women was utterly horrific. But I urge those of you who do have the stomach for such things to read it.

By Gildas

Today's ruling by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, that the Washington DC handgun ban (and its associated restrictions on storing a usable weapon on private property in the District) is unconstitutional poses a very simple question for the Republican contenders.

The big three all have, to put it bluntly, woeful track records on this issue. All three have basically punted on it by saying (as with other social issues) that they would appoint conservative judges to the Courts. Well now we have a ruling from exactly that sort of judge on the 2nd Amendment.

Posted at 2:56am on Dec. 5, 2006 With nary a whisper, a new Property Rights case moves to SCOTUS

By Gildas

The Supreme Court granted Cert on a number of cases last week. Everyone heard about the 'Bong hits 4 Jesus' one, and had a good chortle about it, and everyone heard about the Faith-based initiative one too. But it is the third case of which I speak
