By LibertarianHawk
The results of Tuesday's races virtually guarantee that the Democratic primary will:
1) Go on through at least June
2) Get bloodier than it has thus far
It ought to make for some good entertainment. And, for us lowly Republicans, it might well be the only political drama we'll have to enjoy this cycle. In all likelihood, Barack Obama is still going to end up with the Democratic nomination...but only after getting roughed up a bit by the Clinton machine -- costing him money, time, and mojo.

By LibertarianHawk
There's a climactic scene in the great film "The Hunt for Red October" featuring a young, determined Soviet submarine captain sent by his government to sink a ship captained by his mentor. He's pulled out all the stops and is so singularly focused on sinking that submarine that he becomes dangerously reckless.
Finally, a torpedo he's launched at his target gets confused by a clever, if somewhat implausible, game of deep-sea chicken played by the Red October and an American sub. As it turns out, his effort not only fails, but it backfires.

Posted at 3:59pm on Dec. 31, 2007 How Would MittCare Impact the General Election?
By LibertarianHawk
I'm no fan of anything compulsory like this -- at least insofar as compliance doesn't impact anybody else. I opposed his plan and still can't figure out what the Heritage Foundation was thinking by giving it an endorsement.
And it would also seem to be having its share of problems.
But elections are about politics and not about policy. And, with Iraq falling down the list of key issues in the race, it's probably a good time to speculate how well his record on healthcare would play to a national audience.

Posted at 2:44am on Nov. 12, 2007 Hollywood money ending up in the hands of the few
By LibertarianHawk
How many times have you been lectured in your life -- in a political context (ie, basically, the need for socialism) -- about how the fatcats are greedy, gobble up all the money, leave scraps for average joes, etc.?
I've heard it dozens of times myself. Most leftists claim to believe that, generally, wealth ought to be distributed on an "equitable" basis -- or, basically, that the actual value of somebody's labor ought be ignored in favor of determining worth by way of, say, a needs assessment. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need...or something like that.

Posted at 12:33pm on Oct. 18, 2007 Mark Penn thinks Hillary will win 25% of Republican women
By LibertarianHawk
Hillary's pollster extraordinaire Mark Penn got the Drudge headline today by proclaiming that his polling data predicts that Hillary will win 1 out of 4 Republican women.
His reasoning is that they'll be taken by the prospect of electing the first female president.
If this truly comes to be -- and I doubt that it will -- then this election is all but over. Yes, women are a smaller portion of the Republican electorate than men are. But, obviously, if the Republicans lose one in four of that large a portion of their voters, then it would be nearly impossible to make it up elsewhere.

Posted at 8:40pm on Oct. 11, 2007 Ann Coulter needs to retire to the Bahamas.
By LibertarianHawk
With all the phony kerfuffle over the phony Limbaugh comments last week, here comes Ann Coulter with guns-a-blazing -- basically sounding the al-Qaida line against infidels...only this time about Jews and Christianity.
I'm sure a lot of you are fans of her. But she basically needs to shut up and go away forever. There is simply no way to look at her comments and come away thinking that she's:

Posted at 10:58am on Sep. 26, 2007 The Telegraph story on Celinda Lake's poll
By LibertarianHawk
There have been two headline-making political polls to come out in the past week.
The first was done by famed Democratic pollstress Celinda Lake which showed that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were potential drags on the Democratic Party's overall fortunes in 2008 in a head-to-head matchup with Rudy Giuliani.
The second was a poll by Gallup which reinforced the notion that the mood from 2006 -- that Americans have soured on "Republicans" enough to make them actually trust the Democrats more...not only on Dem issues like healthcare and education, but on national security and economic growth -- was not only still with us but perhaps even deepening.

Posted at 9:44am on Sep. 19, 2007 And therein lies the difference between Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama
By LibertarianHawk
Forget the "acting like he's white" comment that is sure to dominate the coverage of this Jackson/Obama kerfuffle. It's beside the point -- it's just more of the soundbite hyperbole that Jackson's become known for.
The story here is that Rev. Jackson thinks Obama has not been vocal enough about the Jena story (which, frankly, I've never even heard about until I read this story). And, moreover, Jackson blames Obama's deficit to Hillary Clinton on this and things like it.

Posted at 10:07am on Sep. 10, 2007 Rabbi Michael Lerner Lays It All Out
By LibertarianHawk
Promoted from blogs, with a disagreement: contra LibertarianHawk, the transcript is endlessly fascinating. The level of activity that the progressive movement apparently needs to generate in order to sustain the supposed will of the people is positively Herculean. Why, looking at it you'd almost think that these guys are pretty much backed by their tuchises. Tuchisi? - Moe Lane
I don't know how much dialogue this leaked conference call of "peace activists" will generate. Frankly, most of it is sleep-inducing and shows more than anything else that the antiwar movement is basically out of gas and that they know it.
However, there is one interesting, substantive passage. It comes from the man who leaked the transcript of the call, the venerable far left Rabbi (and 9/11 Truther) Michael Lerner.

Posted at 11:49am on Aug. 22, 2007 Dems Might Not Be Able To Count on California's 55 Electoral Votes
By LibertarianHawk
Anybody who follows politics is familiar with at least two characteristics of California politics:
1) The state which gave us Ronald Reagan has been trending steadily leftward for quite some time, to the point where it is no longer competitive in presidential elections.
2) It has a (sometimes amusingly) hyperactive ballot-initiative process
Those two forces may be about to collide in such a way that could prove disastrous for Democratic hopes in capturing the White House in 2008 -- particularly in an environment where the Red/Blue map nationally is so closely divided.
