By RedLeader

John Dickerson dissects the latest Clinton ad over at Slate but, of course, misses the real point entirely.

If you vote for Barack Obama, your children are going to die in their beds. This is the message of the latest Clinton television ad running in Texas. The spot starts with a moonlit shot of a blond toddler in the warm tangle of her sheets and then cuts to a close-up of an infant also in deep REM sleep. For the next 15 seconds, the images shift from one cherubic sleeping face to another. You'd think you were watching a Baby Ambien ad if the narrator weren't giving you nightmares: "It's 3 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep. But there's a phone in the White House, and it's ringing. Something's happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether it's someone who already knows the world's leaders, knows the military—someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world." At this point, we see our first adult, a concerned mother, opening the door and peering into her children's bedroom. "It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep," the narrator repeats. "Who do you want answering the phone?"

Posted at 11:31am on Mar. 1, 2008 A salient message for conservatives from Joe Sobran

By RedLeader

I came across this article from March 2, 2000 written by Joe Sobran regarding the upcoming Presidential race and thought his message might ring true with a few conservatives even today.

As a rule, conservatives support the presidential candidate of the Republican Party, and more often than not with reluctance. To vote for a smaller, purer conservative party, the saying goes, is to “waste” one’s vote and help ensure a Democratic president. Safer to settle for an imperfect Republican president, a Nixon, a Ford, a Bush, a Dole, who at least has a chance of winning.

Posted at 9:52am on Mar. 1, 2008 An inability to comprehend

By RedLeader

It is worthy of reflection, I would think, as we proceed toward one of the most contentious Presidential elections that we have seen for many years, what sort of future our country is both headed toward and what future it should be headed toward. The debates of the coming months will revolve around many policy issues of great effect on the people of the United States: health care, immigration, abortion, national security, federal spending and more. On one side, we shall see an advocate for enormous expansion of federal intervention in these areas, and for greater spending (including the “revenue generation” necessary to support such intervention) in order to realize the goal of more centralized government. On the other side, we will likely see a candidate whose heels are firmly planted in the soil, screaming for a halt of our current path toward (increased) statism.

Posted at 11:18am on Feb. 17, 2008 The Obama phenomenon

By RedLeader

Let me begin this post with a caveat: Obama is a liberal's liberal whom I could never and will never support. His views are the ideological opposite of my own and will be harmful to America. That being said, he will also be the next President of the United States. Now let me explain why.

Contrary to what those of us who closely follow politics tend to believe, as we pore over polling data, candidate positions, and analyze every word uttered by the front runners looking for inconsistencies or contradictions; the majority of the electorate does not sit down with a chart comparing two candidate's positions on issues and choose the one that they feel will be best for the country. Rather, the majority of voters, especially in a general election involving the President where many people who don't usually vote show up at the polls, simply listen to what the candidates say and vote for the guy that sounds like he'll do a good job.

Posted at 10:18am on Feb. 16, 2008 The influence of talk radio

By RedLeader

Has the influence of political talk radio declined, as many are claiming as a result of McCain snagging the Republican nomination in spite of virulent opposition by "conservative" talk mega-mouthpieces such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity? While these bastions of conservative dialog seek to defend their influence by pointing to exit polls, claiming that their listeners aren't "lemmings" or using any other defense that comes to mind for their lack of ability to influence the primaries, it is worthwhile to look at what exactly happened.

Posted at 2:49pm on Dec. 15, 2007 A Freight Train Toward Socialism

By RedLeader

It does not take an astute observer of national political trends to come to the conclusion that the United States stands perched on a ledge from which its future will be decided. Long a country grounded in its republican form of government, an adherence to certain principles of liberty and individual character, the US has been on a progressive march toward something, well, different. To label the destiny to which the US seems to be careening as a form of socialism is sure to bring derision upon any who dares to make such a characterization, but it surely is worth making an assessment of the decisions that our society is faced with in order to determine the correct course to take.

Posted at 10:41am on Aug. 26, 2007 Steyn gives a history lesson

By RedLeader

Mark Steyn is easily one of my favorite authors for his ability to articulate what we all know to be true but struggle to find the words to say. Today, in the Orange County Register Steyn hits another one out of the park. Support of the war really breaks down into two points: 1) should we have gone into Iraq in the first place; 2) should we stay? I'll deal with the first point at some other time, but Steyn details why we have to stay.

Posted at 8:16pm on Apr. 11, 2007 Radio Host Fired for "Nappy Headed Ho" Comments

By RedLeader

No, it wasn't Don Imus as you might expect, but rather Stroudsburg, PA radio host Gary Smith. Apparently this intellectual giant thought that Imus' comments were so funny that he would capitalize on them.

Gary Smith told WSBG-FM listeners to call and say "I'm a nappy-headed ho" for Tuesday's "Phrase that Pays" contest, said Rick Musselman, executive vice president of station owner Nassau Broadcasting Partners L.P.

Posted at 7:52am on Apr. 10, 2007 No one to vote for?

By RedLeader

Jonah Goldberg makes an impassioned and reasonable plea this morning to conservatives to not rule out McCain just yet. His side-by-side comparison to Guiliani is appropriate, and his analysis is probably correct. Conservative's willingness to rule out voting for McCain under any circumstance while still taking Guiliani under consideration is flabbergasting.
