By blackrepublican

Apparently, there is a group of very angry Hillary supporters that have formed. They refer to themselves as PUMA (used to mean Party Unity, My A** now refers to People United Means Action). These folks have formed their own 527 and created some very sharp anti-Obama ads that they are now raising money to air in swing states. Take a look.

Posted at 3:45pm on Apr. 20, 2008 The New Politics of Hope (part 1)

By blackrepublican

I've been a little bewildered by what this phrase means but lately it's been coming into view for me. Apparently, the new politics of hope includes:

1. Claiming to bring Republicans and Democrats together while comparing a Republican senator to a terrorist you used to hang out with

2. Showing political "courage" by opposing the Iraq War in a Democratic senatorial primary then using that singular act of courage as the sole rationale for superior foreign policy judgment

Posted at 3:25pm on Mar. 16, 2008 Judgment, experience, and patriotism -- How to beat Obama

By blackrepublican

To me, these are the three pillars of the argument against Obama. Hillary has tried and failed to make the argument against Obama based on experience primarily because her resume is frighteningly thin. However, McCain won't have this issue and his surrogates should focus on hitting this theme. If we restrict ourselves to this theme though, we will still lose the election, in my opinion because it becomes a framing of the old versus new.

Posted at 6:28pm on Dec. 28, 2007 Most Ironic Campaign Theme Songs

By blackrepublican

I'm in sort of a punchy mood after reading the umpteenth "my candidate is better/smarter/holier/tougher than your candidate" blog. So I propose a competition for the most ironic campaign theme songs (or song titles) for each candidate. I'll start...

Rudy - "Secret Lover" by Isley Brothers
Romney - "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by Roberta Flack
Fred - "Fire in the Belly" by Van Morrison

Posted at 7:25am on Dec. 15, 2007 Life comes full circle

By blackrepublican

I posted a diary recently that touched on my indecision in the Republican primary. I'm still depressed with the choices but I've decided that it's either McCain or Fred for me. Since I live in MA, I'll see who is still standing by the time of our primary and vote accordingly.

When the primary first started, I leaned towards McCain but became disenchanted and then undecided. I also was curious about Thompson when he first entered the race but then questioned his stamina/motivation and so again was undecided.

Posted at 5:07pm on Dec. 9, 2007 Huckabee's rise - the Tavis factor

By blackrepublican

I'm going to propose a theory here that I'm sure those with better data and contacts than I have will be able to confirm or refute. However, when I think about Huckabee's recent surge in the polls; I can't help but think about the Tavis Smiley debate. Why? Because all four leading presidential hopefuls effectively ceded the stage to the "unknowns;" and in this forum, Huckabee shined.

Huckabee had the best soundbites, presence, and resonance with the audience and made his other colleagues at the debate look uncomfortable by contrast. I think the combination of no frontrunners, national exposure, and efficiently used airtime spotligted Huckabee's communication skills and increased his name ID, which he has capitalized on since. In other words, his debate performance at the PBS forum served as a bridge from his Ames Straw Poll surprise showing to his most recent gain in momentum. It seems like Huckabee has implicitly tied his appearance into his overall narrative as well (http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/269696.aspx).

Posted at 12:34am on Nov. 8, 2007 Calling all young black Republicans

By blackrepublican

I'm involved in an initiative to network together 5,000 black Republicans between the ages of 16-35. We are currently revising the conservative urban agenda (please see prior blog entry) and would love to identify other young black Republicans to provide input as well as meet with us each week via teleconference to discuss politics and policy. If you are a young black Republican or know someone who is, please contact me. I hope to share more about our efforts in the coming months.

By blackrepublican

Note: I posted this as a comment and wanted to expand on it a little bit.

- Charter schools and school vouchers
- Faith-based initiatives to support inner city churches providing social services (should be accompanied by the elimination of government programs as these church/nonprofit initiatives bear fruit and become completely self-sufficient)
- Financial literacy courses required prior to graduating high school or college and grants steered towards successful financial literacy programs
