(This is amateur, untrained polisci, so take with salt. Still, it's how I see the state of the party.)
I. Where We Are
Before the debates, there were some posts about Huckabee's appeal to culture-firsters, prompted by Mark Steyn's article on the subject. But it seems to me that each of the remaining candidates -- besides Hunter, and perhaps that's why he's got no support -- nicely encapsulates one of the reasons people vote Republican. Unsurprisingly, they're all within a few points of each other in the standings, and only one has no shot of the actual nomination.

Posted at 12:36pm on Jan. 4, 2008 How many points did the dirty trick cost Fred?

Clearly the Politico story was meant to create the scenario it fabricated, by forcing a fourth-place finish for Fred and knocking him out of the race.
He beat out McCain nevertheless, was helped for later races by Romney's big loss, and is clearly staying in, but with as much airplay as the election-eve rumor got, it's impossible not to wonder how many points it cost him -- particularly in a low-turnout election like these caucuses. One? Five? More? And who, if anyone picked these up?

(Cross posted, with some small changes, from an Open Blog entry at Ace of Spades HQ)
(Bottom line: if you like the guy, donate this Wednesday.)
A recent straw poll among Redstate readers/commenters had Fred far, far ahead of the field, both in first-place preference and overall. I think this is pretty representative of online activist opinion -- unsurprisingly, since his views are so superior a fit for primary voters that it's not funny. The odd thing, though, is that pro-Fred sentiment is oddly muted around the blogosphere, even at Redstate itself.
