By Stilichio

The first paragraph in this Washington Post story on the failure of "Immigration reform" is a keeper:

"WASHINGTON -- When President Bush's "grand bargain" on immigration fell apart, Jeff Sessions, the Republican senator from Alabama who is named after a pair of famous Confederates, was very proud."

Thompson, preparing to formally announce his candidacy, leads the pack in the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey with 27% support. That gives him a four-point advantage over former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani who is currently preferred by 23% of Likely Primary Voters. A week ago, it was Thompson 28% and Giuliani 27%. Two weeks ago, they were tied at 24%. Prior to that time, Giuliani had been on top in every weekly Rasmussen Reports poll for five months

Posted at 11:02am on Jun. 14, 2007 Immigration debate - Swedish style (Immigration as the end of democracy)

By Stilichio

One of the under-appreciated effects of mass immigration is the re-introduction of Eastern-European doctrines with regards to democracy and freedom of speech. Sweden, of course, is leading the pack:

From The Local:

A local politician in southern Sweden has been fined 18,000 kronor for writing a motion claiming that 95 percent of all heroin brought in to Sweden comes via Kosovo.

Posted at 9:07am on Jun. 14, 2007 The shocking real reason for the Amnesty push?

By Stilichio

Via Rich Lowry at NRO:

Actually, Chertoff said something even more interesting yesterday. A yet unanswered question is “Why is the open borders lobby pushing for amnesty?” After all, they had it pretty good with no federal enforcement.

Chertoff and Kyl both seem to have answered that question recently, Kyl in his Wall Street Journal interview and Chertoff on Fox News yesterday: because businesses are starting to worry about efforts to enforce immigration laws at the local level. One state in the vanguard of that effort is Kyl’s (and McCain’s) home state of Arizona, where the legislature has passed numerous laws (usually vetoed) on the issue, and where the public voted for Prop 200 back in 2004.

GOP Senate Leaders McConnell & Lott on verge of deal to bring amnesty back up for vote

Friends,

Pres. Bush's meeting with Republican Senators at noon appears to be providing just the extra push that pro-amnesty leaders have wanted.

The Senate's top two Republican leaders -- McConnell (R-Ky.) and Lott (R-Miss.) -- are using this opportunity to pull 15 Republicans (of the 38 who voted against amnesty last week) back to Pres. Bush's side.
