One has to wonder what a group for public school teachers has to do with abortion. All I can come up with is that the National Education Association assumes teachers' lives can be made easier by simply eliminating the students, especially the more difficult ones. It's bad enough that the NEA actually takes a position on the matter. But the NEA's latest action is beyond the pale.

I first caught this in an article on a pro-life website.

A new poll by the Pew Research Center shows that 33 percent (and I suppose as many as 39 percent if you count those who don't know) of ALL registered voters would consider a socially conservative third party candidate if the 2008 race ends up being between Rudy and Hillary. Only 61 percent would not consider it.

I have to wonder if there was something wrong. The wording of the question seemed clear:

An article by Jeffrey Toobin in the New Yorker describes a discussion he had with Justice Kennedy. Given what I've heard from his recent book, I know not to take his own accounts too seriously, but this was an actual conversation. Some of the things Kennedy said really frightened me, especially on page 5:

Recently at the National Governors Association Meeting, Sandra Day O'Connor went on her typical mantra about the need for "judicial independence."

She implicitly refers to, I think, the one or two members of Congress who proposed legislation two or three years ago reflecting the sentiment that international law has no place in judicial rulings. She went on about the evils of state ballot initiatives. Heaven forbid the people even try to have a say in their state policies.
