Cover Letter
First let me say I like your cover letter better than the NRSC's. You kept your appeal for funds until the end and didn't try fear-mongering as the NRSC did, at least not until the post script. From a tactics standpoint I think you did a better job on the whole because may people only read the opening and closing of a long letter. Your closing has both your plea for money and a well thought out motivational paragraph designed to strike at the nerve-center of a conservative. It did with me but I'm still not sending you money because the current republicans are not living up to the constitutional conservative ideals of Regan and Goldwater.

Question 19. Do you believe we must unite our Republican party around a conservative gameplan? Yes. But with a caveat. I do not want to unite with moderates or left-leaning Republicans who will nibble and gnaw at constitutional and conservative ideals. I do not want a watered down description of what conservative is for the sake of unity or the ‘Big Tent’. I want those people who think and believe the majority of what I do. The leftists or those who are willing to compromise their personal values (this is my opinion so by definition are my personal values) need not apply. Go somewhere else. You may court my vote but do not claim to be like me. I’ll respect that, as I said. Likewise, do not reach across the isle and compromise what I elected you (presuming I did vote for you in the first place) to represent. If you do you find yourself one vote shorter come re-election time. I am unbending on this one. Do not test me. Let me say it again, do not compromise the conservative principals you were elected on by doing the same with those who oppose the constitutional conservative ideals.

Question 14. Do you support a Constitutional Amendment to protect traditional marriage between a man and a woman? No. This is not the job of the Federal Government. This is a state by state issue. As such it should be dealt with there. I refer you back to Amendment X of the Constitution and ask you to get back to the duties of securing and defending our nation. Do I believe, personally, that marriage should be between one man and one woman? Yes, it’s biblical. I’m a Christian. So, God has given me what defines marriage. As such, for me, I will vote as such if given the opportunity. What that means is if politicians begin campaigning on such an issue or it comes up I will side, on this issue, with the people who believe as I do. However, God gave us free will to accept or reject His word. Who am I to deny that freedom for another? If I do, I’m placing myself above God and I cannot do that.

Question 8. Should the Republicans in the Senate stop the Democrat Majority from raising taxes? Yes. I will point you back to paragraph five above of my opening foreword.
Question 9. Should President Bush’s tax cuts be made permanent? Yes. A simple ‘yes’ will do here.
Question 10, Do you support serious “earmark reform” to prevent members of Congress from wasting your tax dollars on unnecessary pork-barrel projects? Yes. I’m not sure why you feel earmark reform deserves to be in quotations but so be it. Before you individually try to claim the moral high ground you need to ask yourself if you’ve every supported an earmark for a pet project before? For that matter if you’ve ever put an earmark in a bill that had nothing to do with that bill to get it passed I feel it’s nearly the same. I think all amendments to a bill should be relevant (and I mean REALLY relevant and not just semantically so) to the actual purpose of the bill. If it’s not or it doesn’t have to do with, ‘…form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing sof Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity…’ (no really because that’s all you guys are supposed to be worried about… really) then it shouldn’t be done by Federal Government, and much of the above is interpreted FAR to liberally, in my opinion. I refer you to the tenth amendment of the Constitution where in, ‘The power not relegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor projibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people’. I have a pocket edition of the constitution provided free by The Heritage Foundation (though I am not a member) if you’d like to borrow it or you can get your own free from www.heritage.org.

Question 4. Should we stop the Democrats from repealing key provisions of the USA Patriot Act that allow intelligence agencies to share information? Yes. This again falls into the ‘Duh’ category and is part of government’s primary responsibility to protect it’s citizenry. I understand the so-called argument about invasion of privacy etc but if you’re having congress with known terrorists either knowingly or unknowingly you should be monitored. If I were talking with known terrorists and I knew it then I’m an idiot and should be monitored. If I didn’t know they were suspected I’d want to know that so I could stop having anything to do with them. Simple.

Dear Senator McConnell et al Americans,
If you truly do not care what I think and only want my money (potentially true based no the five paragraphs in the letter devoted to telling me how much it cost and asking me for money), then this will end up in the trash. However, you sent me a four page letter accompanying a twenty yes/no and two essay question survey. I took the time to read all eight pages and fill them out honestly so lets see if you, sir, are willing to spend some time reading the response you solicited from me (consider this a test) and purportedly hold in necessary regard because my opinions, ‘…will represent those of all Republican voters living in your Voting Precinct…’ to quote the letter. Thus, I will take your letter at it’s word and spend additional time giving you as much of my opinion as necessary so you will understand exactly what my opinion is, and by definition the opinions of those you’ve chosen me to represent. As such I will elaborate on each question you gave me a yes/no/undecided choice, which is totally unacceptable with which to build a party consensus, agenda, or direction. It is self-serving and worded to obtain one answer; the one you want.

Back in early April of this year (2008) I received an eight page letter and survey with the letter head of Senator Mitch McConnell and his signature (machine reproduced of course) at the end. It was sent by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. It was also a very poor attempt to instill fear in me of a liberal controlled political structure and what that would do to me. Interspersed in the four pages of the letter and four pages of the survey were eight appeals for me to send them money. I took offense at being asked for money to stop the liberal agenda by Republicans who have forgotten (or chosen to ignore) what the definition of 'Conservative' is. It's about time someone finally identified the only REAL conservative in the 2008 race. Rush just asked a rhetorical question concerning identifying the only real conservative in the race and said it was Thompson. Perhaps we'll see more of this now. If you haven't thought about Fred much yet check out his 17 minute youtube video. It explains pretty much everything he believes and what he thinks we should do about it.

Let me posit a scenario and see where this takes us.
Fred Thompson formally enters the race on July 4th and the majority of traction swings his way as he is the 'most' conservative of the viable candidates fielded by the Republicans.
Hillary, Obama, et al spin into a frenzy of self-imolation trying to make the other ones look bad enough to make them look good so they have a shot at beating the Thompson/[fill-in-the-blank-but-I-like-Gulliani] ticket.
