Posted at 7:55pm on Jun. 20, 2007 Kidnapped Soldier's Wife Faces Deportation; Kerry Seeks Amnesty

By ElmarBrok

Here is an interesting angle on the current immigration debate.

First, background:

Army Spec. Alex Jimenez has been been missing since 12 May in Iraq when his unit was attacked with insurgents has been trying to give legal green card status to his wife, a Dominican Republic native.

His wife, Yedarlin Hiraldo, arrived in the United States in 2001 illegally (the article does not mention how she entered the United States). Hiraldo married Jimenez in 2004 at a New York Army Base.

Posted at 12:03pm on Jun. 19, 2007 Where are Sharpton and Jackson NOW?

By ElmarBrok

I came across this very strongly worded column in the sports section of the Florida Today newspaper.

You may remember when the Duke lacrosse case came to the national limelight. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were very vocal with their opinions. Now, after the DA was disbarred, the accuser found to be psychotic, the coach fired, and the accused athletes lost a year of their lives and have now moved on to other institutions, we have gotten nothing but silence from the Jackson and Sharpton talking heads.

Posted at 12:34pm on Jun. 16, 2007 We all better get used to saying 'Gracias'...

By ElmarBrok

...if Bush has his way.

A recent glance through this week's speeches by President George W. Bush made realize that he's sharpening up the rhetoric in favor of his amnesty bill -- this time in Spanish.

"Gracias. Siéntese, por favor."

"Y también, Congresswoman Grace Napolitano y Luis Fortuno."

"Y también, que Dios les bendiga."

He said this while pandering at the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast on Friday of this past week. Obviously, this is not the first time that he has held in contempt linguistic heritage. He did so in his gubernatorial campaigns as well as both of his presidential campaigns, and continues to do so.

Posted at 5:07pm on Jun. 8, 2007 "No passports required to enter the United States!" says the State Department

By ElmarBrok

... that's at least if your traveling by air. According to the Associated Press, the State Department and hesitantly the Department of Homeland Security (the enforcer of this travel requirement) decided to waive passport requirements for travelers arriving by air for the summer as the State Department tries to fix its massive backlog of passport applications. This only applies to travelers flying to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Posted at 10:05am on Jun. 7, 2007 Fred Thompson's corporate lobbying past

By ElmarBrok

Rudy did it too. And so did Fred Thompson. According to this article in today's USA Today, Fred Thompson has had a long history of being a political lobbyist. The article has an anti-Thompson bias, but that's commonplace among the MSM.

Before I go further, I would like to say that lobbying is not as seedy as the MSM (and the article above) tends to paint. It has been an important part of our democracy since the late 1700s.

Posted at 9:27pm on May 30, 2007 Malaysia -- People Can't Practice Their Faith in this Country Where Religion is Constitutionally Protected

By ElmarBrok

This is the sad story of a Muslim woman in Malaysia trying to convert to Christianity, but denied by the country's Sharia court (which is higher than the country's secular civil High Court).

According to this article in the BBC:

"...Malaysia's constitution guarantees freedom of worship but says all ethnic Malays are Muslim. Under Sharia law, Muslims are not allowed to convert. ..."
