Wow. This thing did NOT go in the way I expected it to. I was surprised by John McCain's win, to be sure. And I thought Czar Hillary would have put Obama away a long time ago. This infighting on the Dem side leads me to believe the GOP may very well retain the White House. McCain is centrist enough to easily defeat Hillary. Obama may be another story, but it certainly looks good for the prospects of a McCain presidency. But I have read commentary on this before regarding why folks DIDN'T want McCain as the nominee. The economy is going into a tailspin, and McCain is the worst guy to ask on how to fix it. If he were to win, and it gets worse, there will be a GOP backlash and I am afraid there will be a complete sweep of blue into Congress and in 2012, we have a socialist state perhaps for a generation. The populist themes that are being played to perfection completely symbolize where the collective minds of the electorate are.

Posted at 1:56am on Feb. 7, 2008 What really throws me about this primary.....

By IL-Tony

I can understand WHY the folks on the far right don't like John McCain, and the fact he is winning the Republican nomination. What I can't understand is how electing Mitt Romney wouldn't be short-sighted. Does anyone think that ANY moderates, independents or Democrats would vote for Romney in the general election? He'd win Utah, and maybe Michigan. And that's just against Clinton. I don't see how it would be even close against either Democrat nominee. I'm not here to slam Romney, or his supporters. I just don't see how the guy can win....and isn't that the purpose of the general??

Posted at 12:02am on Feb. 2, 2008 Times look tough......but are you conservatives listening?

By IL-Tony

With all the vitriol that has been directed at John McCain, I wonder if the folks here would feel better if MY pick (Mike Huckabee) were the nominee instead......nevermind....probably not.

Huckabee's stay in the race is good for 2 things and 2 things only. The first is that he is effectively splitting the conservative vote against Mitt Romney. My theory is that they'll take the eco-flip-flopper over the social flip-flopper. Yes, I realize that Mitt's flop landed him on the right side, but people don't trust that timely conversion. Regardless, I think Huckabee is keeping Romney from winning.

Posted at 11:36pm on Jan. 20, 2008 Time for some folks to drop out soon......

By IL-Tony

Even though I am a Huckabee supporter, I think he needs to seriously look at bowing out. He needed to win SC (same as Fred) and since he didn't, I just dont see him winning any "Super Duper alley-ooper" Tuesday states. If anything, I think it really should come down to McCain vs. Romney. I know Senator McCain certainly isn't the popular flavor of the month here at RedState, but I do believe if it comes down to him vs. Romney, he is probably the better choice. I should be clear, he is not the REPUBLICAN choice, but McCain really is the only one who could possibly steal a blue state (call it "purple") and I don't see how Romney can win any blue state at all, and may even in fact lose a close state like Ohio and Florida to Clinton. The folks here in my home state, based on editorials and local coverage, believe Romney isn't an authentic candidate (They went as far as to call him the "empty suit"). I don't like Romney simply because I haven't been able to connect with the guy.

By IL-Tony

Just kidding.......

Tax his land,
Tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirts,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.

Tax his booze,
Tax his beers,
If he cries,
Tax his tears.

Posted at 1:39am on Jan. 14, 2008 Question for the folks here at RedState

By IL-Tony

I've read enough articles and blogs here to know that Mike Huckabee is NOT a popular choice for POTUS. But assuming he won the nomination, is there anyone he could pick as a running mate to make others feel better about him as the nominee? What about McCain, Rudy, Mitt, and Fred (RP doesnt count)
I think most of the time, a nominee will pick a Veep based on a perceived lack of strength (for instance, a southern conservative with foreign policy weakness could look for a northern general?)

Posted at 12:04am on Jan. 11, 2008 Welcome to the fight, Fred!

By IL-Tony

Just got done watching the debate. Tonight's debate was probably the best one yet. I make no excuses, but I chose to support Mike Huckabee because Fred Thompson (the guy I was hoping for) seemed so disinterested. I was called stupid, liberal, etc for that support. Well the guy I wanted to win didnt want to win himself. Maybe he's the big guy you have to hit a few times to make him mad. Or maybe his finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire made him angry. Whatever it was, Fred came out swinging tonight and put on one hell of a debate. I don't know if this makes him a player, but if he's can win SC and stays in until February 5th when my state votes, I may have to change my vote. Good job, Fred! But I have to ask.....where the heck has this Fred been the whole time???

Posted at 10:00pm on Jan. 4, 2008 WHOO HOO! Let's go, New Hampshire!!

By IL-Tony

What a great night last night. It's good to back the winner (and I am not even an evangelical!). So my plea goes out to New Hampshire......ANYBODY BUT ROMNEY! That's it. I don't mind a John McCain win, or even another Huck win (no freakin chance there), but that robotic, plastic, can't connect with voters bazillionaire Romney needs to GO. I am still convinced that if Romney were to debate John Kerry, our heads would explode from all the double talk. I am still not even convinced that Huckabee would make a great president, but I am completely convinced that Romney wouldn't.

Posted at 5:01pm on Dec. 31, 2007 My 2008 predictions

By IL-Tony

*I posted this as a comment on someone else's blog, but I wanted to save them and see how good a prognosticator I am (or not) ;)

Iowa goes comfortably to Huckabee, Romney makes a big speech and goes negative in panic mode against McCain, who trounces him in New Hampshire (see ya, Mitt - I surely hope so on this one!!)

Romney endorses Rudy and leaves some parting shots at McCain.

South Carolina tips the thing upside down by electing not Huckabee, but Thompson as their pick. Rudy is gleefully beaming at his chances

Posted at 3:16pm on Dec. 29, 2007 It's game time! And my final support goes to.......

By IL-Tony

Mike Huckabee. I know every single side has slammed the guy as a liberal, but I am not buying it. I'm no Huckabot, but I think I have picked him BECAUSE of the weakness of the "front-runners". Romney is complete sleaze in my opionion. I laughed at his ad where he slams Huckabee for making 1033 pardons. How many did Romney make? ZERO. Zilch. Zip. Nada. That's NOT a leader, that's politically covering your rear.
