By OCBill
In the 1990 Texas governor's race, a Republican named Clayton Williams led by as many as 20 points in the polls. However, a series of missteps including a much-publicized skipped handshake with Ann Richards after a debate contributed to his ultimate loss.

Romney demonstrated in Michigan two things:
1. he is not a conservative
2. he is not a leader
On the first point, he promised a federal solution to what everyone paying attention knows is a state problem (the "one state recession" in Michigan). The auto industry has expanded in the U.S. with both foreign and domestic auto companies building plants in America OUTSIDE of Michigan. Romney, when pandering for votes, is more than happy to jump on the "All problems are federal" bandwagon. A true conservative and/or an honest candidate would have pointed out the steps that Michigan could take to help itself. Romney did not do this.
