By nerogates
Remember when you got bubbles? It came in a pink bottle, usually, and was part of the gift bag for li'l Billy's birthday party. This child's chotchkee was, and still is, universally loved. You would carefully twist off the cap, treating each drop as if it were uranium. The thought of spilling this sweet soap was devastating. The dual ring staff which was included featured a side for either big or small bubbles.

Posted at 3:03pm on Mar. 4, 2008 Charisma Conquers Clinton, Conservatives
By nerogates
The most recent incarnation of The Almighty here on earth is on the verge of becoming the Democrat Nominee for President. Senator O has left smiling sheep in his wake. His fattened flock is unaware that a severe sheering is mere months away.
How did this happen? Charisma conquers, style swims, and substance sinks. The Secular Messiah glowed with blinding aura which cast an even deeper shadow over HRC, herself. She was totally unmatched and unmistakably mortal over the course of the campaign.

By nerogates
To further illustrate that we occupy a political Twilight Zone, I want to a look at the classic episode of said show, To Serve Man. Strange aliens arrive on earth at a period of tension between world powers. They address the United Nations and assure them that their motives are benevolent.
The strangers promise, and deliver, peace, unlimited natural resources, and an end to hunger and poverty. Armed only with a book, the head alien, and his kin win over a cynical population. Except for one code breaker, who has been assigned to translate the alien book.

Posted at 12:05am on Feb. 29, 2008 William F. Buckley, Jr., A Mile Marker on the Way
By nerogates
About ten years ago, I attended my first, and only, CPAC Conference in Connecticut. The reason: William F. Buckley. As a young conservative, I believed every idea in my little brain was a revelation. Then I caught this guy on PBS. Buckley, with his strange accent and ten dollar words, had built the foundation for conservatism. His ideas didn't just hit the political landscape like sprinklings from a salt shaker, but rather an avalanche. It was appropriate for the avid skier to outrace the wave of ideas which crashed upon our political shores in the last half the 20th Century.

By nerogates
Politics is the Blood Sport which leaves no scar, none that we can see. Ironically, for all of the blood spilled on desert sands, beach heads, and dense, green jungle, in the name of war, political Pilates remain unscathed.
As von Clausewitz taught us, war is the extension of politics. The two go hand in fist. History was built on war. Political leaders want to make history. There should be no surprises. The real question is not whether a political leader with no military background is fit to lead. It is not about chicken hawks or damning doves.

Posted at 12:14am on Feb. 21, 2008 Are We Afraid to be Right?
By nerogates
Forgive the pun, but I believe we are afraid to be right. Freedom beats oppression. Democracy defeats dictatorship. Markets maul managed, collectivist economies. Speech suffocates censorship. Liberty tackles tyranny. Life conquers death.
In a nutshell, that is what it means to be not only an American but a conservative. Too extreme? No.
The Left, which likes to promote freedom a la carte, cannot let freedom ring. It hits a sour note. The Left lines up against the freedom forces of the world. It is pro-communist, pro-socialist, and anti-American. Its heroes are those who fight freedom; Uncle Joe, Mao, Hugo, and poor, Frail Fidel.

Posted at 11:30pm on Feb. 20, 2008 Did We Forget How to Negotiate?
By nerogates
The key to successful diplomacy is leverage. There is a balance between philosophy and physics which allows for a successful negotiation. Unfortunately, we, as a nation, have used a stick over a pebble in an effort to move a boulder.
The United States of America, despite all of her warts, is still the last best hope for today. While we outsource jobs, war, and surrender sovereignty, our culture is what captures the imagination of the world's eye. The best and worst of our culture, to be sure, but it is still an American World. Even though we're asking the dealer for a hit, while we hold an Ace and a Queen, we are still winning.

Posted at 4:07am on Feb. 17, 2008 Spielberg's Olympian Effort Deserves a Bronze
By nerogates
I caught a quick item the other day. Steven Spielberg, the great director who gave us Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Schindler's List, withdrew his role as part of the creative team for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
The Olympics has devolved from amateur athletics to political farce over the years. The 1980 U. S. boycott by the United States of the Moscow Games was followed by the Soviet/Eastern Bloc boycott of the L. A. Games in 1984. Politics is nothing new to the Olympics. From the screw job Jim Thorpe got to Tommy Davis and John Carlos to the 1972 Gold Medal Basketball Game, when the U. S. was upset by the Soviet Union in a controversial ending.

Posted at 10:05am on Feb. 16, 2008 Rain, Rain Go Away
By nerogates
The other day the Northeast got the Sampler Platter from Old Man Winter. There was snow, ice, slush, and rain all in about a 14 hour period. As I drove to work, I heard regular traffic and weather updates. That was typical. Then the little slices of life from commuters on how they are dealing with the weather were broadcast. What a bunch of whiners.
I hate driving in the rain. It is, however, a fact of life. Our citizenry has gotten so used to the government handling things, as a whole, it has become soft. I half expected to hear a quote from some blow-hard pol about how the rising tides must be stopped, or we will all be damned.
