Posted at 5:16am on Jun. 10, 2008 LA '06 revisited -- lessons to take away
By Oz
I spent the afternoon with my father-in-law yesterday, working on a small deck for my back yard and we spent a good deal of our time talking about this race since that happens to be where my father in law is from.
Contrary to a lot of what you may have read or heard, my father-in-law summed up the election pretty much as this:
1) Woody Jenkins ran an incredibly negative campaign that turned off a lot of people.

Posted at 4:11pm on Jun. 4, 2008 Breaking -- McConnell shuts down the Senate
By Oz
McConnell has shut down the Senate over the judges issue by forcing the clerk to read the whole 500 page global warming bill aloud.
I'm listening to it on CSPAN2 because I'm a geek.

Posted at 2:47pm on May 9, 2008 There is a disconnect here at redstate, and it has consequences.
By Oz
There seems to be a disconnect here at Redstate between desires and realities.
This is not an attempt to get you to like McCain or to stop cricizing McCain or to turn your bumper stickers one way or another.
Let me give you a series of short observations:
1) At one point when I pitched an idea that everyone give $250 to McCain out of their stimulas package (around February), the idea was met with great excitement and even warranted me a front page promote (yeah, me!).

Posted at 9:30am on May 8, 2008 The Path Back to the Majority
By Oz
As I've stated a few places, all they really need to do for now is do the five things that we've been saying for a long time:
1) Make the tax cuts permanent
2) Cut spending
3) Win the war
4) Fight for judges
5) Secure the borders
Add in, #6 and #7:
6) Reduce energy costs
7) Help with the housing situation
Now, you might be saying, how do you do that in the minority?
Well, you do what Newt did in 1994 and what the Dems did in 2006: You promise stuff (NOTE: If you actually deliver what you promise, you get to stay longer).

Posted at 3:02pm on Apr. 30, 2008 This conservative's take on McCain [updated]
By Oz
Okay. Here's my take on John McCain:
Things I like about McCain:
-- Judges will be more conseravtive than under a Dem
-- He is committed to winning in Iraq, Afghanistan, GWOT
-- McCain has vowed to block all earmarks
-- McCain will make Bush's tax cuts permanent
-- He is good on guns and will protect 2nd Amendment rights
-- He is a man of word. I don't always like his word, but he follows it.

Posted at 4:10pm on Apr. 29, 2008 Have black leaders decided that Obama is a white elitist?
By Oz
Andrew Sullivan quotes Al Sharpton as follows:
Barack Obama made a call for nonviolence in the aftermath of the Sean Bell verdict - infuriating the Rev. Al Sharpton, who accused the presidential candidate of trying to "grandstand in front of white people," sources told The Post.

Posted at 3:30pm on Apr. 28, 2008 It's time for you to pony up for McCain out of your rebate checks
By Oz
As I mentioned in my previous blog entry a couple of months ago, it's time for us to pony up for McCain.
Is he my top choice? No, he's not, mostly because of Illegal Immigration.
However, I do know that the Dims in the Senate are trying to run out the clock on judicial nominees so that a Democrat can filll those positiona and the liberals on the Supreme Court are doing the same thing.
McCain can and will give us better judges than any Democrat.

Posted at 12:49pm on Apr. 24, 2008 I might have to vote for Obama ... really. [Update: Okay I repent]
By Oz
If there is any truth to this rumor, I would have to vote for Obama and, no, I'm not joking.
I watched Carly up close almost single handidly destroy one of the greatest American companies, Hewlett-Packard.
There is no way I would ever vote for her to be a heartbeat from the presidency.
Update:
Okay, I repent. Only Brian H as a fellow HP-er can know the sheer terror that being in Carly's chain of command generates for me.

Posted at 9:59am on Mar. 10, 2008 $250 for John McCain. You can spend the rest of the money Bush sends you
By Oz
We don't get enough action items... therefore, promoted by Adam C
I've mentioned this once and I'll mention it again when May 1st rolls around, but this blog is for people who are planners.
On or around May 1st, most Red Staters will get a rebate from the Federal government. The easiest way to put some of it to use for the sake of your family, your country, and the economy (think of all those American media consultants) is take the second chunk of money (the first is going to your church, right?) from your rebate and write a check for $250 to John McCain.

Posted at 2:18pm on Mar. 5, 2008 If I were McCain's campaign manager, here is what I would have him do [Updated]
By Oz
1) I would immeadiately declare that I am going to run a 50 state campaign and make it a stated goal to visit all 50 states prior to the election in November.
In reality, we're only talking about significant time in a few "extra" states that I think McCain can put into play such as New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
2) I would use these trips to fund raise for EVERY GOP Senate candidate and state party as well as myself (except for Stevens and other "under investigation" candidates).
3) I would plan these events around any primaries that have not yet been decided.
Example 1:
Fly into California the day after the California primary and stand up with the new GOP representative that was just voted on by Republicans and congratulate him, raise money for him and move on to meet with Arnold.
Example 2:
Fly into Georgia the day after the GOP re-nominates Saxby Chambliss and have a big celebration. Raise money for Saxby, Raise some for McCain and have everyone in Georgia thinking -- Wow, McCain cared enough to fly out to Georgia.
4) Hire a bevy of lawyers to figure out how they are going to take on the FEC if the FEC is ever functional again.
5) Get one of my buddies in the Senate to place permanent holds on the Democratic FEC nominations so that there is no chance in hell that the FEC gets functional again prior to the election.
6) Make a very visual visit with Thompson, Romney, Huckabee, and Guiliani. Call it a "pick their brain session" when you discuss with them the things that they learned in talking to their supporters throughout the campaign. Upon exiting the meeting say that you are considering Guiliani for Homeland Security, Attorney General, or ICE.
7) Make up your list of swing states and add several more (already mentioned above) and start running Ads there now and see what kind of traction you can get in the polls.
8) DO NOT go on vacation. I just don't understand the John Kerry skiing, Elizabeth Dole (gee I did well in one primary, I think I'll take a couple of weeks off). Take your "vacations" as "planning retreats" -- single days off the trail or very light on the trail (one private fundraiser) with the rest of it as DOWN TIME.
9) Get your young, attractive daughter out on the campaign trail with you (unless you know of some bombshell floating around the internet that you'd like to avoid).
10) Answer press questions ALL DAY LONG. If the press loves you, it will help.
11) Give me a raise and tell my wife and kids that I would see them in November.
Update: The other thing I would do is have him talk about judges needing to be confirmed all over the country.
