By Cicero
I was on my way home and was listening to the radio play the top 5 songs from 1972. When they played the #1 song I couldn't help but think how well it described Obama and his chorus of supporters:
Candyman by Sammy Davis w/ lyrics:

I swear, this is what we are up against. And our candidate seems to be intent on being the "Old Man" telling America to sit down and eat her vegetables.

Posted at 3:53pm on Apr. 21, 2008 How Do You Prove Your Identity In Court, In A World Filled With Identity Theft?
By Cicero
Traditionally the Birth Certificate has been accepted as proof of identity- and why not? It is issued by the government.
Other forms of proof include Driver's Licenses, tax returns, Social Security numbers- essentially government issued documents.
However, since identity theft is on the rise, should the government continue to accept government issued documents as legitimate proof of identity?

By Cicero
This is an Appendix to the my main post concerning the raid of the FLDS ranch in Texas and the following hearing about the custody of the children. The main post was already too long, so I decide to separate several thing into this post.
My main post is here:

I think it would be better if most of the comments went there.

Posted at 8:30pm on Apr. 18, 2008 Texas: Pouring piss from a boot
By Cicero
“‘Late you come, but still you come.’ You should have recognized the value of criticism during the years we were in opposition [when] our press was forbidden, our meetings were forbidden, and we were forbidden to speak for years on end.” -Adolph Hitler, responding to the Social Democratic Party complaints about the violation of civil liberties.
h/t to http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/008477.html
The Nazis would have been just as repressive without this excuse, but being able to offer it made Hitler's task easier. Like Canadian supporters of hate-speech legislation, supporters of the Weimar Republic thought that their groups and causes would occupy all seats of authority and set all social and legal agendas forever. Shades of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association or the Canadian Jewish Congress! They couldn't envisage the guns of their own laws being turned around to point at them one day.
This has become my favorite quote of the month. While it is being used above in relation to the Canadian censorship of blogs, it also applies to the current situation in Texas.

By Cicero
Well, I figure I ought to post a few of the links to help people figure out what is going on about this. As the MSM seems to filled with hyperbole or titillation rather then any actual news.
Here is the blog of a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune who works the polygamy beat (so she actually knows what she's talking about) and who is personally on the scene in Texas:

Posted at 5:40pm on Mar. 28, 2008 VP candidates: How would they impact the campaign?
By Cicero
The big three VP candidates are going to be Pawlenty, Sanford, and Romney.
Oh, McCain might have a surprise pick and select somebody else, but I doubt it.
Sanford is the pick for ideological reasons:
1: He's trusted by conservatives
2: He is most famous for his opposition to pork barrel expenditures. If McCain decides to make cutting wasteful government spending his primary economic message then Sanford would be a good pick.

Posted at 11:26pm on Feb. 2, 2008 Romney won Maine??
By Cicero
Wait, what??
http://www.woi-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=278911&nav=menu115_12_15
I am so confused as it seems there was also a caucus in Louisiana before Florida voted and people are saying McCain won that one...
It's as though the MSM is deciding which states count and which don't.
Have there been other events that have been missed?

Posted at 10:03pm on Jan. 11, 2008 Bishop Romney
By Cicero
While there has been a lot of attention paid to the fact that Mike Huckabee was a Baptist Pastor (something that to me is a big positive despite my opposition to Huckabee as a candidate), not nearly as much attention has been paid to the fact that Mitt Romney was also a Pastor.
Now there are some differences between Mormon and Baptist Pastors, but there are actually alot of similarities in duties. For example, a Mormon Bishop (Pastor) is in charge of the distribution of charitable services. He also is the local source for doctrinal clarity. He provides counseling to families, sinners, and any member of the congregation who is in need.

Posted at 12:53pm on Jan. 4, 2008 Three Tickets out of Iowa, Two from New Hampshire
By Cicero
While the old saying may not hold up quite as well any more I think we ought to consider it.
The MSM has been putting more and more emphasis on Iowa and New Hampshire as "must win" states.
Instead let us consider the apparent likely scenario of:
Iowa:
1st: Huckabee
2nd: Romney
3rd: Thompson
4th: McCain
New Hampshire:
1st: McCain
2nd: Romney
3rd: Guiliani
4th: Huckabee
Would Romney really be done? According to the old standards he wouldn't. Expectations are bogus, winning delegates is what matters- and in the primary, since most states distribute delegates proportionately Romney might actually be ahead in the delegate count.

Posted at 4:50pm on Oct. 11, 2007 Mrs. Patton: A Gold Star Mother (1944)
By Cicero
Five days ago, while at church, I listened to a talk given concerning Death and the Resurrection, given by Thomas Monson.
Brother Monson chose to focus this talk by speaking about his boyhood friend, Arthur Patton, who was killed in 1944 while serving on the carrier White Plains, and the comfort he had given Arthur's mother when the news arrived.
While this is not typical fare here at Redstate, I was deeply moved by this talk, and the feeling that Arthur Patton and his mother need to be remembered. Today, the video of this talk was posted online.
