Posted at 5:34pm on Feb. 11, 2008 How McCain can unite the base without really trying
By hoyasaxa
OK, so my title is a bit over the top, but step one of the process might be underway through no effort of McCain or his campaign.
Over on DailyKos, they're swooning over a new web video that mocks McCain's statements on the War in Iraq in a sort of catchy artsy fashion.

I wish all RedHot entries were open for comment because then I wouldn't be writing a diary on this.

When I and other SoCons made this exact point with regard to Rudy's candidacy, we were essentially told to go suck an egg if we didn't like it. And now . . . Well, just take a look at some of the recommended blogs above.

Posted at 11:41am on Nov. 20, 2007 Rep. Mike Ferguson (NJ-07) Retires
By hoyasaxa
So we've got another open seat to defend in the great Garden State, as Rep. Mike Ferguson made a surprise announcement yesterday that he plans to retire at the end of his term. Last cycle, Ferguson barely survived a spirited challenge from Assemblywoman Linda Stender, and she's running again, so perhaps he didn't want to go through another tough campaign.

By hoyasaxa
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jim Saxton is retiring at the end of this term after 24 years in Congress.
Personally, this news is pretty interesting, as I interned for him as an undergrad in college, and lived in his congressional district from the time I was one until heading off to college. Rep. Saxton wasn't the most conservative guy, but he was a darn good congressman. He will be missed.

Posted at 12:25pm on Oct. 10, 2007 House 2008 News: Mike Sodrel back for more
By hoyasaxa
Former Congressman Mike Sodrel is running again in Indiana's Ninth District. He'll face Baron Hill for the fourth time in as many elections. Hill leads the best of five series 2-1, but Sodrel's win came in a presidential election year when Bush was carrying the district with a whopping 59% of the vote. Hopefully the top of the ticket can help him to victory again.

Posted at 2:24am on May 18, 2007 The End of the Republican Party?
By hoyasaxa
I’m putting this up for discussion. I don’t want this to turn into yet another thread over whether the GOP is making a colossal policy mistake in not shutting down this bill. I'm focusing on the electoral implications.
But let’s actually look at the numbers and see what the future holds for the Republican Party if the bill does pass.

Make some noise!
What does a random high school cheer have to do with a conservative Republican website?
Good question.
Michael Nutter, graduate of St. Joseph's Preparatory School (my alma mater) and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, won the Democratic nomination for mayor in Philadelphia tonight.

Posted at 5:55pm on Apr. 28, 2007 Conservative US Senate Candidate in New Jersey?
By hoyasaxa
If rumors out of the Garden State are true, it seems one of the most conservative members in the New Jersey legislature is gearing up to challenge 83 year old Frank Lautenberg, who is running for reelection in 2008.
State Assemblyman Michael Doherty (R – Warren) is planning to run against the state’s senior senator. Doherty is currently in the middle of his third term in the State Assembly, the lower house of New Jersey’s legislature. Prior to his election as assemblyman, Doherty served as a freeholder in Warren County, one of the most conservative counties in the state (Bush won 61.3% of the vote there in 2004). In 2006 Doherty was rumored to be mulling a bid to challenge Tom Kean from the right in the GOP primary, so he clearly is ambitious. The first link notes he will strike an interesting contrast with Lautenberg since he is forty years younger.
