Posted at 9:24pm on Jun. 4, 2007 Using Global Warming to Win the Terror War

By NotSoBlueStater

All it will take is a little Jujitsu and some creative financing.

It amazes me that it never seems to penetrate our collective psyches that the liberals' favorite obsession (global warming) and conservatives' greatest fear (global Islamic fascism) have the same basic solution. It's not as though nobody says it. President Bush, for example, has said repeatedly: Alternative energy not only protects the environment, but also helps remove a major source of terror funding.

The White House puts yet another bright, talented woman out there as it's public face. And it's no affirmative action thing. She is very, very good.

And that's just the start.

Posted at 5:19pm on Jan. 19, 2007 UN is to the Right as Iraq is to the Left

By NotSoBlueStater

I've noticed that the right side of the blogosphere gets very worked up when something goes wrong at the UN, while the left just sort of yawns. Similarly, the left gets nutty when something goes wrong in Iraq, while the right sort of shrugs it off as typical fog of war stuff.

My simple thought for the day is that both are doing the same thing for the same sorts of reasons. That is, in the eyes of the right, the cause in Iraq is so just that they are slow to admit that the effort on the ground has been frighteningly flawed -- and they accuse the left of missing the larger picture. Likewise, the left believes that internationalism is so undeniably right that it views indiscretions by UN officials as mere nits in the larger scheme of world affairs.

Posted at 4:12pm on Dec. 23, 2006 A Simple Case for President Guiliani

By NotSoBlueStater

Republicans should nominate Rudy Guiliani for president despite the fact that he's absolutely the wrong guy to re-ignite the suddenly flailing conservative movement.

Why?

Because he'd be a great war president. Especially during this war.

George W. Bush has given us the gift of moral clarity during what many (myself included) see as a life and death struggle against Islamic fascism. I sleep easier knowing that this man will never cave on the critical issue of our times. Despite any other reservations I have about him and his presidency, I'd vote for him again on this basis alone.

Posted at 10:31am on Dec. 7, 2006 Forced to Bet, I'd Put Money on President Obama in 2008

By NotSoBlueStater

Yes, I know this is a site to promote Republicans and conservatives, but I offer this anyway, as I think debating the merits of these thoughts does in fact help Republicans.

I've been thinking for 3 or 4 months now that Barack Obama will be elected president in 2008.

I started thinking he'd be president someday on election night 2004, when I saw Obama interviewed by one of the networks (I've never found a transcipt). He spoke graciously about the Democrats' national defeat, and spoke about how the Democrats would have to learn to function as the loyal opposition (which ironically they did not do). I was impressed by his gracious and statesmanlike words at a moment that was totally devastating to Democrats. I remember thinking that night that he would be the next Democrat elected president, but probably no sooner than 2012.

Posted at 2:00pm on Nov. 22, 2006 BU's Young Republicans, Tin Ears, and "Stare Decisis" on Racial Preference Policies

By NotSoBlueStater

Ah, youth...

The College Republican group at Boston University wants to re-open the debate on the absurdity of racial preference in handing out scholarships. To make their point, they have created a scholarship that is available only to whites.

Oops.

They are right, of course. Racial preference (aka Affirmative Action) was originally intended to be a temporary measure designed to help boost minorities through the glass ceilings that had clearly been the result of deep and long-standing racism in American society. The idea was to help support legitimately oppressed people and to offer more role models to aspiring young minorities. It has since morphed into a permanent entitlement, of course, and as a matter of public policy, racial preference has been proven to be both highly ineffective and morally wrong.

But I stand by my "oops".

Posted at 4:48pm on Nov. 8, 2006 A Moderate's Quick Take on Last Night

By NotSoBlueStater

I was rooting desperately for a Republican victory last night, as I still do not trust the Democrats on the GWOT. The people have spoken, and the Democrats have won fair and square. Nothing all that major changed. We still live in the greatest nation that has ever been.

That said, hopefully the veneer of responsible behavior that Nancy Pelosi has assumed of late is real. Our future, and our kids' futures, depend on it.

Posted at 3:50am on Nov. 3, 2006 Democrats call president "an imbecile", seek to undermine critical war legislation

By NotSoBlueStater

A Republican president had led the nation into war on one premise, then dramatically changed the emphasis midstream. During the aftermath of this perceived deception, a Democrat referred to the president as "an imbecile" on the Senate floor. The president's public approval had dipped to an unprecedented low as the war itself was going very, very poorly.

To make matters worse, before it began, it had been widely anticipated that the war would be won quickly and easily. However, there had since been numerous, devastating tactical miscalculations and leadership problems that had dashed any hope of a quick win -- and had cost a great many lives. This prompted a Democratic congressman to take the house floor and implore "Ought this war to continue? ... No -- not a day, not an hour."

Posted at 5:54pm on Oct. 26, 2006 Interesting Omission in Broder's Lieberman versus Lamont Column

By NotSoBlueStater

Can we all agree that Ned Lamont is at least somewhat a creation of the "netroots" movement?

If we can, then David Broder's column in the WaPo today has a very interesting omission: It makes no mention whatsoever of blogs or the Internet.

Posted at 3:26pm on Sep. 14, 2006 47 !?! Bush approval rises as conservatives consider the alternatives

By NotSoBlueStater

Rasmussen has Bush's approval at 47% today -- up a whopping 6% in four days. This data is somewhat correlated by several other polls that have ticked up from the high 30s to the low 40s recently.

Rasmussen attributes the jump to Bush winning back Republicans:

The spike is fueled largely by a resurgence of support among the President’s base. Eighty-five percent (85%) of Republicans now offer their approval. At its low point earlier in the year, just 66% of the GOP faithful approved of his job performance.
