By bobnivik
Just when we think we have it bad, Europe comes along and reminds us that it could be SO much worse.(ht-expatria via jihad watch )
""Assimilation is a crime against humanity," he told the crowd. Many Turks had travelled from France, Belgium and the Netherlands to hear his hour-long address in the shiny venue, the Koelnarena.

By bobnivik
But, although the race has been simplified, for me the choice still isn't simple. Every time it looks like McCain will break away from the pack, I panic in anticipation of four years of watching him stick it to conservatives on a more than occasional basis. When things seem to be breaking Romney's way, I panic in anticipation of an electoral rout in November followed by four years of a Clinton or Obama presidency.

By bobnivik
There has been a lot of talk lately about the “death” of Regan Conservatism, the “divorce” of conservatives from the GOP, and the utter-hopelessness-of-it-all in general. Honestly, it’s like something I’d expect form the Other Side™. So, the one man we all hoped would ride in on that shiny white steed and save our collective day seems to have rather chosen a mule. Honestly, what are we thinking? We’re saying we want one thing and then demanding another: We want the government out of our way, but then demand someone at the top of our party to charismatically tell us what to do. That very shining knight principle, I submit, is myopic and anti-conservative.

Posted at 6:24pm on Sep. 12, 2007 You know the news is good when CNN admits it.
By bobnivik
We know this story already, but I believe we should applaud such decent reporting, especially from the MSM.
As of 5:11pm EST, CNN has Anderson Cooper's "Sunni insurgents side with U.S. against al Qaeda" as it's main headline. I thought to myself, "Self, that's too good to be true. They probably refute themselves in the actual article." Reading on, I first stumble across this gem:

Posted at 5:14pm on Apr. 28, 2007 Wow, this explains a lot about France.
By bobnivik
As trendy as it has been here in the US to mock all things French, our ledgendary distaste has been one-upped.

By bobnivik
This bears following, for several reasons: Mauritania is a Muslim country, albeit highly syncretied with tribal culture. However, this is also significant in that a military that had staged a coup is actually giving up power for democracy; kind of like Pinochet, but less drawn out. I think we all agree that this is a good thing.

By bobnivik
Although I can't claim to have been a proficient writer here, what I have read has been invaluable information to me; I've learned a lot. And now, I'm asking for some help finding some more: I'm doing my Senior Research Paper on blogs in politics, specifically in '04, and I'm looking for original sources.

What Bill Arkin started is spreading: Liberals finaly being honest about the "support" they have for the troops. h/t LT Smash. Our particular example today is Loyola Law prof. Dr. June Terpstra.
Now, I'd condider myself conservative, but leaning pacifist for religious reasons. I take issue with "pre-emptive war," and even with some of our military training methods. That being said, anyone this unhinged with hatred and guilt does everyone, for and against the war, a complete disservice.

By bobnivik
In my sheltered southern/midwestern life I had rarely encountered liberalism in such rare form before college. Also, to chase a rabbit off of the main campaign trail...
What have I gotten myself into? I suppose conflict is inevitable in life, especially in the world of advocacy. It started in Chapel last week, where the theme was Acting on AIDS(*See disclaimer below). So far, so good, eh? Well, I get the part that AIDS needs to be acted on; it's a big problem. But then they started telling us how we should be "Acting on AIDS," and I found their methods to be appallingly shallow and manipulative.
The killer was when, after working the crowd into wave of pity and guilt over the dead/dying folks, a staffer herded the sheep to sign a petition to support that which they knew nothing about and which many of them would actually oppose, had they been paying attention:

Posted at 6:15pm on Apr. 16, 2006 The OTHER Alternate Fuel
By bobnivik
Amid the wild speculations on Iran, the discussion of alternatives to oil has come up once more. The economics of Ethanol are in question, what with subsidies out the wazzoo, but I have heard next to nothing about Biodiesel. It seems to be efficient, both in production and utilization (maintaining typical diesel efficiency).
Why do I bring this seemingly random point up? Because the company Louis Dreyfus is building a soy-biodiesel plant in the nest town from my place in Claypool, Indiana.
