By Adam C

Soren has an exclusive poll on LA-04's GOP primary. This is a safe seat and I don't know the candidates well. Gorman's campaign has released a poll showing Gorman ahead 25-14-10 in the three way race. It's important to get good, solid "not business as usual" Rs in safe seats like LA-04. If anyone knows these three candidates and can tell us more, consider writing a diary on the race.

By Adam C

Google has a history of changing its basic site for holidays including days such as Earth Day and some other minor holidays. But today, Instapundit notes that Google has no change to their website. It's unfortunate that such a good product is run by political activists.

By Adam C

Congrats RedStaters. We just passed the 100 mark for donors to Lt. Gov. Parnell and his challenge to corrupt Rep. Young. $2,400 is a great fundraising drive for RS but the 100 unique donors is really something to be proud of.

By Adam C

Another Democratic woman, Geraldine Ferraro, has said she may not vote for Obama. If his problem goes this high, there may be fire causing that smoke. And if other D women continue calling the Obama campaign sexist after Clinton drops out, then it could get pretty bad for Obama with women voters.

And the emerging narrative on sexism

By Adam C

This is a Sunday Open Thread. I'll kick it off but noting that the last week has seen a continuation of a small narrative from the Democratic race: Sen. Obama as sexist. I doubt that's true anymore than "Republicans are racist." But that won't stop it from making headlines if a major issue happens. Right now it seems there has been a string of small incidents that some see as evidence of sexism:

* Calling a reporter "sweetie" in a condescending tone, which he apologized for any noted that it is a habit of his. I'm not sure talking down to female reporters is a good habit to have when he starts trying to win back Hillary supporters.

* When talking about Sen. Clinton, Obama has used calculated phrases like "when the claws come out" and "when she's feeling down periodically she launches attacks." Some Democrats see this as a calculated attempt to define Ms. Clinton as a "female candidate" and to play up negative stereotypes of women.

In sum, Jennifer Rubin describes this thusly:

had a Republican done the “sweetie” and “claws” routine, every NOW representative worth her salt would be on the air calling for heads to roll. You want double standards? Got ‘em right here. In this wonderful post-partisan, post-racial era, someone forgot to tell the liberal media establishment and their beloved candidate that sexism is passé.

If this is all they have, the argument won't get very far. But if Sen. Obama does or says something worse, then this list of small problems will explode into a narrative that "Obama is sexist." This is the same phenomenon that took minor issues (flag pin, inability to bowl, and not crossing his heart during the pledge) and made them well known after the Rev. Wright flap made stories on "Is Obama patriotic or anti-American" acceptable. If "Is Obama sexist" catches on, each of these quotes will haunt him.

Posted at 7:43pm on May 18, 2008 Sen. McCain: Run Against Congress

By Adam C

I will echo this post and its suggestion. Running against Bush will alienate too many supporters. But no one likes Congress. Rs don't, Is don't, and Ds don't. Congress has been the main source of the pork barreling, the corruption, the spending, and the general out-of-touch activity over the past 4-8 years. It can be hard to run against your friends and colleagues. But Sen. McCain, you know they are the problem. You've said it before. Sen. Obama is in the majority. He could be working on bills to raise spending and "end" the War right now. But you will face a hostile Democratic Congress if you win. Run against the whole institution. If you win, you will have the high ground and the bully pulpit. McCain vs. Congress. It's been happening for years, and the people are on your side.

Posted at 11:19pm on May 11, 2008 McCain strategy on Obama

By Adam C

According to this article, McCain has been portraying Obama as inexperienced, self-entitled and effete, a candidate coddled by a loving press corps and lacking the judgment necessary for the highest office in the land. We'll see if it works, but if that was the strategy it was certainly a successful three months in "defining your opponent."

Posted at 1:01pm on May 10, 2008 Taxing Harvard

By Adam C

So Massachusetts seems to have run out of hard working private sector entities to tax. So they are thinking of taxing Big Education now. This shouldn't be surprising. When Big Government politicians see numbers that end in "Billions" it's only natural they want a piece of the pie. I don't know if this is a good or bad idea, but it's definitely novel and oh so Massachusetts.

Posted at 12:56pm on May 10, 2008 Get Ready for the Race Card

By Adam C

Since overt racism in the Democratic Party has dwindled since the 1960s, the more subtle "race card" has risen. To see how the subtle race card will be played this year, here is a great example of how you will be called a racist, indirectly. If you believe that people who work hard will succeed, that's racist. If you believe that history no longer is a big impediment to black advancement, you are a racist. And the professor writing the op-ed is surprised that so many whites (even college educated whites) believe that the present and hard work are more important to success. It's more subtle that Al Sharpton race-baiting, which means it's more dangerous. Expect more such efforts to brand personal responsibility as a racist concept.

Posted at 12:05pm on May 9, 2008 McCain stumping for R Senators

By Adam C

McCain is trying to help out Rs in tough elections in lean D states: OR, MN, ME. Sens. Smith, Coleman and Collins could use the help in their close races. Hopefully, McCain's appeal to Is helps keep a few seats in the R column.
