By Shaggy Dog
An article in the Chicago Sun-Times today highlights the true agenda of the left with regards to oil prices. The article highlights the fact that:
Americans drove 30 billion fewer miles from November through April than during the same period a year before, the biggest such drop since the Iranian revolution led to gasoline supply shortages in 1979-80.

Posted at 1:24pm on Jun. 6, 2008 Two Commercials for the McCain Campaign
By Shaggy Dog
So far, I haven't seen any campaign commercials from McCain other than personal story stuff about his very impressive life story.Unfortunately, as great as McCain's life story is, it's not going to be enough to beat the Metaphor/Messiah. McCain is going to start taking some tough shots at BHO.
Here's my take on a couple of seemingly obvious ones:
First Commercial –
/Ominous Voiceover/ Barack Obama talks about new ideas to address rising energy costs, but what is he really saying?

Drudge has a USA Today story up this morning, quoting Hillary discussing her rationale for staying in and why she deserves the nomination:
"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

Today in the Chicago Sun-Times, gossip columnist Michael Sneed- who has a pretty good track record with her sources and good connections with Obama's Chicago Team- quotes a “top Barack Obama supporter” expressing the view that
Obama must win the Indiana primary May 6 to maintain his momentum -- or "it becomes hard to see a winning scenario unless Obama and Hillary Clinton are on the same ticket."

The 42nd President has resurfaced again to lament that Team Obama has “played the race card” against him.
From the ABC News political blog:
Clinton was talking to station WHYY about the fallout over his comparison of Obama's South Carolina primary victory with the support of black Democrats to Jesse Jackson's primary wins. Those comments were portrayed by critics as an attempt to highlight Obama's race.

In advance of Pope Benedict XVI’s arrival in the US, the White House has been working hard to let it be known that they are pulling out all the stops to honor him on this visit, including the unprecedented honor of picking up the Pope at Andrews AFB and hosting an East Room birthday dinner for the Pope (that he may not be able to attend).

I write this as someone who favored McCain during the primary. While there remains no question whatsoever that I will vote for McCain over Hilbama, I was deeply disturbed today to read an article on Drudge today quoting McCain’s latest statements on the economy.

By Shaggy Dog
The credit crunch dilemma and the Federal Reserve’s unprecedented actions to alleviate it have been well-blogged here and elsewhere on the net, but there was an interesting development noted today in the Wall Street Journal (sorry- paper edition, only $1.50, but here’s a CNBC link with an abbreviated version ).
Lehman Brothers has been struggling with liquidity issues, in part due to the $17.8BN of unsold leveraged loans on its balance sheet that it committed to and funded with the intent of selling and skimming lucrative fee income. However, when the loan markets collapsed last year, Lehman and other investment banks were stuck with at the time over $300 BN of unsold loans. It sounds like the banks have been able to get down to the $150BN range by selling at heavy discounts (10% or more) and eating the loss. But this remaining balance continues to choke banks’ balance sheets and prohibits their ability to make new loans.

I wish I had the link to the excellent diary from earlier in the week about the idiotic premise for the latest Iraq War movie (actually Anti-Iraq War movie) opening this weekend- "Stop-Loss."
The movie was produced by MTV films and apparently heavily promoted by MTV to the teen and young adult target markets, and therefore was expected to outperform the other GWOT/Iraq War Hollywood tripe ("Redacted," "Rendition," "Lions for Lambs").

By Shaggy Dog
There has been much analysis about how Hillary can’t win the pledged delegate count or the popular vote count in the Democratic primary, and therefore there’s no objective basis for her to argue that the Super Delegates should tip the election in her favor.
Her sole claim seems to be that she has one more “big states.” That’s a claim that I have snickered at thus far, but she may ultimately be able to spin it in a manner that actually gives her a leg to stand on.
