Posted at 10:14pm on Jul. 9, 2008 Newsweek via NPR: Obama "frankly naïve" (or: Obama, "Candidate of Change," Changes His Positions as Often as His BVDs)

By Crowe

(Another alternate title: Obamas, in fit of laughter, allow daughters to be violated)

By now most of you know that Obama went back on his word once again and allowed his daughters to take part in an interview on Access Hollywood. This, of course, is contrary to his consistent position that his daughters would be off-limits to interviewers during the campaign.

Then, this morning, he explained to Matt Lauer why this breach of his consistent position, something which he felt strongly about, was allowed to occur... He "got carried away in the moment," because "everybody was laughing." He assures us that it merely "cropped up" and that he simply "didn't catch it quickly enough." (H/T Michelle Malkin)

But then later today we found out more details on how the Obamas simply "got carried away." Richard Wolffe, a Senior Correspondent for Newsweek who has been covering the Obama campaign, was interviewed today on NPR's All Things Considered. (The audio is available via the All Things Considered website, sorry, no direct link available day of) He said that it was seven-year-old Malia's birthday and they were spending it in Montana [and, of course, this camera crew from Access Hollywood just happened to be there.]

Posted at 4:46pm on Jun. 27, 2008 Modern Liberalism Kills a Baby Boy

By Crowe

From the diaries by Leon...

A 14 year-old girl in Texas gave birth in her junior high bathroom, stuffed her son's mouth full of toilet paper when he started to cry, and then flushed her son in the toilet, thereby killing him.

I cannot imagine the terror and despair this girl must have been experiencing during her pregnancy -- knowing how fundamentally altered her life would be once the child was born, fearing her parents' reactions, fearing the sideways looks and hushed glances from classmates and people in general, fearing the great unknown of motherhood. Her fears were real and resulted in the death of a baby boy. She was paralyzed by those fears during the pregnancy, undoubtedly wishing it would "just go away," but without the means or wherewithal to procure an abortion -- who knows about the father of her child. But wishing her pregnancy would simply go away only resulted in that paralysis that allows time to pass and the natural consequences of chosen behavior to come to fulfillment. She gave birth nearly nine months after having sex, as nature dictates, after weeks of fear-induced inaction and useless wishing it away. She was afraid. Her son is dead. Her fears, however, were based entirely on a lie.

Posted at 1:26am on Jun. 15, 2008 Bush Campaigns(?) For McCain...?

By Crowe

Bush, though he still wracks up cash in fundraisers, mostly has been persona non grata on the campaign trail. But I wonder. Is Bush actually governing in such a way to help McCain's candidacy?

I haven't fleshed this out completely and I may just be tired, but please consider a few things that struck me this evening. I'm sure the good and sharp people 'round these parts will well assist me in putting this theory through a wringer.

Posted at 11:34am on Jun. 10, 2008 Thanks, Andrea, for that moment of honesty...

By Crowe

So Andrea Mitchell threw the Obama camp (or at least "Democrat Strategists") under the bus in her apology to Bristol, Virginia for describing it as, "redneck, sort of bordering-on-Appalachia country.” The local paper "seethed" at this characterization and Mitchell apologized, revealing the source of that characterization...

I owe and [sic] apology to the good people of Bristol, Virginia, for something stupid that I said last week. I was trying to explain based on reporting from Democratic strategists why Barack Obama was campaigning in southwest Virginia. But without attribution or explanation, I used a term strategists often use to demean an entire community.

(emphasis mine).

Posted at 8:59am on Jul. 14, 2005 She already IS "American"

By Crowe

If you've not found Michael Yon's blog about his day-to-day experiences in Iraq as an author riding with the Command Sergeant Major and meeting ordinary Iraqis in their villages, you need to start reading him.

Especially the story about the future Dr. Viana...

"I want to be American. I will be American someday."

...

"I will study to be doctor in London. Then I will move to Paris. Then I will move to San Francisco and be American."

...

As I walked away, I wondered where courage is born to dream with such determination while living in a tent without running water tottering on the border between Iraq and Iran.

She already is "American." If not in citizenship, then certainly in optimism and daring to dream.

FOX News' Brian Wilson is reporting as I type. Nothing online yet to link to.

Let the games begin.

My prediction: the filibuster's days are numbered.

Posted at 11:30pm on Jun. 26, 2005 Ta-ta for Now...

By Crowe

I'll not be posting much here at Redstate for the forseeable future. Before I get to the reasons why, indulge me for a moment on what I think needs to happen for Redstate to be a better forum for its stated mission.

I've been on Redstate since darn near its inception. I remember when the founders were setting it up and the launch, and starting my account, not quite sure what to expect. It has really taken off, I like it lots. I've learned quite a bit, been challenged on some topics, and met some great people. There are some very smart, well-spoken people here who are genuinely interested in furthering Republican and conservative causes and spread the messages. There are some very smart and well-spoken people here who flatly disagree with the conservative and/or the Republican message, but who nonetheless present the "loyal opposition" and challenge well the conservatives and Republicans here... keeps us honest. We appreciate it. No, really.

But...  (See the big "but" and my personal send-off below the fold...)

Posted at 3:23pm on Jun. 16, 2005 Gitmo Opponents Make No Sense

By Crowe

"Those who are most urgently advocating that we  shut down Guantanamo probably don't agree with our policies anyway." - Vice President Dick Cheney

They just won't let up. The hordes who, out of malice, ignorance, or some naïve desire for the United States to be "liked" - as though shutting down one detention facility will bring a springtime of good feelings the world over - continue demanding that Camp Delta at Guantanamo Bay be shut down.

What, exactly,  the United States should do with the 540-plus souls currently held there isn't quite clear though. Demcrat Senator Joe Biden insisted, "I think we should end  up shutting it down, moving those prisoners." One of his donkey colleagues,  Pat Leahy of Vermont agreed, "I think that eventually we have to [shut it  down] because either that or at least have the administration come out and be honest about it, say who's being held there, why they're being held there."

The Senator from Vermont apparently misses a couple very  important facts.

Posted at 9:36am on Jun. 6, 2005 D-Day: 51 years hence. French worth it?

By Crowe

51 years ago today began the liberation of an ungrateful people from their latest conquerors.

All talk about the evil of Naziism aside, considering the French themselves at that time and since then, was it worth it to free them? Or was that only a necessary by-product of defeating German National Socialism and the (then) rumored mass murder taking place in the name of the German people with or without their willful collaboration?

A few more thoughts below the fold...
