My wife was watching "Big Bang Theory" on CBS and during the credits for the show, this appeared on the screen for a few seconds:
"Chuck-Lorre Productions#212"
“I believe the voices of fear, both from without and within, can only be dispelled by trusting the voice that comes from the heart. Be still and listen to it. If it speaks of love and compassion for others, for the world itself, it might just be the voice of God – or a reasonable facsimile. If, however, it snarls with fear at the unknown, fear of losing what you have or not getting what you want, then it might just be the voice of Rupert Murdoch – or a reasonable facsimile.”

Posted at 3:07pm on Mar. 4, 2008 Will Racism Cost the Dems the White House in 2008?
By Captain Toke
If Barak wins the Dem nomination, will the old school Dems vote for him?
A) The baby boomers and seniors vote in a lot higher percentages than any other age group
B) The seniors and old middle age population has grown significantly
C) A lot of these seniors grew up and supported the Democratic party of the 50’s and 60’s (back when it was a mainstream, respectable party)
My hypothesis is this: I believe the old school Dems will have a hard time pulling the lever for Barak Obama. These people were raised in post depression era homes. Racism played a part in these households, that is a fact. My father is one of this group, and he thought Archie Bunker was a righteous dude. I will admit, my father is and was a blatant racist, but he also a registered Dem. I like to believe I escaped that fate because I could easily pull the lever for someone like Condi Rice (black and a female), JC Watts, Michael Steele, just to name a few. But I don’t believe it will be easy for older Dems. My evidence is not only anecdotal, although there is a lot. My father, My mother (a registered Dem who hates W) said she will vote for McCain (although she never attributed that to Obama being black), and many other family and friends who feel the same way (that they will vote for McCain, not that they have problems with blacks).

I wrote my little diary raising valid questions about the Republican candidate. I took off for the weekend and read the comments this morning. I was amazed!
I was called a troll, dense, stupid, etc. I obviously put a lot more thought into the repercussions of our candidate than those who think I’m stupid for raising these questions. I am not a troll either, not here anyway. I will admit, I like to troll liberal websites and call them on their idiocy. I often get banned, but so do a lot of liberals who don’t fall lockstep behind the party line. I saw a few commentors here calling for the ban of anti-McCain trolls. Are you serious?! Calling for the ban on dissenting views? Conservatives want to ban those who raise legitimate questions about the Republican nominee? Or maybe it is the Republicans who want to ban those raising questions about the Republican nominee.

By Captain Toke
I am a conservative who doesn’t yet know whether he is going to pull a lever this election. I am sure many of you are in the same boat as I. How can I vote for a candidate who supports amnesty for illegals? And please don’t try to convince me McCain doesn’t support amnesty, I pay attention. How can I trust him when he says he will secure the borders first, then deal with the illegals that are already here? Is he ready to guarantee that absolutely, under no circumstances, that he will secure our borders first, and then address those here illegally?

Alcohol is legal. That is the way it is. It is not going to change, refer to Prohibition. So let’s assume that that is ‘the bar’. Alcohol is the most potent drug that can be legally used recreationally. Nicotine, caffeine and OTC medications are below alcohol as far as potency and how physically and mentally taxing they are on an individual and society. Heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, etc. are above 'the bar'. They are too destructive to individuals and society as a whole and have no legitimate applications to justify their legalization. Some would say alcohol fits in more with the effects of the above 'the bar' drugs (effects on people and society), which may be true, but alcohol is legal.

I will hold my nose and vote for the 'lesser of two evils' (for lack of a better term) this election. I am very disappointed in the Republican leadership and have considered that the Republicans need to learn a lesson for their behavior (on illegal immigration, fighting Iraq in a politically correct manner, spending, etc.), but I will vote. I pay more attention than the average conservative voter. I am afraid that the average conservative voter is just going to stay home.

Posted at 8:51pm on Sep. 18, 2006 Islam, Religion of Peace
By Captain Toke
After 9/11, the fear of backlash against Muslims caused world leaders, church leaders from all religions and even President Bush to come out in defense of Islam. "Islam is a religion of peace", was uttered over and over.
In November of 2004, a Muslim extremist murdered Theo van Gogh, grandson of Vincent van Gogh. Theo van Gogh made a film about violence against women in Islamic societies. He also wrote columns that criticized Islamic violence. Van Gogh had received death threats for his past works, but he never took them seriously. Salmon Rushdie on the other hand, another author who criticized Islam, did take the threat seriously when Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini condemned him to death for "insulting Islam, the prophet Mohammed and the holy Koran".

By Captain Toke
First, it was hot! Ninety-five degrees! Then I had get out of the AC and walk in. I figured they would have an air conditioned shuttle from the parking lot to the door. I go through all the trouble of getting clothes on and driving to the voting place, it's the least they could do.
Then 'The Man' forced me to show him(actually it was an old lady) my voter registration card. They wouldn't let me vote by my nickname, Captain Toke, they insisted on having my "legal" name! Just another example of the man keeping me down.
At least they didn't make me show ID to prove that it was my voter card.
So finally I get in line to vote. It seems they have 'new' and 'improved' voting machines. Mmmmmmm, it makes you wonder if 'The Man' is trying to fix another election. So I wait, and wait, and wait. And wait. Twenty-five minutes! I got TV shows to watch and internet poker to play! Besides, I can see waiting twenty-five minutes for a roller coaster, a movie, maybe even a table at a The Olive Garden, but to vote?!
So I get in the machine to vote and it is all computerized! How am I supposed to vote on some newfangled, picturized typing machine? What happened to the good old 'punch-card' ballots?
Finally I get home and the guy I voted for is losing, bad. I just get home from voting and the guy already lost?!? I was disenfranchised!
I bet that little old lady (The Man) went into the back of the 'new' voting machine and changed my vote.

That is about as much debate as that subject deserves.

Posted at 8:07pm on Mar. 25, 2006 Conservatism Is Optimism
By Captain Toke
As someone who has spotted his life with bad decisions and stupid behavior, I know the temptation to blame society, the gov't and God. But then I would be a liberal.
In high school I chose the wrong crowd, which eventually cost me my place on the football and wrestling teams. I picked the wrong major in college, now I have to go back if I want to succeed in life. I chose to screw around at my easy gov't job and I lost that job (that is a story for another diary, it has to do with commenting on blogs at work) and all the benefits of being a gov't employee. When I was a young man I chose to break the law, I went to jail. I chose to engage in bad behavior, now I have to answer for that behavior to prospective employers. I drifted away from God and I lost my moral compass.
